SUMMARY:Summer Streets NyC
DESCRIPTION:Summer Streets is an annual celebration of New York City’s most valuable public space—our streets. On three consecutive Saturdays in August\, nearly seven miles of NYC’s streets are opened for people to play\, run\, walk and bike. Summer Streets provides space for healthy recreation and encourages New Yorkers to use more sustainable forms of transportation. In 2013\, more than 300\,000 people took advantage of the open streets. \nSummer Streets is modeled on other events from around the world including Ciclovía in Bogotá\, Colombia and the Paris Plage in France. The event is part bike tour\, part walking tour\, part block party—a great time for exercise\, people watching\, or just enjoying summer mornings. Passersby are weclome to participate in arts and crafts workshops\, listen to musical performances\, learn to salsa dance\, eat healthy snacks\, climb a 25′ climbing wall\, soar through the sky on a 160′ zipline and explore a 179 years voice tunnel. \nHeld between 7:00 am to 1:00 pm\, Summer Streets extends from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park\, along Park Avenue and connecting streets\, with easy access from all points in New York City\, allowing participants to plan a trip as long or short as they wish. All activities at Summer Streets are free of charge\, and designed for people of all ages and ability levels to share the streets respectfully. \nWith nearly 7 miles of open streets\, 5 rest stops and a seven-block-long art installation in the Park Avenue Tunnel – there is plenty to explore at Summer Streets. And remember\, everything at Summer Streets is free! \nClick here for full event listings!

SUMMARY:Engaging Artists Workshop: Artist as Activist
DESCRIPTION:Photo by: Jordan Seiler www.publicadcampaign.com \nArtists whose practice bridges the gap between art and activism will talk about their work. The artists’ experience will be enriched and contextualized through the workshop with professionals in the field as well as artists\, curators\, and activists. Paula Segal of 596 Acres and artists whose practice bridges the gap between art and activism will talk about their work: Jordan Seiler (http://www.publicadcampaign.com/)\, Caroline Woolard of NYCTBD (http://nyctbd.com/)\, and more to be announced. \nEngaging Artists encourages local artists to deepen their understanding of socially engaged art through volunteer opportunities and interactive workshops with professionals in the fields of fine art and activism. During this six-week program\, participants are required to volunteer at least a half a day per week at a local charitable organization. \nThe theme of the 2014 Engaging Artists program is Homelessness. This summer\, the Engaging Artists residency will encourage 15 artists to deepen their understanding of socially engaged art through volunteer opportunities with one of the city’s most vulnerable populations\, the homeless. Presented by More Art\, and developed in partnership with the Artist Volunteer Center\, Judson Memorial Church\, Common Ground\, and The Bowery Mission. More Art has crafted a one-of-a-kind program that activates artists to become involved in art-making and mentoring homeless youth in New York City. The six-week residency program will be connected to their studio practice\, encouraging the production of artwork that is informed by this unique program\, which will culminate in a show of the work made during this time. Artists will be able to submit proposals for a project at the end of their residency\, and selected projects will be funded by More Art to allow the artist to continue his or her work with this population.

SUMMARY:Help Build a Citizen Bio-Swale
DESCRIPTION:From outdoorfest.org\nTHE PROJECT \nOrganic cotton clothing company Loomstate is teaming up with innovative landscaping firm\, Open Source Landscape and local environmental education and service organization\, Lower East Side Ecology Center to heal NYC’s waterways. On June 4th – 6th\, from 10:00am to 5:00 pm\, the group is going to transform a water-logged and Sandy-destroyed street tree bed into a climate change-adapted\, bio-swale rain garden. \nTHE BACKGROUND \nThe inspiration behind the project sprung from a brainstorming session with the environmental gurus at LES Ecology Center and Loomstate. They set out to solve the problem of how to prevent millions of gallons of raw sewage from being discharged into the East and Hudson rivers each year due to NYC’s antiquated combined sewage overflow system. The answer was to organize a citizen effort to build dynamic permeable surfaces called bio-swales and lead watershed tours to educate the public on the city’s water issues. Simone Frazier of Open Source Landscape and participant on the tour was inspired to help\, and led the effort to transform the 70 foot tree bed in Catherine Slip\, NYC into a beautiful water management garden. The effort has paid off and this June the group along with volunteers will be constructing a larger bio-swale with the help of funding from Hugo Barreca President of the Double R Foundation and with support from Citizens Committee. \nSIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER \nEach day will be split into two volunteer shifts\, which could include lifting\, shoveling\, planting\, and getting your hands dirty.  Between the shifts there will be an hour break for lunch. Click to register for specific days and shifts. \nWHAT TO BRING \nPlease wear sneakers or work boots and clothing that you won’t mind getting dirty. Bring work gloves if you have (extra will be provided on-site)\, apply sunscreen\, and bring any water/food you will require.  Food and drink will not be provided\, but there are bodegas nearby.
