DESCRIPTION:On January 28th\, The Active Citizen is partnering with City Harvest to address hunger in New York City by volunteering at a mobile market. Food insecurity impacts approximately 1.4 million New Yorkers. For many of these New Yorkers\, healthy food is unavailable and unaffordable. Lack of access to enough food for an active\, healthy life can have devestating consequences on communities\, and diseases related to poor nutrition\, including diabetes and heart disease\, are often concentrated where demand for emergency food is the greatest. \nTAC will be working at the mobile market\, a farmers-market style food distribution\, to provide fruits and vegetables to low-income communities.  Mobile markets provide the opportunity to lend strong\, direct services to communities in need and we are excited for this event! DESCRIPTION:NYC Votes runs a Get Out the Vote program reminding New Yorker to head to the polls and vote on Election Day. \nThe CFB’s NYC Votes campaign promotes civic engagement through community outreach\, voter registration and engagement programs\, and educational resources. \nNYC Votes is the voter outreach and engagement campaign of the Campaign Finance Board\, conducted under the guidance of its Voter Assistance Advisory Committee (VAAC). \nUnder the NYC Votes banner\, the CFB registers citizens to vote\, showcases opportunities to get involved in civic life\, and provides New Yorkers with the information they need to engage meaningfully in the electoral process. \nNYC Votes reaches New Yorkers in person\, through broadcast media\, in the mail\, online\, and on social media. Its activities include high-profile programs such as National Voter Registration Day\, the city’s official nonpartisan Voter Guide\, Student Voter Registration Day\, the Youth Poet Laureate program\, “I Voted” stickers for city poll sites\, NYC Votes Advocacy Day at the State Legislature in Albany\, and the citywide Debate Program. \nWith the help of community partners and city agencies\, the CFB brings voter registration events and civic engagement programs to all five boroughs\, with a particular focus on historically disenfranchised communities\, as mandated in the City Charter. \n\nNYC Votes requires a short training before participating in our GOTV efforts.  GOTV will run from Sunday\, November 6 through Tuesday\, November 8.  Call new voters to encourage them to vote in the General Election. \nPhones\, scripts and call lists will be provided.  There will also be a short training at the beginning of the session.  This initiative will take place at 100 Church Street\, 12th Floor at the CFB office.

DESCRIPTION:This year is the National Parks Centennial and here in NYC we have miles of beach access through NPS so we’re giving back! Come join in to support beaches + oceans + National Parks all in one go! \nJoin the NY chapter of Surfrider Foundation and the National Parks Conservation Association for a beach cleanup at Fort Tilden. Trash swept in from the ocean and scraps left over from beach goers tend to collect on this beautiful spot. Gloves and bags will be provided on site. \nDETAILS: \nNotes for attendees:  \nAll ages are welcome\, but children need to be accompanies by an adult. \nBring shoes appropriate for the sand and gloves if you have them handy (gloves will be distributed on the site if you don’t). DESCRIPTION:Join the 350NYC Divest Working Group to hear how fellow New Yorkers are combating climate change by encouraging the city to divest in fossil fuels. \n350.org is building a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis. Their online campaigns\, grassroots organizing\, and mass public actions are led from the bottom up by thousands of volunteer organizers\, like 350NYC\, in over 188 countries. \n350 means climate safety. To preserve our planet\, scientists tell us we must reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 392 parts per million to below 350 ppm. But 350 is more than a number—it’s a symbol of where we need to head as a planet. \nThe Climate Math \nWe can only burn 565 more gigatons of carbon dioxide and stay below 2°C of warming — anything more than that risks catastrophe for life on earth. Fossil fuel corporations now have 2\,795 gigatons in their coal\, oil and gas reserves\, five times the safe amount. May 23\, NYC Transition activists and permaculturists built a community garden with raised beds\, alongside Rockaway community members building back from Sandy devastation. Walls of the beds are made of wooden boards donated by Build it Green\, and burlap bags from coffee roaster White Coffee filled with wood chips from NYC Parks Dept.\, and filled with plants donated by Home Depot. This method can be used to create gardens on other urban sites anywhere with soil in need of remediation.
