SUMMARY:Lemon Creek Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Lemon Creek is one of the longest aboveground creeks in New York City\, and its route cuts deeply into the history of Staten Island. Once famous for its oysters and oystermen\, it was a favorite haunt of author Joseph Mitchell in the 1950s\, and is now a Staten Island Bluebelt\, harboring eagles\, peacocks\, and deer. Join writer and photographer Nathan Kensinger on a walk tracing out the lower portions of this fascinating waterway\, as it flows through historic neighborhoods and protected parklands\, and out to Prince’s Bay. \nSturdy\, closed-toed shoes are recommended for this walk\, which will involve following footpaths over streams and through wooded environments. We will start at Amboy Road and Penton Street and end the walk at Bayview Ave. and Johnston Terrace. \nThis walking tour is sponsored by Council Member Joseph Borelli. \nRain date: June 23rd.

There are two ways you can help: \nChipping Locations \nYou can bring your tree to a chipping location on January 6 and 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We’ll chip your tree\, and give you your very own bag of mulch! Find a chipping location!  \nDrop Off Locations \nOr you can bring your tree to a drop-off site from Sunday\, December 31\, 2017 through Sunday\, January 7\, 2018. SUMMARY:Compost Workday
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer with one of New York City’s oldest community composting programs! The Lower East Side Ecology Center in partnership with the NYC Compost Project diverts over 450 tons of food scraps from landfills annually. Food scraps are collected locally and then processed into compost at the East River Park Compost Yard. The finished compost is then used for community greening projects to revitalize tree beds and soils across the city. \nThe Ecology Center and the NYC Compost Project currently seek volunteers to participate in their Compost Volunteer Workday on the Last Thursday of every month from 1-3PM. Work gloves will be provided. \nVOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES: \n\nSifting and bagging finished compost\nGeneral compost site maintenance such as cleaning up debris\nSite organization\nOther activities related to the composting operations\n\nREQUIREMENTS: \n\nBe at least 18 years old\nWear closed-toed shoes and weather appropriate clothing that can get dirty.
