Across the country\, tens of thousands of people will show our power by hitting the streets\, holding community forums\, and educating voters about the issues – all to ensure that elected and private sector leaders make action on climate a priority. \nFrom Seattle to Miami – and everywhere in-between – activists and non-activists alike will come together to demonstrate to the world that on this day\, and every day\, climate matters. Like the National Day of Action in 2015\, September 8th is about more than just numbers; it’s about telling the story of climate\, jobs\, and justice; it’s about showing that to change everything\, it takes everyone – including you; and it’s about committing to make climate action a part of the national dialogue in November\, in the months that follow\, and well into 2019 and 2020.

DESCRIPTION:Whale Bay\, Antarctica No. 4\, 84×144\, 2016 (reproduction)\nZaria Forman\nWindow installation (galleries closed\, installation viewable from the street) \nDecember 20\, 2017 – January 15\, 2018 \n88 Cores \nPeggy Weil\nJanuary 19\, 2018 – February 11\, 2018 \nIn Human Time\, the first exhibition of the Climate Museum\, explores intersections of polar ice\, humanity\, and time through video and photography installations by artists Zaria Forman and Peggy Weil. It also includes a timeline with artifacts relating the physical history of the Arctic to its significant influence on both culture and science. \nEvery week\, climate news confirms that the poles of the Earth which seem implacably vast and frozen\, unchangeable and forbidding are in fact\, far from invulnerable. Polar ice is disappearing on a scale our minds cannot comprehend. Indeed\, it is one the clearest and strongest demonstrable summaries of the massive changes caused by human action.   In Human Time asks how this contradiction between invulnerability and fragility reflect on us. If on the one hand\, our capacity for awe\, creativity\, curiosity\, knowledge and understanding\, communication and common action offers optimism for our surviving the climate crisis\, our capacity for heedless destruction does not. Our agency—in decision and action—is caught in the tension of our conflicting capacities. \nMeaningful shared action demands a stronger awareness of time\, of its continuum and urgency\, in ways that are often less comfortable or natural to hold. Both Weil and Forman raise these issues at planetary scale: Weil traces planetary temperatures preserved in cores of ancient ice while Forman foregrounds the enduring beauty of landscapes undergoing relentless change. James Baldwin said of the struggle for racial equality and our common humanity that “[t]here is never a time in the future in which we will work out our salvation. The challenge is in the moment; the time is always now.” Human beings will be living with climate change past the foreseeable horizon. DESCRIPTION:Writers and artists in the United States are looking for relevant creative responses to meet the new challenges in the fight for social justice and equal rights in America in 2017. \nIn her exhibition Piazza Universale / Social Stages\, currently on view through July 30th\, artist Marinella Senatore presents works that are “stages for” and “stages of” a collective social becoming\, and offers tools for individual growth and collective empowerment. \nFor Out Loud in Public\, three Queens-based writers—Jared Harél\, Meera Nair\, and KC Trommer—build on Senatore’s example\, presenting words that respond to the artist’s work\, and inviting the audience to help create a collaborative poem to reflect on and resist the challenges presented by our current political moment. \nJared Harél was awarded the 2015 Stanley Kunitz Memorial Prize from American Poetry Review as well as the 2017 William Matthews Poetry Prize from Asheville Poetry Review. His poems have appeared or are forthcoming in such journals as Tin House\, The Threepenny Review\, The Southern Review\, Massachusetts Review\, EPOCH and Ecotone. His narrative long-poem\, “The Body Double\,” was published by Brooklyn Arts Press in 2012. Harél teaches writing at Nassau Community College\, plays drums\, and lives in Queens with his wife and two kids. \nMeera Nair is an author of Video (Pantheon\, 2002) and two children’s books published in India. Video won the Sixth Annual Asian-American Literary Award\, was a Washington Post Best Book of the Year\, and was shortlisted for the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Prize. Her writing has appeared in Guernica\, Threepenny Review\, Calyx\, New York Times\, the Guardian\, the Washington Post\, NPR’s Selected Shortsand Cura among others\, and in the anthologies\, Charlie Chan is Dead-2\, Money Changes Everything\, Delhi Noir\, Upside Down and is forthcoming in Self-Defined. She has won residency fellowships from the MacDowell Colony\, and writing fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts\, The New York Times\, and the Queens Council for the Arts. She was the Writer-in-Residence at Fordham University from 2011-2014\, and currently teaches writing at NYU and Brooklyn College\, and as a community activist\, to new immigrants in Queens. She is a co-founder of the reading series\, Queens Writers Resist. She lives in Jackson Heights\, Queens. \nKC Trommer is the author of the chapbook The Hasp Tongue (dancing girl press\, 2014). A graduate of the MFA program at The University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, KC has been the recipient of an Academy of American Poets Prize. Her poem “Fear Not\, Mary” won the 2015 Fugue Poetry Prize and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. In 2017\, the Grammy Award-winning composer Herschel Garfein created the song cycle Three Rides for soprano\, cello\, and piano from her work. The first of the songs\, “The Cyclone\,” had its world premiere in New York as a part of the 2017 Five Boroughs Music Festival’s Five Borough Song Book\, Volume II. Her recent work has been included in the anthologies Resist Much\, Obey Little(Spuyten Duyvil\, 2017) and the forthcoming Who Will Speak for America?: Envisioning a New National Community After Trump (Temple University Press).

SUMMARY:A Tool for Justice: Fútbol as a Social Arena
DESCRIPTION:The role of sports as a social tool is marked by the ways in which athletes challenge the structure of the game through their own representation within and beyond the field. This conversation\, focusing on fútbol\, aims to expand upon how the game is a critical and aesthetic tool that links indigenous heritage with current social issues. Moderated by Marcela Guerrero\, Assistant Curator at The Whitney Museum of American Art\, and referencing the work of Betty Bastidas\, director of Dreamtown and Ronny Quevedo’s exhibition no hay medio tiempo / there is no halftime\, the panel investigates a cultural tradition inherited from the past that cuts across several temporalities in the Americas as well as diverse local histories\, which in Ecuador includes its African diaspora and immigration to new territories. \nFollowing the panel Betty Bastida’s film Dreamtown will be screened as part of Passport Thursdays: International Dance\, Music\, and Film Series. \nModerator: Marcela Guerrero\nPanelists: Betty Bastidas and Ronny Quevedo \nBetty Bastidas is an award-winning filmmaker\, photographer and media educator based in Brooklyn\, NY. Originally from Ecuador\, came to the US at the age of nine. She uses filmmaking and photography as social tools to celebrate the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Most recently\, she completed her first international soccer feature\, Dreamtown\, following the precarious dream of a young Afro-Ecuadorian soccer player\, Anibal Chala\, as he strives to make it to the professional leagues\, and over the span of six years sees his dreams become reality. Other credits include a commissioned short film for ITVS Latino Graduates called Can’t Hold Me Back\, following Fernando\, a Latino youth from Detroit as he becomes the first in his family to earn a high school diploma. This story aired on PBS Independent Lens in 2013 and was selected to be part of the PBS Online Film Festival. She is the co-founder of a multicultural production company called Maracuya Productions focusing on stories of injustice and inspiration for underrepresented communities in the US and abroad. Her work has garnered numerous awards\, including 2013 and 2008 NALAC Fund for the Arts\, NALIP/HBO Film Grant\, Post-production grant from the CNCINE Ecuador\, New York Women in Film & Television In-kind grant\, NYFA Photography Fellowship\, and Brooklyn Council of the Arts Community Grant. She is a graduate of the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and is based in Brooklyn\, NY. \nMarcela Guerrero is Assistant Curator at The Whitney Museum of American Art. From 2014 to 2017 she worked as Curatorial Fellow at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles where she had a hand in curating—with Cecilia Fajardo-Hill and Andrea Giunta—the upcoming Hammer exhibition Radical Women: Latin American Art\, 1960–1985\, for the Getty Foundation’s initiative Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA. Prior to her tenure at the Hammer\, she worked in the Latin American and Latino art department at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, where she served as research coordinator for the International Center for the Arts of the Americas. She has also written for a variety of arts publications\, such as ArtNexus\, Caribbean Intransit: The Arts Journal\, and Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts. Guerrero holds a PhD in art history from the University of Wisconsin\, Madison. \nRonny Quevedo is a recipient of the 2016 Queens Museum/Jerome Foundation Fellowship for Emerging Artists. He was recently awarded a 2017 A Blade of Grass Fellowship for Socially Engaged Art and a Socrates Sculpture Park Emerging Artist Fellowship. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at The Drawing Center; The Bronx Museum of the Arts; Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston; and Emerson Gallery (Germany)\, amongst others. Residencies include Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Workspace Program\, Kala Art Institute\, the Core Program at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, Project Row Houses\, Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture\, and Lower East Side Printshop. Quevedo received his MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2013 and BFA from The Cooper Union in 2003.

The festival is organized in partnership with three major New York City cultural institutions: New York Live Arts\, The 8th Floor\, and the Queens Museum. \nThe festival is an extension of What Will Be Different: Conversations on a Changing America\, a traveling discussion series that explores how diverse issues and communities are affected by an era of sweeping political change. \n \nShahana Hanif is a Brooklyn-born Bangladeshi performance artist\, storyteller\, disability justice activist\, and community organizer rooted in immigrant rights and representation\, affordable housing\, and language access. She spearheaded CAAAV: Organizing Asian Communities’ public housing organizing program\, through which she builds the grassroots community power of low-income\, immigrant Bangladeshi\, Korean\, and Chinese tenants. A founding member of the Muslim Writers Collective NYC\, Shahana has also developed a widely used Bangla social justice language bank resource guide. \nAn accomplished filmmaker\, Paola Mendoza focuses much of her work around “marginalized stories\,” including those of immigrants\, women\, and children. After the presidential election\, she learned that her friend Carmen Perez was helping plan a massive march in Washington\, D.C. for the day after the inauguration. Mendoza called Perez and expressed her enthusiasm. “I’ll do whatever you need me to do\,” she said. Mendoza then became the Artistic Director for what became one of the largest demonstrations in U.S. history. She marched for her son Mateo Ali\, “so he knows never to sit back in silence when injustice happens.” \nComposer/pianist Samora Pinderhughes is known for big multidisciplinary projects and his use of music to examine sociopolitical issues. He has performed in Carnegie Hall\, MoMA\, The White House and elsewhere\, and toured abroad with Branford Marsalis and others. Her documentary Resilience\, about her garment worker mother fighting sweatshop conditions\, screened at national and international film festivals. SUMMARY:Civic Art Lab | Community Resilience: Build-A-Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This interactive workshop will educate participants in the fundamentals of resilient empowerment\, and have them apply these principles to the conception of their own public design workshops. Operation Resilient Living & Innovation (ORLI+) will present attendees with a suite of community engagement strategies\, designed to maximize collaboration with underserved populations and leverage local assets to grow a resilient society. To maximize the impact of this event\, real-world scenarios will be incorporated\, with the goal of presenting actionable outcomes for local at-risk communities. ORLI+ will conduct the following activities during the workshop: (1) ice-breaker to illustrate deficiencies of standard community design workshops\, (2) presentation of model community workshop objectives and strategies\, (3) presentation of case-study workshop scenarios by local/regional community leaders\, (4) break-out case study analysis and workshop design by participants\, and (5) presentation and discussion of proposed methodologies. \nThis existing workshop model promotes the expansion of a typical conference program\, drawing connections between local communities and professionals\, and visiting experts. ORLI+ believes this enhanced and focused interaction can serve as a model for increasing the impact of architects and designers in their local communities (and vice-versa)\, leveraging the conference platform towards actionable\, resilient community engagement and development. \nCivic Art Lab 2017 is the third iteration of the project\, designed as a pop-up gallery and workshop space in the East Village at Avenue C & 7th Street. The lab will be hosted in partnership with Marc Norov and the Creations Gallery\, a mixed-use community pop-up space\, adjacent to a community-based bike repair shop. Our programming will continue to be low cost for full registrants and free for individual registrants. These workshops\, talks\, and exhibitions are designed by volunteer artists\, designers\, and teachers who lead investigations into diverse themes such as: creative re-use; urban agriculture; sustainable architecture; health & well-being\, and environmental justice\, to name a few. SUMMARY:Civic Art Lab | Community Mapping
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is hosted by designer and educator Andrew DeRosa (Queens College). Participants will work together mapping basic personal behaviors and interactions that occur at different times and places in the city. You will be led through a step-by-step process of gathering and visualizing data. Using basic materials\, the workshop will culminate in the collaborative creation of a large map that will visualize the diverse lives of participants and give insights into our behaviors together as New Yorkers. \nCivic Art Lab 2017 is the third iteration of the project\, designed as a pop-up gallery and workshop space in the East Village at Avenue C & 7th Street. The lab will be hosted in partnership with Marc Norov and the Creations Gallery\, a mixed-use community pop-up space\, adjacent to a community-based bike repair shop. Our programming will continue to be low cost for full registrants and free for individual registrants. These workshops\, talks\, and exhibitions are designed by volunteer artists\, designers\, and teachers who lead investigations into diverse themes such as: creative re-use; urban agriculture; sustainable architecture; health & well-being\, and environmental justice\, to name a few.

SUMMARY:Temple of Manufacturing
DESCRIPTION:Temple of Manufacturing presents COMPANY’s long-term project: SECRETS. Traveling to remote sites around the world to learn crafting processes unique to particular industries and places\, the duo (comprised of Aamu Song and Johan Olin) has collaborated over the last decade with a variety of communities to rethink the very processes and knowledge embedded in these places. Applying this knowledge to new and unexpected designs\, COMPANY’s work creates an intersection between the mastery of traditional technique and the invention of a new\, poetic\, and personal material and object-specific vocabulary.\n \nFor the installation at Storefront\, COMPANY presents its own Temple of Manufacturing\, an installa­tion that reflects the feeling of sacredness that the duo encountered while visiting spaces of pro­duction all over the world. Raw materials\, drawings\, objects\, designs\, and process documents are presented alongside a series of frescoes painted in situ that narrate some of the journeys\, topics\, and works that structure their research.\n \nTemple of Manufacturing presents objects conceived and produced as composite figures from COMPANY’s own design methods and their trips to Japan\, Russia\, Finland\, Estonia\, and the Amish communities of Pennsylvania. Part an artist’s travel log\, part a sanctuary for the maker’s masters\, and somewhere between an archive\, an exhibition\, and a store (the ultimate temple of contempo­rary capitalism) the installation reflects upon “the aura of the work of art” (in this case\, the design object)\, and the hidden processes of design research as related to manual versus mechanized pro­duction.\n \n“Designed by COMPANY\,” “Made by COMPANY\,” “Manufactured by COMPANY\,” “Made with COMPANY\,” and “Product of COMPANY\,” the objects presented in this exhibition are built with love and shared with everyone\, maintaining the playfulness that the Eames brought to the world of making\, with an eye toward the ethics of production and global design culture.\n \nThis is available every day until August 7.

DESCRIPTION:projects at 31 unique sites across Lower Manhattan and Governors Island. The Festival also offers opportunities for audiences to interact with artists\, socialize and experience multiple facets of artists’ work and the creative process. This year’s River To River Festival is dedicated to Trisha Brown and David Rockefeller. \nRiver To River is a platform for diverse voices and untold stories. The Festival explores Lower Manhattan and nearby Governors Island with forward-thinking\, boundary-blurring artists across all disciplines to reveal both new and existing—but often overshadowed—contemporary narratives about the waterfront\, the built environment and the past\, present and future of our neighborhood. LMCC and the Festival are identifying and illuminating local\, pressing artistic and social issues in the global context of New York City. With the Festival\, we carry on an ever-important legacy of artists making work in and for the public sphere\, particularly in Lower Manhattan\, and we are committed to continuing to offer this free programming to all audiences! \nThe Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s wide-flung free celebration has many exciting offerings in 2017. SUMMARY:iLANDing: Researching Urban Ecologies with Movement Based Scores
DESCRIPTION:iLAND (Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Art\, Nature\, Dance) invites participants for an outdoor workshop for the creation of movement-based scores designed to explore local urban ecologies. \nParticipants will have an opportunity to dance\, draw\, and map based on their observations of the creatures inhabiting Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Some of the activities will draw from research on the behavior of white-footed mice as well as the history of the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs. \niLANDing is a practice developed over the past 15 years of iLAB residencies hosted by iLAND. The workshops will be accompanied by the newly released publication A Field Guide to iLANDing: Scores for Researching Urban Ecologies\, which compiles 77 scores sourced from 14 years of iLAND’s interdisciplinary collaborations.
