Free Fitness at Socrates Sculpture Park
June 14, 2014 @ 9:30 am - June 15, 2014 @ 12:00 pmFree
Queens residents hankering for outdoor exercise classes should head to Socrates Sculpture Park, where on weekends throughout the summer free yoga, Tai Chi, and kayaking and canoeing will be offered. Check the website for a full schedule. For those who are perhaps less interested in physical exertion and more inclined to private meditation, admission to the park itself always free.
Saturday and Sunday yoga classes are designed for all experience levels. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat or a towel. Kripalu Yoga is a system of Hatha Yoga that integrates body postures, breathing techniques, relaxation, and meditation. Taught by Monique Schubert and Yojaida Estrella, participants are encouraged to integrate their yoga practices with this very special waterfront environment of nature and art. Saturday morning classes are at 9:30 and 11, and Sunday classes are at 10.
Tai Chi will be led by certified instructors from the Taoist Tai Chi Society of the USA on Sunday mornings at 11. These classes offer the opportunity to learn Taoist Tai Chi, improve one’s health, relax, and exercise in an outdoor setting among changing exhibitions of contemporary sculpture.
Astoria Boaters and LIC Community Boathouse offer free kayaking and canoeing, departing from the Socrates Sculpture Park Beach at Hallets Cove (tide & weather permitting). People of all ages are welcome to participate or volunteer; no prior boating experience is required and participants may sign up on a first come, first serve basis. Minors (under 18 yrs.) must have a parent or guardian present.
Classes will be offered every Saturday and Sunday through September 28. No RSVP is required.
