SUMMARY:Structures of Coastal Resilience: Designing for Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:The devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 has highlighted the vulnerability of urban coastal areas to the effects of catastrophic storms and climate change. Coastal communities must adapt planning strategies to mitigate the risk posed by these natural hazards. \nStructures of Coastal Resilience (SCR) matches the latest science with urban and landscape design to propose actionable solutions for buffering against storms. SCR is a Rockefeller Foundation-supported project dedicated to studying and proposing resilient designs for urban coastal environments in the North Atlantic region. SCR brings together a distinguished group of engineers\, scientists\, architects\, landscape architects\, and scholars to generate in-depth and informed proposals for four sites on the North Atlantic: Narragansett Bay RI\, Jamaica Bay NY\, Atlantic City NJ\, and Norfolk VA. DESCRIPTION:The Northeastern U.S. hosts a rich diversity of native plants\, many of which play essential roles for humans and the environment. Alarmingly\, a number of these species are seeing a precipitous decline. Many natives are imperiled as a result (New York State considers one-quarter of its native plant species to be of conservation concern). DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Red Vines\, Miska Draskoczy\nGowanus Wild by Miska Draskoczy\nThis exhibition aims to turn concepts of nature photography on their head by finding the beautiful in what most consider a man-made environmental catastrophe.\nFrom the artist: \nMy vision for Gowanus Wild is to illustrate a personal exploration of nature and wilderness in the paradoxical setting of a contaminated industrial environment. As the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn has been declared a federal Superfund cleanup site and seen over 150 years of continuous industrial use\, one of my aims with the series is to show just how tenacious nature can be in the face of such grave environmental destruction. Set entirely at night when the area empties of people and activity\, the mood is one of stillness\, reflection\, and discovery. \nI’ve lived on the border of Gowanus and Park Slope since 2008\, and walking home through the deserted streets\, I was always struck by how odd and atmospheric the place felt. At first I photographed the area because it inspired interesting images. Later I started to ask myself more consciously what it was that drew me to it. While an indictment of man’s abuse of the environment is perhaps inevitable\, my goal is to not just celebrate nature’s resilience but to also show how it is paralleled by the human ability to seek and find the balm of nature in the most unlikely of places. I believe wilderness and adventure are natural longings and that satisfying these urges is perhaps less about far flung travel and more about altering our perception and awakening to our Newsurroundings\, however ugly or distraught they may be. \n\nGowanus Wild is coming to the Brooklyn Public Library for the summer from June 11th to September 25th: \nJoin for the opening reception on Thursday June 11th\, 6pm-8pm in the Ingersoll Young Adult Reading Room\, 1st floor\, Central Library in Grand Army Plaza. \nSeveral other shows are also opening at the library including artists Stephen Mallon\, Leah Oates and Leonard Ursachi\, and a show on fairy tales curated by Donna Miskend. Go Green offers Greencycle Swap to recycle and reuse clothing\, shoes\, books\, toys and more. The event hosts a green school contest\, wellness with yoga\, zumba and other classes\, vendors with enviro-friendly merchandise\, and live music and dance performances. \nEach year\, Go Green! DESCRIPTION:photo: Jennifer Marvillas\, “71 Square Miles\,” 2012-ongoing \nA prime impetus for visual artists has been to better understand and interpret the world around them.  In contemporary practice\, artists observe\, collect\, explore\, interact\, depict\, and diagram. Cartographers follow similar impulses in seeking to give visual form to geography and to physical space. Mapping Brooklyn juxtaposes the work of contemporary artists working with historic maps\, with examples of maps themselves\, suggesting the myriad ways that maps can represent\, on the one hand\, such practical matters as way finding\, property ownership\, population shifts\, and war strategy\, and on other\, the terrain of the metaphorical\, psychological\, and personal. In the galleries at both venues\, historic maps and contemporary works will be in dialogue\, suggesting common themes—the desire to explore\, chart\, and analyze territory—and highlight the innovative ways that contemporary artists use mapping\, cartography\, and exploration\, to reveal data\, ideas\, and emotions. \nA key element of Mapping Brooklyn is its local focus. Brooklyn is not only an international center of the contemporary art world\, but also the most populous of New York’s boroughs\, with over 2.5 million residents.   It is a place of astounding diversity—few Brooklynites can claim familiarity with all of its neighborhoods and diverse cultures. It is also a place of change—neighborhoods and demographics are in constant flux\, as are the built environment and use of land. With this exhibition\, we aim to introduce visitors to the remarkable range of historic maps that have sought to study and document facets of the borough to contemporary art works that reveal mapping as a powerful means of representation. \nExhibit runs from February 26\, 2015 to May 3\, 2015. \nRegular Museum Hours\nWednesday-Sunday\, 12-5pm \nClosed Mondays and Tuesdays \nAdmission is suggested donation.

This exciting series of crowd-sourced programs gives “commuters who happen to be artists and artists who happen to be commuters” (New York Times) the opportunity to perform and present their creative work inside the museum’s decommissioned subway station home. PLATFORM is an evening for all those inspired by the engineering\, intricate choreography\, and impromptu interactions of the daily commute. Have an idea? The Transit Museum gives you a platform. The event will include live performances\, human bingo\, walking men\, interactive animation\, and unlikely friendships – all set against the backdrop of our 1936 decommissioned IND subway station.
