DESCRIPTION:Bring your holiday tree to a designated city park to be recycled into mulch that will nourish plantings across the city! \nJoin NYC Parks\, the New York City Department of Sanitation \, and GreeNYC  to recycle your Christmas trees into wood chips. These wood chips are used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide. Or\, take home your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree. More than 26\,000 trees were recycled last year. Help us top this number! \nHow to ‘Chip In’ \nThis year\, MulchFest will take place on January 6 and 7\, 2018. It’s easier than ever to chip in! There are two ways you can help: \nChipping Locations \nYou can bring your tree to a chipping location on January 6 and 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We’ll chip your tree\, and give you your very own bag of mulch! Find a chipping location!  \nDrop Off Locations \nOr you can bring your tree to a drop-off site from Sunday\, December 31\, 2017 through Sunday\, January 7\, 2018. Leave your tree with us\, and we’ll recycle it for you later! DESCRIPTION:Volunteer with one of New York City’s oldest community composting programs! The Lower East Side Ecology Center in partnership with the NYC Compost Project diverts over 450 tons of food scraps from landfills annually. Food scraps are collected locally and then processed into compost at the East River Park Compost Yard. The finished compost is then used for community greening projects to revitalize tree beds and soils across the city. \nThe Ecology Center and the NYC Compost Project currently seek volunteers to participate in their Compost Volunteer Workday on the Last Thursday of every month from 1-3PM. Work gloves will be provided. \nVOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES: \n\nSifting and bagging finished compost\nGeneral compost site maintenance such as cleaning up debris\nSite organization\nOther activities related to the composting operations\n\nREQUIREMENTS: \n\nBe at least 18 years old\nWear closed-toed shoes and weather appropriate clothing that can get dirty. SUMMARY:Conference on the Global Pact for the Environment
DESCRIPTION:CCSI and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN)\, under the guidance of Prof. Jeffrey Sachs\, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on the SDGs\, and Laurent Fabius\, President of the Constitutional Council of the French Republic\, will host a one-day conference to present and discuss the blueprint for a Global Pact for the Environment. The conference will build on the successful June 2017 launch of the Global Pact in Paris\, which brought together prominent leaders to discuss the draft pact and its role in moving the environment and development agendas forward.  \nCoinciding with the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly\, this Conference will offer a high-level opportunity to explore the complex legal and political challenges of the Global Pact in light of existing agreements and soft law principles on the environment\, and the current global political scene. \nThe conference’s sessions will explore the scope and impact of the proposed Global Pact\, including high-level panels on: \n– the normative and legal case for the Global Pact on the Environment\, the main legal challenges and opportunities presented by the Pact\, and the ways in which the Pact can shape State and corporate responsibilities and behavior;\n– the foundation for implementation and enforcement of the Global Pact established by existing jurisprudence on international environmental law\, as well as the legal mechanisms proposed by the Pact and their application; and\n– the role of diverse stakeholders in moving the environmental governance agenda forward\, and emerging opportunities for collaboration and shared value creation among companies\, governments\, state institutions\, and civil society. \nConfirmed speakers include: \n– Yann Aguila\, Chair of the Environmental Law Commission\, Club des Juristes\n– Laurence Boisson de Chazournes\, Professor of Law\, University of Geneva\n– Maxine Burkett\, Professor of Law\, William S. DESCRIPTION:Coastal Cleanup Volunteers give back to the community by helping us remove hundreds of pounds of trash from Pier 1 salt marshes and beaches. Scheduled times are according to low tides\, from May through October. \nAll volunteers must fill out a waiver on site and submit it before any activity begins. Volunteers 18 years old or younger should submit their waiver signed by a parent or guardian; volunteers 16 years old or younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  \nGroups with 10 members or fewer are welcome to join in our 2-hour long Coastal Cleanup sessions. The festival is organized in partnership with three major New York City cultural institutions: New York Live Arts\, The 8th Floor\, and the Queens Museum. \nThe festival is an extension of What Will Be Different: Conversations on a Changing America\, a traveling discussion series that explores how diverse issues and communities are affected by an era of sweeping political change. \n \nShahana Hanif is a Brooklyn-born Bangladeshi performance artist\, storyteller\, disability justice activist\, and community organizer rooted in immigrant rights and representation\, affordable housing\, and language access. She spearheaded CAAAV: Organizing Asian Communities’ public housing organizing program\, through which she builds the grassroots community power of low-income\, immigrant Bangladeshi\, Korean\, and Chinese tenants. A founding member of the Muslim Writers Collective NYC\, Shahana has also developed a widely used Bangla social justice language bank resource guide. \nAn accomplished filmmaker\, Paola Mendoza focuses much of her work around “marginalized stories\,” including those of immigrants\, women\, and children. After the presidential election\, she learned that her friend Carmen Perez was helping plan a massive march in Washington\, D.C. for the day after the inauguration. Mendoza called Perez and expressed her enthusiasm. “I’ll do whatever you need me to do\,” she said. Mendoza then became the Artistic Director for what became one of the largest demonstrations in U.S. history. She marched for her son Mateo Ali\, “so he knows never to sit back in silence when injustice happens.” \nComposer/pianist Samora Pinderhughes is known for big multidisciplinary projects and his use of music to examine sociopolitical issues. He has performed in Carnegie Hall\, MoMA\, The White House and elsewhere\, and toured abroad with Branford Marsalis and others. She is a co-founder of the Chinatown Art Brigade\, a cultural collective that tells stories of Chinatown tenants fighting gentrification. Her documentary Resilience\, about her garment worker mother fighting sweatshop conditions\, screened at national and international film festivals. She won the 2017 Aronson Journalism for Social Justice Documentary Award for her film\, Three Tours\, and she is a 2017-2018 Fellow of the Intercultural Leadership Institute. bettyyu.net \nMODERATOR: Lisa Cortés\, executive producer of the Academy Award© winning Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire\, is a pioneer. Her work with Rush Artist Management\, Def Jam Records\, and Lee Daniels Entertainment has defined a career distinguished by her commitment to empowering diverse voices in front of and behind the camera. Her productions have received over 70 international awards and nominations\, including the Academy Award\, the Golden Globe\, the Berlinale Golden Bear\, and the Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize among others. She launched her production company\, Cortés Films\, in 2012. \nPERFORMANCE: SLV is the musical project of multi-instrumentalist songwriters Sandra Lilia Velásquez and Sean Dixon. Velasquez is the founder of the critically acclaimed Latin band Pistolera\, which released three studio albums and toured extensively in the USA and abroad. Dixon is drummer for the electronic band Zammuto. We will remove invasive weeds\, and mulch with compost and wood chips. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or a newcomer to the gardening scene\, all are welcome! Please come prepared to work outside\, and wear cloth you do not mind getting dirty and sturdy shoes. DESCRIPTION:Stuyvesant Cove Park is an all-native plant\, organically maintained public park located on the East River between 18th and 23rd Street. Regular volunteer events are held monthly from April through November. Come learn about gardening and New York City’s unique local flora while taking in the fresh air\, building community and getting your hands dirty! These events are great for people of all ages\, abilities and levels of experience. \nVolunteer activities include weeding\, mulching\, planting\, watering and other light clean up and maintenance tasks. We also provide free workshops during select volunteer days to teach proper pruning techniques and other more specialized skills. \nAll volunteers should wear closed toed shoes\, clothes they don’t mind getting dirty\, and bring water bottles. Tree Care Workshop by Fruit Tree Planting Foundation and NYC Compost Project will follow planting event. \nDJ Omar Morsy combines his love for gardening and music for this first ever Bronx Music Garden event. With our majestic new community garden as a backdrop\, the rhythms will pulse our Bronx students and neighbors as we plant\, play and groove to DJ sets with an earth beat in mind and live performances by Never Yet Contested and Ane. If you’ve been lucky enough to attend any number of our events over the last few years you will have already delighted in the delicious garden to table offerings of Executive Chef Noah Sheetz. With as many sustainability students as we can muster\, we’ll show you what we do: gardening\, community art making\, sustainability exhibits\, games and prizes. A unique and groundbreaking event with fun for all ages! \nThe Baldwin Learning Center and Trail Project is centered on the Dewitt Clinton High School campus and the surrounding neighborhood of Norwood in the North Bronx. This neighborhood has one of the highest percentages of green space to population in New York City\, but this wealth of public space remains inaccessible to the community. A century of poor urban planning has divided the neighborhood with highways\, elevated train lines\, and multi-block building towers. The neighborhood lacks well designed pedestrian or bicycle infrastructure\, making many intersections dangerous or difficult to navigate. This project seeks to reframe the school grounds as a next great public space and an entry point for an accessible urban trail system to connect underutilized areas of the Bronx. \n\n\n\n\n\n

We will volunteer from 10am-12pm\, then enjoy some lunch together on the farm. \nThe Youth Farm is an education-focused production farm in Brooklyn that offers New Yorkers opportunities to increase their knowledge of the food system and build high level organic growing skills to share with their communities. The Youth Farm grows organic food and flowers on one acre for the community and beyond\, and offers hands-on farm training and leadership opportunities for youth and adults. It is located on the lawn of the Wingate Campus\, and is partnered with the High School for Public Service. \nExpect to get your hands dirty pitching in on a variety of organic farming activities: composting\, seed starting\, irrigation\, building projects\, harvests\, weeding and more. Make sure to wear sunscreen and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty\, and bring water and snacks. \nVolunteers must be 18+ years old.
