A new interactive map developed by Vijay Modi, professor of mechanical engineering at Columbia University, and his student Bianca Howard is able to show energy consumption in the city at the block level. The island of Manhattan is clearly the worst offender overall, but there are some surprises, such as a clear distinction between energy consumption north of central park and south of the park. Of course we’re all pretty guilty of energy overuse. As professor Modi explains in a brief interview, midtown Manhattan alone uses more energy than the entire country of Kenya.
