SUMMARY:Help Build a Citizen Bio-Swale
DESCRIPTION:From outdoorfest.org\nTHE PROJECT \nOrganic cotton clothing company Loomstate is teaming up with innovative landscaping firm\, Open Source Landscape and local environmental education and service organization\, Lower East Side Ecology Center to heal NYC’s waterways. On June 4th – 6th\, from 10:00am to 5:00 pm\, the group is going to transform a water-logged and Sandy-destroyed street tree bed into a climate change-adapted\, bio-swale rain garden. \nTHE BACKGROUND \nThe inspiration behind the project sprung from a brainstorming session with the environmental gurus at LES Ecology Center and Loomstate. They set out to solve the problem of how to prevent millions of gallons of raw sewage from being discharged into the East and Hudson rivers each year due to NYC’s antiquated combined sewage overflow system. The answer was to organize a citizen effort to build dynamic permeable surfaces called bio-swales and lead watershed tours to educate the public on the city’s water issues. Simone Frazier of Open Source Landscape and participant on the tour was inspired to help\, and led the effort to transform the 70 foot tree bed in Catherine Slip\, NYC into a beautiful water management garden. The effort has paid off and this June the group along with volunteers will be constructing a larger bio-swale with the help of funding from Hugo Barreca President of the Double R Foundation and with support from Citizens Committee. \nSIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER \nEach day will be split into two volunteer shifts\, which could include lifting\, shoveling\, planting\, and getting your hands dirty.  Between the shifts there will be an hour break for lunch. Click to register for specific days and shifts. \nWHAT TO BRING \nPlease wear sneakers or work boots and clothing that you won’t mind getting dirty. Bring work gloves if you have (extra will be provided on-site)\, apply sunscreen\, and bring any water/food you will require.  Food and drink will not be provided\, but there are bodegas nearby.

SUMMARY:Protect Your Beach: Plant Beach Grass With NYC Parks
DESCRIPTION:Join NYC Parks in protecting and stabilizing new dunes in Rockaway. Dunes are essential for protection against damaging coastal storms. Beach grass helps to increase the size of dunes by trapping windblown sand and its fibrous root system strengthens dunes by keeping sand in place. \nVolunteers will plant beach grass along the crest of the dune. Please dress in warm\, comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes\, and bring a reusable water bottle and snacks. There will be no place to store personal items. \nSpace is limited and pre-registration is required. This event is rain or shine. Planting dates are subject to change. Please check the website the day of the event to confirm. \nNYC Parks and the Natural Areas Conservancy would like to thank the following partners and donors for supporting New York City’s efforts to build and stabilize dunes: Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City\, Bloomberg Philanthropies\, Fund for the City of New York\, Leon Levy Foundation\, NYC Service\, Partnerships for Parks\, and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. \nVisit the NYC Parks website for more information.

SUMMARY:Volunteer with Grow NYC - Staten Island Stop N' Swap
DESCRIPTION:Help GrowNYC create an event where people find things they need and reduce waste! At Stop ‘N’ Swaps New Yorkers bring items they no longer need and find things that are new to them. The public is invited to bring and take gently-used items\, like books\, clothes\, household goods\, and toys. You don’t need to bring something to take something.  The only things we don’t take are large items/furniture.  As a volunteer you will help receive\, sort\, and display the gently used items that people bring. You might also help keep areas neat\, take pictures\, or help promote some of the other great work OROE does!  Stop ‘N’ Swaps encourage reuse\, build community\, and reduce the waste NYC sends to landfills. By volunteering you will create an opportunity for people to bring things they no longer need instead of throwing them away\, and find things they do want without manufacturing\, packaging\, or transportation. \nClick here to learn more about this volunteer opportunity.
