SUMMARY:Earth Day Clean Energy Vehicle Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Earth day marks the anniversary which is informally recognized as the birth of the modern-day environmental movement. According to earthday.org\, the inception of the event in 1970 “capitalized on the emerging consciousness\, channeling the energy of the anti-war protest movement and putting environmental concerns front and center.” \nIn the past Empire Clean Cities has partnered with numerous organizations to  spend the day spreading awareness for our planet all over NYC and the lower Hudson Valley region. This year for Earth Day we are presenting a showcase of electric vehicles\, hybrid electric vehicles\, and other alternative fuel technologies to the public to spread the word about these  environmentally friendly vehicles that run on clean energy. Come visit MetroTech Commons in front of NYU Poly to see and experience the latest technologies. \nNo ticket required for entry\, but please do RSVP here. \nPhoto credit: Global Clean Vehicle

SUMMARY:Structures of Coastal Resilience: Designing for Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:The devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 has highlighted the vulnerability of urban coastal areas to the effects of catastrophic storms and climate change. Coastal communities must adapt planning strategies to mitigate the risk posed by these natural hazards. \nStructures of Coastal Resilience (SCR) matches the latest science with urban and landscape design to propose actionable solutions for buffering against storms. SCR is a Rockefeller Foundation-supported project dedicated to studying and proposing resilient designs for urban coastal environments in the North Atlantic region. SCR brings together a distinguished group of engineers\, scientists\, architects\, landscape architects\, and scholars to generate in-depth and informed proposals for four sites on the North Atlantic: Narragansett Bay RI\, Jamaica Bay NY\, Atlantic City NJ\, and Norfolk VA. These areas feature ongoing projects by the US Army Corps of Engineers\, demonstrate socioeconomic vulnerability\, and are highly prone to flooding. \nAt the Center for Architecture\, we will be displaying the research and design proposals relating to Jamaica Bay\, NY and Atlantic City\, NJ. \nThe four universities involved in this collaboration are Princeton University School of Architecture\, Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment\, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering\, Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs; Harvard University Graduate School of Design; City College Spitzer School of Architecture; and University of Pennsylvania School of Design. \nProject Director: Guy Nordenson \nProject Managers: Julia Chapman\, Enrique Ramirez\, Elizabeth Hodges \nClimate and Storm Science Research Team: Ning Lin\, Christopher Little\, Talea Mayo\, Michael Oppenheimer\, James Smith \nFlood Risk Mapping Team: Michael Tantala\, Tess McNamara \nUniversity of Pennsylvania School of Design: Anuradha Mathur\, Dilip da Cunha\, Caitlin Squier-Roper\, Jamee Kominsky\, Graham Laird Prentice\, Matthew J. SUMMARY:Climate Countdown - Film Screening & Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Our window to engage the public in shaping global climate change policy is closing. In December of this year global leaders will gather in Paris for COP21 to decide what our future is going to look like – but most citizens don’t even know this is happening. We must bridge the gap between the “policy makers” and the public. \nClimate Countdown is a media project that equips its viewer with the knowledge\, vocabulary\, and tools to have a voice in building political will to avoid a global climate crisis. This web-series makes the acronym-laden process of climate change negotiations digestible and shareable. By mapping out climate solutions\, each episode cultivates awareness\, encourages hope\, and empowers the audience to act. \nJoin us for the first screening event of the Climate Countdown webseries at Columbia University. The event will showcase episodes from the series\, as well as two seperate expert panel discussions on the webseries and climate media at large.
