New York-based BrightFarms, Inc., a company bringing locally grown produce to grocery retailers has recently released that it plans to build the world’s largest rooftop farm. According to a March 29th press release, BrightFarms, Inc. will build a multi-acre farm on 100,000 square feet of a warehouse rooftop in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The farm will be built in partnership with Salmar Properties LLC.

The press release states that the farm will “grow up to 1 million pounds of local produce per year…” and will “grow enough crops to meet the fresh vegetable consumption needs of up to 5,000 New Yorkers, create jobs, and prevent as much as 1.8 million gallons of storm water from going into local waterways.”

This is just one of the many projects of BrightFarms, Inc.: the company finances, develops, and manages several hydroponic greenhouses at or near supermarkets in an effort to supply produce that is better and fresher. By making food production local, it also succeeds in cutting down distance, cost and time from the supply chain.
