SUMMARY:Ben's Secret\, Spicy\, Salsa Workshop!
DESCRIPTION:You knew he made hot sauce but did you know he was a master of salsa? Until now he’s kept his salsa skills a secret\, only gracing the lucky few with some of the best batches of salsa Brooklyn has ever seen. Ben Flanner\, president of Brooklyn Grange\, knows a thing or two about heat and he’s ready to share his salsa with you! \nIn this two-hour\, hands-on workshop we’ll start with a quick harvest of tomatoes and peppers and a few other ingredients from our rooftop farm and then move into production mode. You’ll learn what goes into each batch\, how to determine heat levels\, and how to make a salsa that will leave your chip bowl empty before you know it (it’s a good problem to have\, we promise)!  We’ll also talk about the differences between green and red sauces\, fresh and cooked salsas\, how to consider the flavor profiles of your ingredients when putting together your sauce and where to source the best tortilla chips in NYC.

SUMMARY:Beekeeping 101: Honey Extraction
DESCRIPTION:Harvest\, filter\, jar\, and taste the freshest honey in NYC! \nSo\, you’ve spent the summer learning all about bees now it’s time to reap the sweet rewards of your efforts! For the third installment of our summer beekeeping series you’re in for a treat\, It’s time for honey harvest!   \nThere’s no classroom component to this hands-on course.  Instead\, we’ll head right on up to the rooftop apiary\, where participants will first learn how to differentiate between unripe nectar and honey that is ready to harvest.  Once we’ve determined that the bees have finished their work and the honey has thickened to a stable viscosity\, beekeeper Carin Zinter will show us how to remove the bees from the honey manually. \nFrom there\, we’ll move into the extraction room where participants will uncap frames of honey for extraction; extract honey with a centrifugal honey extractor; filter and jar the honey\, and take part in a honey tasting.  You’ll never take a teaspoon of honey for granted again.

SUMMARY:Compost Dinner
DESCRIPTION:As people who spend our days farming\, we strive to see as little food waste as possible. Simply stated\, wasted food is wasted energy. So we look for ways we can cut down\, we turn bruised peppers into hot sauce and split tomatoes into sauce. After our big butcher paper dinners\, crab and crawfish bodies are added to our compost. As the shells break down\, the calcium and other nutrients help enrich the soil. But what about the crops that we simply don’t have a market for? The edible weeds and seeds that are found in abundance on our farm but at the end of the day are not harvested because we don’t have a buyer. As farmers\, we are just one part of the equation. We need creative chefs who are looking to solve the same problems we are and are considering the full picture. \nIn steps chef Winston Chiu of BonBite. When he came to us with the idea of a compost dinner\, where the whole focus is to create a whole meal from crops that would otherwise be considered waste\, we were more than intrigued. We were excited. The chef will be working with our farmers over the next several months to glean from the edges of the fields\, gathering all the ingredients he needs to make a bountiful meal. \nIt’s a farm dinner of epic proportions and you are invited to the feast! \nEntrees will be served family style. Menu and more details coming soon!

SUMMARY:Day of Planting and "Bronx Music Garden"
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION\n\n\n\n11:00 am to 2:00 pm – Kick Off Event and Tree Planting (Fruit Tree Planting Foundation\, DeWitt Clinton High School Sustainability\, vitafusionTM\, actress Jennie Garth)\n2:00 pm to 3:00 pm – Tree Care Workshop (Fruit Tree Planting Foundation and NYC Compost Project)\n3:00 pm to 4:00 pm – Meeting with Principal Pierre Orbe (Community and Project Partners)\n3:00 pm to 7:00 pm – Bronx Music Garden with DJ Omar Morsy and guest performers as well as ongoing Sustainability\, Art and Garden Projects – lots to get involved with!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails\nThere’s a full day happening at the new community garden at DeWitt Clinton High School on June 6. The makers of vitafusionTM\, the #1 adult gummy vitamin brand\, has joined forces with the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation (FTPF) to officially launch the “Fruit Tree Project” at our school and have donated to us 35 fruit trees to start an orchard! We are inviting you to lend a hand\, dig\, move compost\, learn how to plant and take care of trees and support our efforts to further transform our environment and feeds our community healthy fresh food. \nWe will gather at 11:00 am with actress Jennie Garth to kick off the day and will get to learn more about this project as well as The Baldwin Learning Center and Trail Project\, a reimagination of urban public space on the DeWitt Clinton High School campus and the surrounding neighborhood of Norwood in the North Bronx. Tree Care Workshop by Fruit Tree Planting Foundation and NYC Compost Project will follow planting event. \nDJ Omar Morsy combines his love for gardening and music for this first ever Bronx Music Garden event. With our majestic new community garden as a backdrop\, the rhythms will pulse our Bronx students and neighbors as we plant\, play and groove to DJ sets with an earth beat in mind and live performances by Never Yet Contested and Ane. If you’ve been lucky enough to attend any number of our events over the last few years you will have already delighted in the delicious garden to table offerings of Executive Chef Noah Sheetz. With as many sustainability students as we can muster\, we’ll show you what we do: gardening\, community art making\, sustainability exhibits\, games and prizes. A unique and groundbreaking event with fun for all ages! \nThe Baldwin Learning Center and Trail Project is centered on the Dewitt Clinton High School campus and the surrounding neighborhood of Norwood in the North Bronx. This neighborhood has one of the highest percentages of green space to population in New York City\, but this wealth of public space remains inaccessible to the community. A century of poor urban planning has divided the neighborhood with highways\, elevated train lines\, and multi-block building towers. The neighborhood lacks well designed pedestrian or bicycle infrastructure\, making many intersections dangerous or difficult to navigate. This project seeks to reframe the school grounds as a next great public space and an entry point for an accessible urban trail system to connect underutilized areas of the Bronx. \n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Permaculture and Urban Eco-System Design
DESCRIPTION:Permaculture\, a portmanteau of permanent and agriculture\, is sometimes described as strategies for sustainable agriculture\, with the twin goals of maximizing yield and maintaining optimum long-term ecological health. With increasing numbers of people living in cities\, and urban agriculture the subject of perennially renewed interest\, permaculture offers many strategies beyond urban gardening that can be applied to both the design of the urban ecosystem and the modern city-dweller lifestyle.\n \nThrough this broader lens\, permaculture is a whole-systems approach to human society\, probing the ecological and sociological connections between human behavior and our cultivation of natural resources. Far broader than mere sustainable agriculture\, permaculture is a design methodology for the human-ecological condition\, and is the best answer to the question “What next?” Permaculture has the potential to transform the future\, but first we have to bring it mainstream. How do we scale permaculture to redesign the massive agricultural\, food\, and consumer culture systems for long-term health and sustainability? What is the way forward given the sociopolitical challenges we currently face? How can a focus on local actions collectively alter a global system? Our experts will be discussing these questions and more at our permaculture forum on April 3rd\, 2017. \n \n\nModerator: Hillary Brown\, FAIA\, Professor of Architecture at the City College of New York’s Spitzer School of Architecture\, Program Director\, City College’s Sustainability in the Urban Environment\n \nPanelists: Andrew Faust\, Permaculture and Bioregional Educator\, Designer at Center for Bioregional Living; Ashley Muse\, Senior Sustainability Manager\, YR&G; Philip Silva\, Co-founder and Co-director\, TreeKIT; Associate Editor\, The Nature of Cities; Ben Flanner\, Founder\, Brooklyn Grange; Monica Ibacache\, Founder and Executive Director\, Beyond Organic Design

SUMMARY:Volunteer with TAC and City Harvest
DESCRIPTION:On January 28th\, The Active Citizen is partnering with City Harvest to address hunger in New York City by volunteering at a mobile market. Food insecurity impacts approximately 1.4 million New Yorkers. For many of these New Yorkers\, healthy food is unavailable and unaffordable. Lack of access to enough food for an active\, healthy life can have devestating consequences on communities\, and diseases related to poor nutrition\, including diabetes and heart disease\, are often concentrated where demand for emergency food is the greatest. \nTAC will be working at the mobile market\, a farmers-market style food distribution\, to provide fruits and vegetables to low-income communities.  Mobile markets provide the opportunity to lend strong\, direct services to communities in need and we are excited for this event! Please sign up to secure your spot and dress appropriately as we will be working outside.

SUMMARY:Urban Food Policy Forum: Beyond the Kale: Urban Agriculture and Social Justice Activism in New York City
DESCRIPTION:Part of our Urban Food Policy Forum series. \nUrban agriculture is increasingly considered an important part of creating just and sustainable cities. Yet the benefits that many people attribute to urban agriculture—fresh food\, green space\, educational opportunities—can mask structural inequities\, thereby making political transformation harder to achieve. Realizing social and environmental justice requires moving beyond food production to address deeper issues such as structural racism\, gender inequity\, and economic disparities. \nIn their new book\, Beyond the Kale: Urban Agriculture and Social Justice Activism in New York City\, CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute Research Director Nevin Cohen and Professor of Environmental Studies and Food Studies at the New School Kristin Reynolds illustrate how some urban farmers and gardeners not only grow healthy food for their communities but also use their activities and spaces to disrupt the dynamics of power and privilege that perpetuate inequity. Beyond the Kale argues that urban agricultural projects focused explicitly on dismantling oppressive systems have the greatest potential to achieve substantive social change. \nJoin us for a presentation and discussion of their findings. \nPlease note that your RSVP automatically adds you to our mailing list.
