SUMMARY:Protecting the City\, Before Next Time
DESCRIPTION:The conversation around Hurricane Sandy has shifted from rectifying the storm’s aftermath to the city’s future in disaster preparedness. City leaders have proposed several changes to infrastructure that could dramatically alter our cityscapes: building a barrier to block the city from water surges; using eminent domain to declare no-build zones; creating wetlands to absorb the water; making drastic changes to zoning; and making major changes to building codes. The common theme is that the cities cannot just be re-built—they have to be re-built differently. \nOn May 20th\, the Community Advisory Board (CAB) of New York Public Radio offers the public an opportunity to learn about and discuss the scope\, ramifications\, and costs of these proposed changes. SUMMARY:SS General Slocum Disaster Tour
DESCRIPTION:On June 15\, 1904\, General Slocum\, an excursion boat\, caught fire in the East River. The blaze resulted in the deaths of over 1000 passengers\, mostly women and children\, making it New York City’s worst disaster until the 9/11 attacks of 2001.  \nAlmost all of the passengers lived in a German-American enclave in the East Village known as Kleindeutchland. The grief-stricken neighborhood never recovered from the tragedy\, and many survivors resettled to Yorkville\, a growing new German-American community on the Upper East Side. \nOn May 18\, join NYC H2O as they sail aboard the historic tugboat Pegasus\, retracing and recounting the ill fated last voyage of General Slocum. DESCRIPTION:Successfully addressing the challenge of a changing climate is critical for maintaining conditions that are ripe for overall economic sustainability\, political stability\, and growth. Asia is the most disaster prone region in the world\, a fact that places already strained institutions under additional pressure. Simultaneously\, the U.S. faces the prospect of increasingly violent natural disasters\, and in regions where such disasters were previously uncommon.  What lessons can Asia provide for the U.S.\, and what lessons can the U.S. provide for Asia in addressing climate-related issues?  Please join a distinguished panel of experts to discuss climate resiliency\, particularly as it links to water resources\, desertification\, increasing mobility\, displacement\, and ultimately security. \nJohn Briscoe is Gordon McKay Professor of the Practice of Environmental Engineering and Environmental Health at Harvard University\, where he directs the Harvard Water Security Initiative. \nAmanda Ikert is the C40 Initiative Director on Climate Change Adaptation. She was previously the C40 City Director in Jakarta. \nMichael Werz is a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress\, where his work as member of the National Security Team focuses on the nexus of climate change\, migration\, and security and emerging democracies\, especially Turkey\, Mexico\, and Brazil. DESCRIPTION:The Urbanization Project at NYU Stern presents the “Brown Bag Discussion Series.” \nThis week’s discussion is titled The Henry George Theorem with Uncertainty and Lump Infrastructure\, featuring Paul Romer\, of the NYU Stern Economics and Urbanization Project. \nPaul Romer is Professor of Economics at New York University’s Stern School of Business and Director of its Urbanization Project. The Urbanization Project addresses a truly historic challenge and opportunity: welcoming an additional 3 – 5 billion people to urban life in less than a century. The Project’s first initiative helps existing cities plan for expansion. Its second initiative fosters the creation of entirely new cities because history shows that a new city offers a uniquely important opportunity to implement systemic social reform and speed up progress. \nPrior to joining Stern\, Romer taught at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business\, where he took an entrepreneurial detour to start Aplia\, an education technology company dedicated to increasing student effort and engagement. Romer is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. DESCRIPTION:Triple Canopy is pleased to announce Speculations (“The future is ______”)\, fifty days of lectures\, discussions\, and debates about the future\, as part of EXPO 1: New York at MoMA PS1. Speculations will take place from May 12 to July 28\, in a structure created by artist José León Cerrillo and in an installation designed by artist Adrián Villar Rojas. \nWe know all the ways the world will end. And yet\, we continue. Our action in the present implies an optimism about the future\, even if that optimism is skeptical\, worried\, or dark. For Speculations (“The future is ______”)\, Triple Canopy is inviting writers\, artists\, scientists\, activists\, economists\, and technologists to bet on futures they want to see realized and to describe them as clearly as possible\, while considering what demands these futures make on the present. The speculations will take the form of daily lectures and debates in Villar Rojas’s installation and discussions within the structure created by Cerrillo. \nAll Speculations participants will be filling out a standard questionnaire about their future and its demands on the present\, for eventual publication. Five project creators\, including the founders of the LowLine\, +Pool\, New Lab\, NYFi and the Hudson River Powerhouse\, will be given a platform to pitch their ideas to a jury of experts as well as you\, their fellow urban enthusiasts. \nA winner will be chosen.  The audience is the judge.  You can help shape the future of New York. \nThis high-energy pitch session will take place on May 3\, 2013 at 7:00 PM in the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral on the corner of Prince and Mott Streets\, Manhattan.  This event is free\, but registration is required. RSVP by May 1st.
