SUMMARY:Beekeeping 101: Honey Extraction
DESCRIPTION:Harvest\, filter\, jar\, and taste the freshest honey in NYC! \nSo\, you’ve spent the summer learning all about bees now it’s time to reap the sweet rewards of your efforts! For the third installment of our summer beekeeping series you’re in for a treat\, It’s time for honey harvest!   \nThere’s no classroom component to this hands-on course.  Instead\, we’ll head right on up to the rooftop apiary\, where participants will first learn how to differentiate between unripe nectar and honey that is ready to harvest.  Once we’ve determined that the bees have finished their work and the honey has thickened to a stable viscosity\, beekeeper Carin Zinter will show us how to remove the bees from the honey manually. \nFrom there\, we’ll move into the extraction room where participants will uncap frames of honey for extraction; extract honey with a centrifugal honey extractor; filter and jar the honey\, and take part in a honey tasting.  You’ll never take a teaspoon of honey for granted again.
