On a sunny Saturday afternoon, a Greenmarket is out on the Upper West Side’s Tucker Square, and the atmosphere is busy and jovial. Several vendors are set up at fold out tables under white tarp shelters. Many different foods can be found at these tables; there is rhubarb, baked goods, honey, cheese, sausage, and several varieties of apples, among many others. One vendor sells flowers. All these things are fresh and locally sourced, or are made from ingredients that were, and in most cases, they came from a nearby farm. Many vendors display the name of the farm their food is from, either on a sign or banner or printed on the front edge of the tarp shelter. While the idea of a farmer’s market in New York City may still feel new, the farms involved are part of a long tradition. The banner for one, Pinecrest Hill Orchards, reads, “200 Years of Family Farming”.

The Tucker Square Greenmarket is one of almost 70 Greenmarkets that are organized by the GrowNYC organization and show up around the city throughout the year. The GrowNYC website notes that these Greenmarkets provide “not only fresh, locally-grown food, but a gathering place where neighbors can come together, share recipes, watch a cooking demonstration, take a tour with a chef, and learn about local agriculture.”

The city’s first Greenmarket was created in 1976. Its purposes were to support local farming, and to provide New Yorkers with access to fresh, healthy local food. The network of Greenmarkets has expanded a lot since then, hence the many Greenmarkets throughout the boroughs today, and 230 family farms and fishers now contribute. These sources are all in the northeastern U.S. and most are quite close to the city, with many in the southeastern part of New York State. Some of GrowNYC’s Greenmarkets are “Youthmarkets,” which employ young people and sell to underserved communities.

Summer is a great time to get local food in the city, because in a while, all of the city’s Greenmarkets will be open. Some of the Greenmarkets will start later in June or July, some have already begun, and some come year-round. There are Greenmarkets in many neighborhoods, so most New Yorkers will have one nearby that isn’t hard to visit. This guide lists all of the Greenmarkets in the city by borough, with their locations and the times of the year, days of the week, and hours that they are open. (Dates given are for 2014). The Greenmarkets in Manhattan are listed in order going in a northeast direction along the borough’s main avenues (ex. 5th Avenue). The Greenmarkets in the other boroughs are listed in order from south to north.
