SUMMARY:Good Food Documentary: Food Chains
DESCRIPTION:In this exposé\, an intrepid group of Florida farmworkers battle to defeat the $4 trillion global supermarket industry through their ingenious Fair Food program\, which partners with growers and retailers to improve working conditions for farm laborers in the United States. \nFood Chains reveals the human cost in our food supply and the complicity of large buyers of produce like fast food and supermarkets. Fast food is big\, but supermarkets are bigger – earning $4 trillion globally. They have tremendous power over the agricultural system. Over the past 3 decades they have drained revenue from their supply chain leaving farmworkers in poverty and forced to work under subhuman conditions. Yet many take no responsibility for this.\nMore information on the film’s website. \n

SUMMARY:SummerStage - Free Performance in the Park
DESCRIPTION:London siblings Kitty\, Daisy & Lewis Durham are talented songwriters/musicians whose background is rooted in the tradition where songs are handed down and sung at family gatherings\, playing any instrument they lay their hands on. Their songs are an eclectic mix up of Pop\, R’n’B & Blues\, Psychedelic Rock\, Soul\, Country\, Jazz and Ska. On the group’s latest album\, Kitty\, Daisy & Lewis The Third\, themes of fresh adulthood and lost loves run throughout. With the enlisted help of legendary Clash guitarist Mick Jones as producer\, KD&L recorded The Third in their self-constructed\, 16-track analogue studio in a derelict Indian restaurant in Camden Town. The band has sold over a quarter of a million albums worldwide\, sold out headline tours and have opened shows for major bands including Coldplay and Stereophonics. From a very young age they have been inspiring audiences at their packed shows\, each taking turns on vocals and jumping from one instrument to another. Joining them on stage are their mum former Raincoats drummer Ingrid Weiss on bass\, the original Bombay Bad Boy – Daddy Grazz – on rhythm guitar\, and Jamaican trumpet legend Eddie “Tan Tan” Thornton.

SUMMARY:The Final Mile: How Great Cities Are Fed
DESCRIPTION:Open House New York invites you to a very special lecture with Karen Karp\, president of Karp Resources\, to kick offThe Final Mile: Food Systems of New York\, a new year-long series of tours and talks exploring the architecture of New York City’s multi-layered food system.\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn about how the movement of food has impacted the shape\, look\, and flow of the physical city: its buildings\, its infrastructure\, and its public spaces. Discover how the evolution of the food system has mirrored–and even facilitated–historical population shifts\, and consider how current trends might re-shape the city again over the coming decades\, as New York City looks to add another 1.5 million residents by 2030. Karp will frame the relationship between food and cities and lay out some of the key issues that we will explore over the coming year through The Final Mile. \nAbout Karen Karp\nKaren Karp is a leading authority on food systems and New York City’s good food movement with over 25 years of experience in specialty food retail\, agriculture\, and restaurants. Since 1990\, when she founded Karp Resources\, she has excelled at creating solutions for food system issues by building unique cross sector partnerships that explore the interconnection between agriculture\, food\, policy\, and people. \nThe Final Mile: Food Systems of New York is a year-long series of public programs\, organized by Open House New York as part of its ongoing Urban Systems Series. The Final Mile is intended to shed light on New York City’s dynamic and multi-layered food economy while introducing and exploring approaches to render this invisible system more tangible.\nReservations for this lecture are required. Admission is free for OHNY Members\, OHNY Volunteers and students with valid ID. $10 for general public. \nRegister HERE!

SUMMARY:Family Workshops at Dulce De Harlem Community Garden
DESCRIPTION:Citizens Committee for New York City & Envi Harlem \nwelcome you to take part in \nFREE FAMILY WORKSHOPS at the Dulce de Harlem Community Garden! \nWhere: Dulce de Harlem Saturday Workshops\, 620 West 148th Street (between Broadway and Riverside Drive) \nWhen: 1PM on October 11\, 18\, 25\, and November 1 (Rain or Shine) \nRefreshments will be served. Please confirm attendance at enviharlem@gmail.com \nIndoor Container Gardening \nSaturday\, October 11 \nWe invite families\, groups\, or individuals to join us this Saturday to kick off our Fall Workshop Series at Dulce de Harlem\, where we’ll be transplanting plants from the garden to containers\, and taking them indoors for the fall and winter seasons. We invite you to take a plant home with you\, and brighten up your apartment this cold season. We will have plants for you to select from\, herbs or flowers (mint\, mums\, and more!) There will be supplies for you to decorate pots and planters with to add that extra personal touch. \nMake Your Own Pickles (and pickle your veggies!) \nSaturday\, October 18 \nCome join us for our second workshop this fall\, where we will learn about the ancient craft of pickling. Bring your friends\, your favorite veggies\, and a jar if you have one\, and join us in a celebration of fermentation. In this lesson\, we will learn about food preservation and spoilage\, as well as the friendly (and not-so-friendly) bacteria involved in it. We will taste a number of different pickles\, discuss the various ingredients in pickle recipes\, learn about the process of fermentation\, and make some pickles of our own. If you have a vegetable that you’d like to experience pickled\, bring it with you! All necessary supplies will be provided\, although supplemental supplies are appreciated (jars\, vegetables\, utensils\, spices). \nSeed Saving & Pumpkin Carving \nSaturday\, October 25 \nPartake in the annual gardening tradition of Seed Saving with us this this season\, as the garden begins to wind down for the fall and winter. In this workshop\, we will learn all about seeds through various hands-on activities. We will collect seeds from our plants to use next spring\, and make wildflower seed-balls (to be tossed by guerilla gardeners of all ages). We’ll also be carving jack-o-lanterns for this upcoming Halloween. We might even roast some pumpkin seeds as a mid-autumn snack! (Bring your carving tools\, pumpkins will be provided.) \nCompost: A New Beginning \nSaturday\, November 1 \nOur final workshop this season will be all about composting! Save your food scraps and other organic waste\, join us on a compost project at Dulce. We will be building a lasagna garden bed (a garden built out of food scraps)\, in which we will plant some late-season grains and garlic. Next season\, our lasagna bed will be a verdant veggie patch! This session\, we will also explore Dulce de Harlem’s other composting facilities; this is an excellent opportunity to get involved with composting at Dulce\, or learn more about the process. \nFor more info\, visit: www.enviharlem.com \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
