Composting: Worm Bins for the Apartment Dweller

Did you know that almost 20% of New York City’s landfill contributions are compostable food scraps? These scraps make gorgeous fertilizer for your soil, but when tossed in the trash they contribute to the greenhouse gasses laying waste to our environment. Keep them out of landfills, save money on gardening supplies, and build healthy soils by learning how to compost at home!

Unfortunately we here in the big city can’t just “throw it over the fence” like our rural friends. We also have to grapple with smelly piles stinking up our tiny apartments, crawly intruders, and whiny neighbors. Veteran Urban Farmer Zach Pickens has solutions to all these challenges! He’ll give us the guidance and advice we need to get our simple composting system up and running. In this class, we will cover the basics of composting, discuss the best methods being used in urban areas, and talk about the tools and resources we need to make our own soil. Then he’ll show us how to build our own indoor worm composting bins and send us home with a materials list and step-by-step instructions to recreate the set-up he demonstrated!
