Over the next several months, we will undertake an exciting initiative to put budgeting decisions directly in the hands of the people those decisions will impact most – the residents of our districts. Participatory budgeting is grassroots democracy at its best.

Four City Council members, intrigued by experiments begun in Brazil to let ordinary citizens determine how government uses tax dollars, say they plan to allow their constituents to decide how $4 million is spent next year.

  1. I’d love to see this for DC’s budget, and for the Federal budget too. Imagine: public agencies justifying their funding, competing for your tax revenues. The tricky bit is that many agencies provide services that are difficult to value: environmental, police, the legislature, etc.
