A bold experimental project is being conceived to turn an old, abandoned trolley terminal beneath Delancey Street into the next big thing in urban design. Ever since the High Line captivated the imagination of both urban cognoscenti and laypersons alike, city planners and designers have been looking for new ways to make use of old infrastructure. The Delancey Underground project, colloquially known as the “lowline” attempts to do just that by using state of the art technology and bold design to create an exemplar of public green space. If the project comes to fruition and proves to be sustainable, it could radically redefine our very notions of the word “park” and how we think of open space.
