Seal Spotting with NYC Parks and Rec.

January 2, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Free

Come meet your new neighbors!

Seals are back on the rise in NYC, and you’ll have the chance to spot some during a tour of Pelham Bay Park! The tour – led by NYC Parks rangers – will guide visitors through forests, marshes, and miles of shoreline, where the seals can often be found sunbathing.

Throughout the 20th century, harbor seal populations rapidly declined throughout the city, likely as a result of habitat loss and overhunting. But since the 1990s, the seals have been making a comeback; they’ve taken up residence along shores from the northern Bronx to the Verrazano. Besides being a sight to see, the seals are also an indication that NYC’s marine ecosystems are starting to recover from decades of pollution.

Don’t miss this opportunity to spot some of the city’s most amazing wildlife, and to learn from park rangers exactly what role the harbor seals play in NYC’s ecosystems.
