Following up on an article we published in August about the history of urban farming in NYC, here’s some more information on work being done to track the many farms sprouting up around the five boroughs.

In July 2012, Design Trust for Public Space and its partner organization Added Value published “Five Borough Farm: Seeding the Future of Urban Agriculture in New York City,” a report on the state of urban farming around New York City. Along with the printed book, a digital version of this resource was put online at http://www.fiveboroughfarm.org/. This site is a great reference point for all things policy and production when it comes to urban farming in NYC. This report and the ongoing project follows the work of urban farmers all over the five boroughs, providing pertinent information on the needs, challenges, and impacts of urban farming.

The most interesting feature of this site is the “Participate” feature which provides urban farmers and gardeners with an interactive way to broadcast their farms to the public. Also, this feature provides a data tool that can be used to process data collected from a farm or garden in order to monitor progress. This interactive interface, in the final stage of beta testing, will be available for use shortly and is worth keeping an eye out for. Whether you are an urban farmer or gardener yourself or just a city citizen with an interest in finding a local farm to visit or volunteer at, the Five Borough Farm site can connect you to all the information you need to get up, get out, and get on your way to the nearest farm.
