SUMMARY:Permaculture and Urban Eco-System Design
DESCRIPTION:Permaculture\, a portmanteau of permanent and agriculture\, is sometimes described as strategies for sustainable agriculture\, with the twin goals of maximizing yield and maintaining optimum long-term ecological health. With increasing numbers of people living in cities\, and urban agriculture the subject of perennially renewed interest\, permaculture offers many strategies beyond urban gardening that can be applied to both the design of the urban ecosystem and the modern city-dweller lifestyle.\n \nThrough this broader lens\, permaculture is a whole-systems approach to human society\, probing the ecological and sociological connections between human behavior and our cultivation of natural resources. Far broader than mere sustainable agriculture\, permaculture is a design methodology for the human-ecological condition\, and is the best answer to the question “What next?” Permaculture has the potential to transform the future\, but first we have to bring it mainstream. How do we scale permaculture to redesign the massive agricultural\, food\, and consumer culture systems for long-term health and sustainability? What is the way forward given the sociopolitical challenges we currently face? How can a focus on local actions collectively alter a global system? Our experts will be discussing these questions and more at our permaculture forum on April 3rd\, 2017. \n \n\nModerator: Hillary Brown\, FAIA\, Professor of Architecture at the City College of New York’s Spitzer School of Architecture\, Program Director\, City College’s Sustainability in the Urban Environment\n \nPanelists: Andrew Faust\, Permaculture and Bioregional Educator\, Designer at Center for Bioregional Living; Ashley Muse\, Senior Sustainability Manager\, YR&G; Philip Silva\, Co-founder and Co-director\, TreeKIT; Associate Editor\, The Nature of Cities; Ben Flanner\, Founder\, Brooklyn Grange; Monica Ibacache\, Founder and Executive Director\, Beyond Organic Design

SUMMARY:Volunteer with TAC and City Harvest
DESCRIPTION:On January 28th\, The Active Citizen is partnering with City Harvest to address hunger in New York City by volunteering at a mobile market. Food insecurity impacts approximately 1.4 million New Yorkers. For many of these New Yorkers\, healthy food is unavailable and unaffordable. Lack of access to enough food for an active\, healthy life can have devestating consequences on communities\, and diseases related to poor nutrition\, including diabetes and heart disease\, are often concentrated where demand for emergency food is the greatest. \nTAC will be working at the mobile market\, a farmers-market style food distribution\, to provide fruits and vegetables to low-income communities.  Mobile markets provide the opportunity to lend strong\, direct services to communities in need and we are excited for this event! Please sign up to secure your spot and dress appropriately as we will be working outside.

SUMMARY:Urban Food Policy Forum: Beyond the Kale: Urban Agriculture and Social Justice Activism in New York City
DESCRIPTION:Part of our Urban Food Policy Forum series. \nUrban agriculture is increasingly considered an important part of creating just and sustainable cities. Yet the benefits that many people attribute to urban agriculture—fresh food\, green space\, educational opportunities—can mask structural inequities\, thereby making political transformation harder to achieve. Realizing social and environmental justice requires moving beyond food production to address deeper issues such as structural racism\, gender inequity\, and economic disparities. \nIn their new book\, Beyond the Kale: Urban Agriculture and Social Justice Activism in New York City\, CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute Research Director Nevin Cohen and Professor of Environmental Studies and Food Studies at the New School Kristin Reynolds illustrate how some urban farmers and gardeners not only grow healthy food for their communities but also use their activities and spaces to disrupt the dynamics of power and privilege that perpetuate inequity. Beyond the Kale argues that urban agricultural projects focused explicitly on dismantling oppressive systems have the greatest potential to achieve substantive social change. \nJoin us for a presentation and discussion of their findings. \nPlease note that your RSVP automatically adds you to our mailing list. SUMMARY:The Future of Food: An Actionable Evening
DESCRIPTION:Ken Cook and Frank Lipman will explore the alarming changes in Americans’ diets and health\, and take a deep dive into our food system to reveal the reasons why our country is trapped in toxic farming\, environmental destruction and stratified food supplies – and what it means for your health. \nAmericans’ health has declined dramatically in recent decades: Cases of chronic and severe health conditions including obesity\, reproductive issues and cancer have increased notably. Could these major health issues be traced back to the food you consume\, and how it is managed and grown? Frank Lipman will reveal the clinical health perspective on chemicals found in food and in our bodies\, while Ken Cook will discuss current U.S. food policies\, their destructive effects on our food system and health\, and the changes that are necessary to put our nation back on track. This is a conversation you won’t want to miss. \nDoors open at 6:30pm; Conversation begins at 7pm

SUMMARY:Every Tuesday Young Sprouts Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Young Sprouts is a FREE BPCPC’s gardening program for children 3 to 5 years old and an accompanying adult. \nThe event happens every week until August 30th. \nAmong the simple gardening projects appropriate for preschoolers are: planting seeds\, watering the garden\, and tasting fresh greens and vegetables – all organically grown. \nChildren will see a variety of plants\, butterflies\, insects\, worms\, and birds – all part of the natural cycle of the garden.  Children will feel cool water on a hot day and the different textures of leaves and plants in the garden. They will smell herbs (lemon verbena\, dill\, mint\, and basil) and flowers (lavender\, marigold\, and scented geraniums). \nEach week there is a new\, garden-themed lesson\, including learning about pollinators\, worms\, seeds\, weather\, flowers\, birds\, and more. Young children will have fun in the garden doing plant scavenger hunts\,  and reading nature books related to the day’s theme. By exposing children to these outdoor activities at a young age\, we hope to foster a lifelong love of nature. Please arrive on time\, as space is limited.

SUMMARY:The Battery Fair
DESCRIPTION:The Battery Conservancy will celebrate the grand opening of The Battery Oval with a weekend fair (6/25-6/26) to engage the public in our region’s biodiversity and its emerging food and plant producers\, illustrating The Battery’s core values. \nOver the past two decades\, The Battery has transformed New York’s birthplace park into an oasis of vast perennial gardens\, educational farm plots\, toxin-free lawns\, and sinuous bicycle paths. The Battery Fair reinstates one of the oldest uses of civic space\, the public market\, at one of New York’s most prominent public parks. Since antiquity\, public markets have protected and promoted fresh food\, regional economies\, and vibrant civic spaces.  The Battery Fair creates a new public stage for local food and plant purveyors inspired by this history and dedicated to the ongoing revitalization of Lower Manhattan. \nThe fair will showcase innovations in agriculture\, horticulture\, food\, and craft\, emphasize the connections between food production and plant production\, and support and connect local small batch entrepreneurs who are defining alternative\, sustainable systems of natural production without compromising taste and beauty. \nVendors will include: KingLeche Cremes\, Lotus Scoop\, Roni-Sue’s Chocolates\, Amy’s Bread\, Brooklyn Cider House\, GrowNYC Recycling\, and much more. \nImage: http://www.thebattery.org/things-to-do/thebatteryfair/
