SUMMARY:Climate Feedbacks: Magnitude & Uncertainty in Global Warming
DESCRIPTION:Most of the changes in climate that are projected to occur over the 21st century will not result directly from the human emission of greenhouse gases\, but from natural feedbacks within the climate system that amplify its sensitivity to these emissions. Some of these feedbacks are well constrained by theory and observations\, while others are not. This lecture outlines our understanding of the main feedback processes in the climate system and how they impact both the magnitude of future changes in Earth’s climate and the uncertainty in our predictions of these changes. \nRegistration is free and required; so don’t forget to register here!

SUMMARY:Slowing Globalization: Amsterdam\, Street Photography\, and Urban Renewal
DESCRIPTION:Global cities have been studied predominantly in terms of speed and movement\, acceleration and circulation. This talk will examine the relationship between globalization and cities in terms that run counter to such emphases\, focusing instead on slowness as a condition in contemporary urban life. In particular\, the discussion will analyze street photography and urban renewal initiatives in the city of Amsterdam in order to understand the role of “slow art” in neoliberal urbanization and city profiling. \n\nChristoph Lindner is Professor of Media and Culture and Director of the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam\, where he writes about cities\, visual culture\, and globalization. He is also a research affiliate at the University of London Institute in Paris and founding Director of the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Analysis. His books include Paris-Amsterdam Underground (Amsterdam/Chicago UP\, 2013)\, Globalization\, Violence\, and the Visual Culture of Cities (Routledge\, 2010)\, and Urban Space and Cityscapes (Routledge\, 2006).

SUMMARY:4th Annual Meatball Slapdown Fundraiser: April 4th
DESCRIPTION:          The Meatball Slapdown Returns!\nFourth Annual Fundraiser to take place at Brooklyn Brewery \nOn Thursday\, April 4th at 7pm\, Brooklynites will once again discover who’s slinging the hottest meatballs in town at the 4th Annual Meatball Slapdown.  This year\, the event is moving into more spacious digs at the Brooklyn Brewery\, doubling the number of contestants dishing out balls. \nHosted by Brooklyn Grange and The Brooklyn Kitchen\, this fundraiser supports two youth-driven educational programs: Brooklyn Kitchen’s Classrooms in the Kitchen\, which will bring 15 school groups to its kitchen labs for cooking and butchering lessons this year\, and Brooklyn Grange’s City Growers program\, which is dedicated to educating New York City’s youth about urban agriculture and the environment. \nEach year\, the meatball competition gets more and more fierce. It takes big balls to lay it all on the line for “best meatball in NYC” bragging rights!  Will Brooklyn Star\, Ivan Ramen\, Mile End\, Buttermilk Channel or Ganso take home the title this year?  Will Angelo Romano of The Pines be vindicated after an oven malfunction dashed his chances of a win back in 2011?  Will Hugue Dufour work horsemeat or foie into an entry from M Wells? \nThe winner will be determined by popular vote as well as a panel of esteemed judges including Food Network’s Amanda Freitag\, Meat Hook’s Tom Mylan and Ted Allen of Chopped.  DJ Aperitif will be spinning vinyl all night and the party is sure to get saucy! \nBrooklyn Brewery will be pouring beers all night long and Cloud Coffee will provide caffeination.  A raffle will include prizes such as signed cookbooks\, gift cards from local favorites like MilkBar and Vine Wine\, and two VIP tickets to the Great Googa Mooga.  View the most up-to-date list of competitors\, judges\, and more! \nTickets are available for pre-purchase here: $50 for unlimited balls and beers! \n*  *  *  *  * \nFor more information\, please contact: \nAnastasia Plakias\, anastasia@brooklyngrangefarm.com\, (917) 204-5644 \nAnna Klainbaum\, anna@thebrooklynkitchen.com\, (718) 389-2982 \nABOUT CLASSROOMS IN THE KITCHEN \nThe Brooklyn Kitchen has been educating home cooks since 2006\, and we know that the kitchen makes a great classroom. That’s why we open our doors to NYC Public Schools to share our passion for home cooking with children in grades 1-12.  Students are invited to spend a day learning about food sourcing from our produce manager\, the art of butchery from Meat Hook butchers\, and from-scratch cooking from our chef instructors. \nABOUT CITY GROWERS \nCity Growers is a non-profit educational organization based at Brooklyn Grange\, a one-acre rooftop farm in New York City. The organization’s mission is to coordinate and facilitate school and camp visits that engage young New Yorkers in educational tours and workshops on the farm and in the classroom. \n  \n \n  \nBig thanks to our sponsors and our partners at the Brooklyn Brewery!

SUMMARY:Book Launch- Urban Alchemy: Restoring Joy in America's Fractured Cities
DESCRIPTION:Join author Mindy Fullilove and discussants Helena Hansen and Jack Saul in celebrating the publication of Urban Alchemy: Restoring Joy in America’s Fractured Cities.\n\nWhat if divided neighborhoods were causing public health problems? What if a new approach to planning and design could tackle both the built environment and collective well-being at the same time? What if cities could help each other? In Urban Alchemy\, Dr. Mindy Fullilove uses her unique perspective as a public health psychiatrist to explore ways of healing social and spatial fractures simultaneously. Using the work of French urbanist Michel Cantal-Dupart as a guide\, Fullilove takes readers on a tour of successful collaborative interventions that repair cities and reconnect communities to make them whole. \nDr. Mindy Thompson Fullilove is Professor of Clinical Sociomedical Sciences and Professor of Clinical Psychiatry\, College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. She is a board-certified psychiatrist who is interested in the links between the environment and mental health. She started her research career in 1986 with a focus on the AIDS epidemic\, and became aware of the close link between AIDS and place of residence. Under the rubric of the psychology of place\, Dr. Fullilove began to examine the mental health effects of such environmental processes as violence\, rebuilding\, segregation\, urban renewal\, and mismanaged toxins. She has published numerous articles and four books including “Root Shock: How Tearing Up City Neighborhoods Hurts America and What We Can Do About It\,” and “House of Joshua: Meditations on Family and Place.” \nHelena Hansen is Professor of Anthropology and Psychiatry\, New York University and Jack Saul is Professor of Clinical Population and Family Health\, Mailman School of Public Health\, Columbia University and Director\, International Trauma Studies Program. \nThis event is sponsored by the Psyences Project\, Metropolitan Studies\, and the Institute for Public Knowledge.

SUMMARY:Solar One Celebrates Holi\, the Hindu Festival of Colors
DESCRIPTION:Come to Solar One to celebrate Holi\, the Hindu Festival of Colors\, on Friday March 29 from 4:30 to 7:30pm. This event is FREE and open to the public. Children and families are most welcome! \nFor those who may be unfamiliar with Holi\, it is the festival that marks the beginning of spring for thousands of the world’s Hindus. The main activity of the festival involves dressing up in white clothing and throwing colored powders at each other. Because the changes of weather in springtime are often believed to cause colds and fevers\, traditional Holi powders were made with medicinal herbs to ward off illness. For Solar One’s Holi festival\, we will be throwing colored powders\, but they will be made with food coloring and rice flour so as to be as benign as possible. \nHoli originated in ancient Bengal as part of the veneration and worship of Lord Vishnu\, the preserver diety of Hindu mythology. Holi is also closely associated with Vishnu’s avatar Krishna\, who played holi games with the cow-herding girls (gopis) who were his companions during his childhood. \n \nGot some more questions? Check out our Holi FAQs here! \nWant to help us make our non-toxic\, gluten-free Holi powder? Join us at 5:00pm on Monday March 25 at the Solar 1 building (map and directions can be found here). \nWe hope you’ll join us on Friday March 29\, the first full moon of spring!
