SUMMARY:FitCity 9: Promoting Physical Activity through Design
DESCRIPTION:AIA New York\, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene\, is holding the eighth-annual FitCity 8 conference at the Center for Architecture on Monday\, June 24\, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (and via a livestream available here). \nSpeakers and participants will examine how design of the built environment can create opportunities for increasing physical activity and access to healthier food and beverages. The program brings together architects\, planners\, designers\, landscape architects\, developers\, and public health professionals to discuss how design\, policy\, and practice decisions can address the key health epidemics of our time: obesity and related chronic diseases such as diabetes\, heart disease\, cancers and asthma. \nConference participants will also hear how the strategies included in the Active Design Guidelines\, released in January 2010\, are being implemented at New York City agencies\, in the private sector\, and in communities across the world. \nRegistration opens at 8:00 AM; the program begins at 8:30 AM. \nDownload the Active Design Guidelines: http://www.nyc.gov/adg \nClick here to learn more about this event!

SUMMARY:CORPORATE POWER GRAB: Can Democracy Survive?
DESCRIPTION:Join Trade Justice NY Metro to Learn More And Help Pass A NYC Resolution Against Fast Track.  Global trade agreements that are “Fast Tracked” through Congress\, which is what supporters intend for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)\, harm us in ways we don’t know about until it is too late. Like NAFTA\, the TPP will outsource jobs\, hurt our environment\, threaten food safety and access to medicines\, limit internet freedom and roll back recent Wall St. regulations. The “investor-state” provision will also severely limit the rights of participating countries\, including the US\, to pass their own laws and reforms in these and other areas. If we do\, we could be sued by large corporations for damaging their “future expected profits.” \nMODERATOR: Ron Kuby\, Co-host of ABC Radio’s “Curtis and Kuby”\nKEYNOTE: Honorable Helena Rosenthal\, NYC Council Member\, 6th District\, Manhattan\nSPEAKERS:\n• Kian Frederick\, Nat’l Field Director\, Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch\n• Mitch Jones\, Director Common Resources Program\, Food & Water Watch\n• Jennifer Flynn\, Director\, Health Global Access Project\n• José Schiffino\, Working Families Party and Chair\, Fair Trade Committee NYC\, Labor Council for Latin American Advancement\n• Reverend Stephen Phelps\, former Senior Interim Minister\, Riverside Church\n• Malú Huacuja del Toro\, Author

SUMMARY:LDEO Spring Public Lecture Series: Air\, Water and Stone - Lowering CO2 through Sequestration
DESCRIPTION:Photo: How Stuff Works\nThe Earth Institute’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) annual Public Lecture Series presents “Air\, Water and Stone: Lowering CO2 through Sequestration\,” with David Goldberg\, Lamont Research Professor\, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory\, The Earth Institute\, Columbia University. \nOne of the best options for slowing atmospheric CO2 release is carbon capture and sequestration. Considering a global CO2 management approach such as this will require considerable investment and commitment to scientific research\, engineering development\, and new regulatory policy. Join us as Lamont Research Professor David Goldberg explains an option for the secure capture of CO2 in vast geological repositories that could mitigate carbon release to the environment for many centuries\, well away from material and human risks.

SUMMARY:The Law of the Land: Our Conflicted Tussle Over Nature
DESCRIPTION:Every great advancement in environmental protection in the United States has not been without a struggle. Often the struggle is less about the need for preservation\, but how best to move forward.  The struggle is complicated by the emergence of competing narratives each tied to a set of closely held values and beliefs.  To enter into the fray without understanding the roots of these beliefs is to proceed at ones peril.  But what are these underlying values\, and how can we enter into discussions with one another and seek common ground without sacrificing our highest ideals?   \nThese issues will be explored with the NY Society for Ethical Culture panel\, including Clare Donohue\, Founding Member of the Sane Energy Project\, and Lisa DiCaprio\, Energy Committee of the Sierra Club\, Atlantic Chapter.

SUMMARY:Protect Your Beach: Plant Beach Grass With NYC Parks
DESCRIPTION:Join NYC Parks in protecting and stabilizing new dunes in Rockaway. Dunes are essential for protection against damaging coastal storms. Beach grass helps to increase the size of dunes by trapping windblown sand and its fibrous root system strengthens dunes by keeping sand in place. \nVolunteers will plant beach grass along the crest of the dune. Please dress in warm\, comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes\, and bring a reusable water bottle and snacks. There will be no place to store personal items. \nSpace is limited and pre-registration is required. This event is rain or shine. Planting dates are subject to change. Please check the website the day of the event to confirm. \nNYC Parks and the Natural Areas Conservancy would like to thank the following partners and donors for supporting New York City’s efforts to build and stabilize dunes: Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City\, Bloomberg Philanthropies\, Fund for the City of New York\, Leon Levy Foundation\, NYC Service\, Partnerships for Parks\, and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. \nVisit the NYC Parks website for more information.
