SUMMARY:Eco Fashion Expo
DESCRIPTION:It is estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that the U.S. disposes approximately 12.8 million tons of textiles annually. This number has increased largely due to the rise of ‘fast fashion’\, in which clothing is essentially so inexpensive that it is practically seen as disposable to the typical consumer. Although many retail companies and nonprofit organizations have been making efforts to collect old clothing\, much of it still ends up in the landfills. Since many companies outsource their clothing\, much of the most severe impacts are seen abroad. Fueled by these alarming facts\, we believe it is incredibly important that the student body is informed of these negative impacts in a visual\, yet creative way\, which is why we organized an eco-fashion show. Our goal is to promote sustainable fashion choices and values in the Hunter and NYC community. We want to open people’s eyes to the great possibilities that “trash” can become\, encouraging reuse and repurposing. SUMMARY:Conference on the Global Pact for the Environment
DESCRIPTION:CCSI and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN)\, under the guidance of Prof. Jeffrey Sachs\, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on the SDGs\, and Laurent Fabius\, President of the Constitutional Council of the French Republic\, will host a one-day conference to present and discuss the blueprint for a Global Pact for the Environment. The conference will build on the successful June 2017 launch of the Global Pact in Paris\, which brought together prominent leaders to discuss the draft pact and its role in moving the environment and development agendas forward.  \nCoinciding with the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly\, this Conference will offer a high-level opportunity to explore the complex legal and political challenges of the Global Pact in light of existing agreements and soft law principles on the environment\, and the current global political scene. \nThe conference’s sessions will explore the scope and impact of the proposed Global Pact\, including high-level panels on: \n– the normative and legal case for the Global Pact on the Environment\, the main legal challenges and opportunities presented by the Pact\, and the ways in which the Pact can shape State and corporate responsibilities and behavior;\n– the foundation for implementation and enforcement of the Global Pact established by existing jurisprudence on international environmental law\, as well as the legal mechanisms proposed by the Pact and their application; and\n– the role of diverse stakeholders in moving the environmental governance agenda forward\, and emerging opportunities for collaboration and shared value creation among companies\, governments\, state institutions\, and civil society. \nConfirmed speakers include: \n– Yann Aguila\, Chair of the Environmental Law Commission\, Club des Juristes\n– Laurence Boisson de Chazournes\, Professor of Law\, University of Geneva\n– Maxine Burkett\, Professor of Law\, William S. DESCRIPTION:Want to learn how to fix your bike?\nTime’s Up! now has two bicycle workshop locations! \nAll workshops and classes are free\, however\, donations are welcome. \nOn Tuesday nights in Manhattan\, we have outdoor bike repair classes which introduce basics of bicycle maintenance.  Wednesday (Brooklyn) and Sunday (Brooklyn) nights are open workshops where you can bring your own bicycle and work on it yourself with the aid of Time’s Up! mechanics. On Sundays we have classes and then an open workshop in Brooklyn. Time’s Up! also runs a recycle a bike program which has recycled 1000’s of bicycles and put them back into the hands of new cyclists. We are always ready to accept your donations in the NYC area. These low-cost bicycles can be purchased Wednesday and Sunday after 4 PM the Time’s Up! Brooklyn space. DESCRIPTION:Coastal Cleanup Volunteers give back to the community by helping us remove hundreds of pounds of trash from Pier 1 salt marshes and beaches. Scheduled times are according to low tides\, from May through October. \nAll volunteers must fill out a waiver on site and submit it before any activity begins. Volunteers 18 years old or younger should submit their waiver signed by a parent or guardian; volunteers 16 years old or younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  \nGroups with 10 members or fewer are welcome to join in our 2-hour long Coastal Cleanup sessions. Space is limited. SUMMARY:Preserving the Summer Harvest: Learn to Make Jam with the Brooklyn Fräulein
DESCRIPTION:Join the Brooklyn Fräulein\, Nicole Rutsch\,  to learn the basics of making both sweet and savory jams. Once we’ve made our introductions we’ll take a tour of the rooftop farm and harvest the tomatoes\, ground cherries and herbs that we will use for our jams. \nBack in the kitchen\, Nicole will walk us through the steps of making her signature tomato jam\, as well as quick and preserved pickles and will show you the basics of how to safely preserve using the boiling water bath process and other canning techniques. \nNicole will also share some of her favorite recipes using jams for way more than just your morning toast! We will munch on some of her bites + enjoy jam-infused drinks as she shares how to use jams in marinades\, on sandwiches\, in baking\, and more!  Workshop attendees will go home with a jar of jam and recipe cards.
