SUMMARY:Day of Planting and "Bronx Music Garden"
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION\n\n\n\n11:00 am to 2:00 pm – Kick Off Event and Tree Planting (Fruit Tree Planting Foundation\, DeWitt Clinton High School Sustainability\, vitafusionTM\, actress Jennie Garth)\n2:00 pm to 3:00 pm – Tree Care Workshop (Fruit Tree Planting Foundation and NYC Compost Project)\n3:00 pm to 4:00 pm – Meeting with Principal Pierre Orbe (Community and Project Partners)\n3:00 pm to 7:00 pm – Bronx Music Garden with DJ Omar Morsy and guest performers as well as ongoing Sustainability\, Art and Garden Projects – lots to get involved with!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails\nThere’s a full day happening at the new community garden at DeWitt Clinton High School on June 6. The makers of vitafusionTM\, the #1 adult gummy vitamin brand\, has joined forces with the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation (FTPF) to officially launch the “Fruit Tree Project” at our school and have donated to us 35 fruit trees to start an orchard! We are inviting you to lend a hand\, dig\, move compost\, learn how to plant and take care of trees and support our efforts to further transform our environment and feeds our community healthy fresh food. \nWe will gather at 11:00 am with actress Jennie Garth to kick off the day and will get to learn more about this project as well as The Baldwin Learning Center and Trail Project\, a reimagination of urban public space on the DeWitt Clinton High School campus and the surrounding neighborhood of Norwood in the North Bronx. Tree Care Workshop by Fruit Tree Planting Foundation and NYC Compost Project will follow planting event. \nDJ Omar Morsy combines his love for gardening and music for this first ever Bronx Music Garden event. With our majestic new community garden as a backdrop\, the rhythms will pulse our Bronx students and neighbors as we plant\, play and groove to DJ sets with an earth beat in mind and live performances by Never Yet Contested and Ane. If you’ve been lucky enough to attend any number of our events over the last few years you will have already delighted in the delicious garden to table offerings of Executive Chef Noah Sheetz. With as many sustainability students as we can muster\, we’ll show you what we do: gardening\, community art making\, sustainability exhibits\, games and prizes. A unique and groundbreaking event with fun for all ages! \nThe Baldwin Learning Center and Trail Project is centered on the Dewitt Clinton High School campus and the surrounding neighborhood of Norwood in the North Bronx. This neighborhood has one of the highest percentages of green space to population in New York City\, but this wealth of public space remains inaccessible to the community. A century of poor urban planning has divided the neighborhood with highways\, elevated train lines\, and multi-block building towers. The neighborhood lacks well designed pedestrian or bicycle infrastructure\, making many intersections dangerous or difficult to navigate. This project seeks to reframe the school grounds as a next great public space and an entry point for an accessible urban trail system to connect underutilized areas of the Bronx. \n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Brooklyn Farm Crew: 5/20 Brunch and Serve at the Youth Farm
DESCRIPTION:The Brooklyn Farm Crew is having its next farm day of the season! We are excited to join the Youth Farm for one of their monthly volunteer opportunities. We will volunteer from 10am-12pm\, then enjoy some lunch together on the farm. \nThe Youth Farm is an education-focused production farm in Brooklyn that offers New Yorkers opportunities to increase their knowledge of the food system and build high level organic growing skills to share with their communities. It is located on the lawn of the Wingate Campus\, and is partnered with the High School for Public Service. \nExpect to get your hands dirty pitching in on a variety of organic farming activities: composting\, seed starting\, irrigation\, building projects\, harvests\, weeding and more. Make sure to wear sunscreen and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty\, and bring water and snacks. \nVolunteers must be 18+ years old.

SUMMARY:March for Science New York City
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the March for Science in New York City! \nThe March for Science is a celebration of our passion for science and a call to support and safeguard the scientific community. Recent policy changes have caused heightened worry among scientists\, and the incredible and immediate outpouring of support has made clear that these concerns are also shared by hundreds of thousands of people around the world. The mischaracterization of science as a partisan issue\, which has given policymakers permission to reject overwhelming evidence\, is a critical and urgent matter. It is time for people who support scientific research and evidence-based policies to take a public stand and be counted. \nWant to volunteer? SUMMARY:Volunteer with TAC and City Harvest
DESCRIPTION:On January 28th\, The Active Citizen is partnering with City Harvest to address hunger in New York City by volunteering at a mobile market. Food insecurity impacts approximately 1.4 million New Yorkers. For many of these New Yorkers\, healthy food is unavailable and unaffordable. Lack of access to enough food for an active\, healthy life can have devestating consequences on communities\, and diseases related to poor nutrition\, including diabetes and heart disease\, are often concentrated where demand for emergency food is the greatest. \nTAC will be working at the mobile market\, a farmers-market style food distribution\, to provide fruits and vegetables to low-income communities.  Mobile markets provide the opportunity to lend strong\, direct services to communities in need and we are excited for this event! Please sign up to secure your spot and dress appropriately as we will be working outside.

SUMMARY:NYC Votes Get Out the Vote Phone Bank
DESCRIPTION:NYC Votes runs a Get Out the Vote program reminding New Yorker to head to the polls and vote on Election Day. \nThe CFB’s NYC Votes campaign promotes civic engagement through community outreach\, voter registration and engagement programs\, and educational resources. \nNYC Votes is the voter outreach and engagement campaign of the Campaign Finance Board\, conducted under the guidance of its Voter Assistance Advisory Committee (VAAC). \nUnder the NYC Votes banner\, the CFB registers citizens to vote\, showcases opportunities to get involved in civic life\, and provides New Yorkers with the information they need to engage meaningfully in the electoral process. \nNYC Votes reaches New Yorkers in person\, through broadcast media\, in the mail\, online\, and on social media. Its activities include high-profile programs such as National Voter Registration Day\, the city’s official nonpartisan Voter Guide\, Student Voter Registration Day\, the Youth Poet Laureate program\, “I Voted” stickers for city poll sites\, NYC Votes Advocacy Day at the State Legislature in Albany\, and the citywide Debate Program. \nWith the help of community partners and city agencies\, the CFB brings voter registration events and civic engagement programs to all five boroughs\, with a particular focus on historically disenfranchised communities\, as mandated in the City Charter. \n\nNYC Votes requires a short training before participating in our GOTV efforts.  GOTV will run from Sunday\, November 6 through Tuesday\, November 8.  Call new voters to encourage them to vote in the General Election. \nPhones\, scripts and call lists will be provided.  There will also be a short training at the beginning of the session.  This initiative will take place at 100 Church Street\, 12th Floor at the CFB office.
