DESCRIPTION:The Waterfront Alliance’s City of Water Day is a free\, family-oriented celebration of the world-class potential of the New York and New Jersey waterfront held every July. Now in its ninth year\, this event has grown into the region’s biggest harbor festival. \nHeld on Governors Island\, New York; Maxwell Place Park\, Hoboken\, New Jersey; and dozens of In Your Neighborhood locations around New York Harbor\, the event draws thousands of people to the water for a day of fun. \nHighlights of the day include free boat tours on all kinds of vessels\, from tall ships to tugboats. There is also free rowing\, kayaking\, paddle-boarding\, and the riotous Con Edison Cardboard Kayak Race; and the Waterfront Activity Fair and Children Activities Fair offer something for the whole family. \nPlease note that City of Water Day—including boat tours—is held rain or shine! On-water activities will be postponed or suspended only in the case of thunder and lightening.

DESCRIPTION:Calling all Makers! Join us at our outdoor Maker Space for weekly workshops challenging participants to design and construct solutions to real-world problems. Guided Maker workshops challenge participants to design and construct projects inspired by science and river concepts. Learn about the Hudson River through an engineering scope. Come tinker\, test and build! \nEach Maker workshop has two components: a Build Challenge and a “Larger than Life” build. Build Challenges are accompanied by a small educational piece to inform the building and design of the theme project. After completing the Build Challenge\, participants are invited to think big and build with materials such as dowels\, PVC pipes\, pool noodles and grid beams. You can design your own skyscrapers\, forts\, tunnels\, or whatever you make up! \nBuild Challenges: \nSquid Suction Cup Grabber (7/7): Skilletfish and longfin squid both have suction cup adaptations. Using common items\, build your own suction-powered vacuum to pick up small objects. \nOyster Restoration Mat (7/14): Help Hudson River Park construct new oyster habitat. With recycled oyster shells\, design and create a space for organisms to settle in the River. \nPlankton Mechanics (7/21): Plankton are microscopic plants and animals that float under the water’s surface. Using craft materials\, build a plankton model that is able to remain in the center of the water column\, just like in nature. \nBionic Hand (7/28): The human hand is made up of numerous tendons. DESCRIPTION:Young Sprouts is a FREE BPCPC’s gardening program for children 3 to 5 years old and an accompanying adult. \nThe event happens every week until August 30th. \nAmong the simple gardening projects appropriate for preschoolers are: planting seeds\, watering the garden\, and tasting fresh greens and vegetables – all organically grown. \nChildren will see a variety of plants\, butterflies\, insects\, worms\, and birds – all part of the natural cycle of the garden.  Children will feel cool water on a hot day and the different textures of leaves and plants in the garden. They will smell herbs (lemon verbena\, dill\, mint\, and basil) and flowers (lavender\, marigold\, and scented geraniums). \nEach week there is a new\, garden-themed lesson\, including learning about pollinators\, worms\, seeds\, weather\, flowers\, birds\, and more. Young children will have fun in the garden doing plant scavenger hunts\,  and reading nature books related to the day’s theme. By exposing children to these outdoor activities at a young age\, we hope to foster a lifelong love of nature. Leaving a large family dinner to chase her dog into a snowstorm\, Dorothy (Diana Ross) is swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the land of Oz\, which looks suspiciously like a skewed version of the run-down Manhattan of the late ’70s. Landing on top of the Wicked Witch of the East\, the puzzled Dorothy is greeted by munchkins who peel themselves from a graffiti mural and sing to her about the Wiz (Richard Pryor)\, a powerful wizard living in Emerald City who can help her get home. On her journey down the yellow brick road\, she encounters a garbage-stuffed scarecrow (Michael Jackson) in a junkyard\, a broken-down tin man (Nipsey Russell) caught in the decay of an old amusement park\, and a cowardly lion (Ted Ross) posing as a stone statue outside a museum. The quartet tangles with a subway station that comes to life\, a poppy den\, and a gaggle of motorcycle henchman on their way to the Wiz who orders them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West (a sweatshop tyrant) before he will grant them their wishes. \nKnow Before You Go\nYou should arrive before 8:00 p.m. to get your spot.
