The effects of Hurricane Sandy were felt all across the eastern seaboard, but nowhere more than Staten Island, where 23 died and many more were injured. Thousands of homeowners were forced to evacuate and their ability to return remains uncertain. A state of shock persists at the loss of life and the damage to whole communities. Fortunately, many have come to help and donate what they can to support those affected. If you want to join them, additional events are planned to help Staten Islanders.

Monday, 11/19, 6:30 at the Hilton Garden Inn, the annual interfaith Poor People’s Dinner will dedicate all fundraising to Hurricane Sandy relief. “We are one family. Hurricane Sandy confirmed what we already know. We celebrate the neighbor to neighbor assistance that strengthens the fabric of our community. We need Staten Island’s support to allow us to continue our work to these evacuees and all affected by the devastation of Hurricane Sandy,” says Rev. Troia, executive director of Project Hospitality, the host organization. Tickets for the event are $75 for adults, $50 for senior citizens and $35 for students. Reservations can be made by calling: 718-448-1544, Extension 163.

Saturday, 11/17, Emmy-winning comic Louis CK plays two benefit shows at the St. George Theater, ticket info here, along with information about other performances that are being donated to the island.

Another relief concert is scheduled 11/18 to support two Staten Island non-profit groups that are aiding hurricane victims: The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the William Mooney Foundation. The concert will take place from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Karl’s Clippers, 40 Bay St., in St. George. Admission is $20 at the door.
