SUMMARY:Composting: Worm Bins for the Apartment Dweller
DESCRIPTION:Image:  www.howstuffworks.com \nDid you know that almost 20% of New York City’s landfill contributions are compostable food scraps? These scraps make gorgeous fertilizer for your soil\, but when tossed in the trash they contribute to the greenhouse gasses laying waste to our environment. Keep them out of landfills\, save money on gardening supplies\, and build healthy soils by learning how to compost at home! \nUnfortunately we here in the big city can’t just “throw it over the fence” like our rural friends. We also have to grapple with smelly piles stinking up our tiny apartments\, crawly intruders\, and whiny neighbors. Veteran Urban Farmer Zach Pickens has solutions to all these challenges! He’ll give us the guidance and advice we need to get our simple composting system up and running. In this class\, we will cover the basics of composting\, discuss the best methods being used in urban areas\, and talk about the tools and resources we need to make our own soil. Then he’ll show us how to build our own indoor worm composting bins and send us home with a materials list and step-by-step instructions to recreate the set-up he demonstrated! \nBuy tickets here.

SUMMARY:Meet no Impact Man
DESCRIPTION:Image:  www.noimpactman.typepad.com/blog/ \nWe all know about accelerating climate change\, the melting Antarctic and other dire global news. As though that is not enough\, some environmentalists say we are screwed–it’s game over. Is that true? What are we supposed to do with that kind of information? Should we have hope? Should we be in despair? \nWhat\, in fact\, should we do? Colin Beavan\, aka No Impact Man\, talks about embracing uncertainty and mystery–what some people call Sacred Agnosticism–to help us find our own personal paths to helping ourselves and others. \nFacilitated by Advanced Certified Jivamukti Teachers Tamar Samir & Ximena Savitch.  All No Impact Week events are free. You can join any of the events\, but we highly recommend you join the whole week\, and especially the GIVE BACK DAY on Thursday\, July 24\, 10am-2pm. We are joining with the Human Impacts Institute to plant native species in East River Park in Williamsburg. \nNO IMPACT NIGHTLY MEETINGS AT THE JIVAMUKTEA CAFÉ: July 20-July 25 \nSUNDAY\, July 20\, 5-6:30pm: Intro meeting\nMONDAY\, July 21\, 5-6:30pm: Consumption focus meting\nTUESDAY\, July 22\, 5-6:30pm: Trash focus meeting\nWEDNESDAY\, July 23\, 5-6:30pm: Local Food focus meeting. It is about a vision for a better life – for people”\n— Colin Beavan\, No Impact Man \n
