SUMMARY:LDEO Spring Public Lecture Series: Ocean Acidification and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Photo: New York Times\nThe Earth Institute’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) Spring Public Lectures presents\, “Ocean acidification and climate change\,” with  Brbel Hnisch\, Associate Professor\, Earth and Environmental Sciences\, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.  \nHumans are changing global climate at a pace unprecedented in Earths history\, but past climate trends can help us to understand where our current climate is headed. While we cannot make direct measurements of past atmosphere\, we can use marine records preserved in the ancient plankton found on the sea floor. Lamont-Doherty scientists have been gathering ancient sea cores for over 50 years\, producing a story of climate change and its affects. Professor Brbel Hnisch will discuss how we can use geological records to fine-tune our predictions for future global climate change. Register here.

SUMMARY:Arubas Vision for Creating Sustainable Prosperity
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Green Arub\nThe Earth Institute is presents Arubas Vision for Creating Sustainable Prosperity with Michiel Godfried Mike Eman\, Prime Minister of Aruba. \nThe Government of Aruba is implementing a broad strategy for creating sustainable prosperity that includes moving to renewable energy\, developing a sustainable economy and creating the conditions for stronger communities. The Government is working to transition Aruba completely off fossil fuels by 2020. With the establishment of a Renewable Energy Research and Education Institute\, and partnership with The Carbon War Room\, Aruba plans to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and rely on alternative sources of energy\, such as wind\, solar and wave. On all levels of Aruban society\, sustainable initiatives have been taken up to involve the whole population in this project and to become the first fully sustainable island on earth. \nMixing independent policy making and strategic international partnerships\, the small island nation of Aruba is poised to become a leader in social and technological development in the Caribbean. The Prime Minister will discuss Arubas strategy to move ahead with this ambitious goal of pursuing sustainable growth. He will expand on the governments pursuit of public-private partnerships to improve the islands infrastructure\, education\, and health care\, and will discuss Arubas potential as a center of green energy innovation. \nRSVP required. SUMMARY:Activist: Agonistics: Thinking the World Politically (Chantal Mouffe)
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nIn this lecture\, renowned political philosopher Chantal Mouffe continues her exploration of agonistics and discusses different models of radical politics. Engaging with the work of Michael Hardt\, Antonio Negri and Paulo Virno and examining the signification of the recent protest movements like Occupy\, Mouffe highlights the value of political conflict—from the construction of public spaces where dissenting “points of view are confronted without any possibility of a final reconciliation” to the role of artists as organic intellectuals today—in reshaping the institutions of liberal democracy. SUMMARY:Volunteer with Grow NYC - Staten Island Stop N' Swap
DESCRIPTION:Help GrowNYC create an event where people find things they need and reduce waste! At Stop ‘N’ Swaps New Yorkers bring items they no longer need and find things that are new to them. The public is invited to bring and take gently-used items\, like books\, clothes\, household goods\, and toys. You don’t need to bring something to take something.  The only things we don’t take are large items/furniture.  As a volunteer you will help receive\, sort\, and display the gently used items that people bring. You might also help keep areas neat\, take pictures\, or help promote some of the other great work OROE does!  Stop ‘N’ Swaps encourage reuse\, build community\, and reduce the waste NYC sends to landfills. By volunteering you will create an opportunity for people to bring things they no longer need instead of throwing them away\, and find things they do want without manufacturing\, packaging\, or transportation. \nClick here to learn more about this volunteer opportunity.

SUMMARY:Has the Brooklyn Waterfront Gone Global - Again?
DESCRIPTION:(Photo Credit: MVVA)\nThe Brooklyn Waterfront Research Center presents a half-day symposium investigating the global reach of the recent changes along the Brooklyn waterfront.  In the past the Brooklyn waterfront has played an important role on the global stage. In the early 19th century it was a processing destination for raw commodities such as sugar\, coffee\, and tobacco with complicity in the global slave trade. In the early 20th century\, it became an industrial center for manufacturing\, warehousing and export distribution. Then\, in the 1960s\, it suffered a huge decline in jobs\, economic vitality\, and global reach. Today there has been rejuvenation but the commerce that has returned to the waterfront is different yet again. Are these new jobs once again placing Brooklyn on the global stage? How?  In what ways is the Brooklyn waterfront having a global reach?  How is that global reach similar and different from what it once was? \nFor an updated list of speakers and panelists\, check out the BWRC website.  Click here to register for this event. \nHosted by the BWRC and UTRC. \nRegistration is free but donations are accepted above and will be matched by a sponsoring grant.\nContinental breakfast will be provided.
