DESCRIPTION:Pho­to­graph by Miska Draskoczy.\n \nA new photography exhibit called “Gowanus Wild” is on display from October 10-November 16\, 2014 at the Ground Floor Gallery in Brooklyn. \nIn the words of artist Miska Draskoczy\,  \n\nSilence. A lack of humans. Light on textured abstraction. Chaotic forms unfolding all around you\, creating a hypnosis of spirit that just might convince you there is a Creator after all. These are the qualities I think of when experiencing ‘wilderness’. And yet the same tingle runs down my spine while wandering the industrial streets of Gowanus\, Brooklyn\, at night. \nI aim to turn concepts of nature photography on their head by finding the beautiful in what most consider to be a man-made environmental catastrophe. The Gowanus Canal is one of the most polluted waterways in the country and the neighborhood has seen continuous industrial use since the 19th century. My vision is to capture a marriage of opposites; the organic in the industrial\, green within blacks and grays\, stillness and peace in urban chaos. \nAs our urban communities grapple with how to connect with the primeval in a world that offers sterile potted plants as an outlet to nature\, I see Gowanus Wild as an urban hiking manual\, a continuation of generations of landscape photography\, updated for our technological age. SUMMARY:Bk Ecology Bike Tour
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: NYC DOT\nBk Ecology Bike Tour\nSaturday November 15 at 11am\nEast New York\nLearn about Brooklyn’s environmental challenges and successes on NYC H20’s leisurely and informative bike ride along Jamaica Bay. \nClimate change\, rising sea levels and intense storms like Hurricane Sandy have persuaded city planners of the value of marshland in storm water management.  A century ago the neighborhoods Sandy flooded were wetlands. \nAll 14 of NYC’s sewage plants are built in this vulnerable floodplain along the water’s edge. Their effluent flows into our bay’s and rivers\, so maintaining high quality treatment is vital to protect beach goers as well as wildlife. \nGovernment agencies like DEP and the Army Core of Engineers have partnered with local NGO’s like Jamaica Bay Eco Watchers and NRDC to design a plan to restore Jamaica Bay’s ecosystem. Initiatives include restoring wetlands\, mitigating combined sewer overflows (CSO) with green and grey infrastructure and upgrading sewage plants. \n\n\nOn this ride we will;\n–   Bike along the Jamaica Bay greenway\, visit restored\nwetlands and demonstrate how the multifaceted Jamaica\nBay Watershed Protection Plan is being put into action\n–   Visit a sewage plant and a storm water retention facility\nlearning about CSO’s and the ad hoc way in which the\nsewage system initially developed as well as the\nenvironmental and urban planning history of this area\n–   Explore one of NYC’s ‘Forever Wild’ areas\n–   See lesser known neighborhoods of Brooklyn\, including\nSpring Creek\, Bergen  Basin\, Sheepshead Bay\, Brighton\nBeach and Coney Island\, all fronting Jamaica Bay\n\n\nThe tour will be led by Bk ecology enthusiasts Adam Schwartz and Matt Malina.\n  \nWe will ride from the 26th Ward sewage plant to Coney Island along the Jamaica Bay bike path a distance of 13 miles. We will finish at the Stillwell Ave F Train station. \nThe pace will be 10 mph. We ride together for safety.
