SUMMARY:Startup Weekend New York City: Social Impact Edition
DESCRIPTION:Image: www.up.co \nEver wondered what it takes to be an entrepreneur?\nThe professional and personal challenges\, the high and lows\, the failures and the success? \nStartup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs\, with events in over 100 countries and 600 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil\, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas\, form teams\, and start companies. \nAll Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation\, coding\, designing\, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback. \nWhether entrepreneurs found companies\, find a co-founder\, meet someone new\, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5\, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. If you want to put yourself in the shoes of an entrepreneur\, register now for the best weekend of your life! \n

SUMMARY:Obscura Society NyC: The Insalubrious Valley
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Mitch Waxman \nSet to the dramatic backdrop of the insalubrious valley of Newtown Creek\, historian Mitch Waxman will be sharing fascinating tales of the early chemical industry\, “Dead Animal and Night Soil Wharfs”\, colonial era heretics\, witches and the coming of the railroad. \nWe’ll be following the currently undefended border of Brooklyn and Queens as we make our way through the actual site of the Industrial Revolution\, visiting two movable bridges\, a forgotten tributary of the larger waterway and the still standing remains of an early 19th century highway along with a little known colonial pathway. Our grand tour will be ending at the famed Clinton Diner in Maspeth where scenes from Martin Scorcese’s “Goodfellas” were shot. Lunch at the former Clinton Diner\, now called Goodfellas Diner\, will be included in the tour. \nDETAILS: \nMeet up will be at the corner of Grand Street and Morgan Avenue in Brooklyn. The L train stops nearby at Bushwick Avenue and Grand Street; the Q54 and Q59 bus lines have nearby stopping points as well.\nBe prepared for rough terrain and possible heavy truck traffic. Dress and pack appropriately for hiking and the weather. Closed-toe shoes are highly recommended. Bathroom opportunities will be found only at the beginning of the walk.\nTicket price includes lunch at the former Clinton Diner.\nQuestions? Contact megan@atlasobscura.com
