The Joy of the Gowanus with Julie Combal

July 30, 2016 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Free

‘The Joy of the Gowanus’ project takes it’s inspiration from Bob Ross’ PBS TV show ‘The Joy of Painting”. It aims to reinterpret the bucolic instructional landscape to reflect the natural beauty and pollution of the Gowanus canal.  Using a step-by step format, participants consider the light, water, reflections and details of nature while also representing the manmade structures and pollution that coexist in the environment.

At the end of the tutorial participants will have created their own landscape painting of the Gowanus, and have developed an artistic appreciation for the colors, structures and environment with all it’s blemishes and beauty.  As Bob Ross says “Trees cover up a multitude of sins.”

Ms. Combal is an artist and art therapist living and working in New York City.  Her work focuses on nature’s coexistence with pollution and has worked in the past with the Newtown Creek, NYC and the Atoyac River in Puebla and Oaxaca, Mexico.  She is currently an artist in residence at the Brooklyn Artist Space in Gowanus, and is excitedly exploring the Gowanus Canal and its myriad of colors and forms.
