SUMMARY:Slow Food NYC Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:From thelibertynyc.com\nIt’s the Slow Food NYC monthly Happy Hour! It’s fun\, social\, and informal. But it’s also your opportunity to talk to the leadership of Slow Food NYC and let them know what you think. Got a great idea for an event? Looking for ways to get involved? Want to learn more about Slow Food? Just looking to have a relaxing drink with other “Slow” minded people? This is your opportunity — free and open to everyone. \nThe Liberty\, a spacious watering hole that boasts soaring 18-foot ceilings and a long black granite bar\, was inspired by two iconic New York spaces: the lobby of Rockerfeller Centre and the now defunct Cloud Club at the Chrysler Building. Elegant yet casual\, the bar features a full food menu\, from Long Island oysters to grass-fed beef sliders to fig & prosciutto pizza. The New York-inspired cocktail list stars libations based on each borough\, including The Billyburg (using both Brooklyn Lager and local gin) and The Bronx Fall Classic\, with vodka\, apples\, and cinnamon syrup.

The international outdoor and performance art festival is curated by David C. Terry and Esther Neff. \nLUMEN Festival 2014 is FREE and open to the public. A suggested donation of $5 collected at the door helps cover event costs. Purchase Special Access Passes NOW to Support LUMEN + receive beverage + food perks!

SUMMARY:The Architectural League of New York 133rd Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Marc Lins\, courtesy of Selldorf Architects. From nycedc.com\nThe Architectural League of New York’s 133rd Annual Meeting will feature tours of Sims Municipal Recycling\, Sunset Park Material Recovery Facility. \nAccording to the Architectural League: \n“Designed by Selldorf Architects\, the recently opened Sims Municipal Recycling\, Sunset Park Material Recovery Facility is a processing center for New York’s curbside metal\, glass\, and plastic recyclables.  Located on an 11-acre waterfront pier\, the structure is for and about recycling and reuse. \nDesigned to give character to what otherwise might be read as bland big box construction\, the pre-engineered structure was articulated by inverting structural elements to appear on the exterior\, emphasizing the visual impact of the steel girders and lateral bracing. The 140\,000 sf facility includes discrete areas for receiving recyclables by truck and barge\, sorting and processing\, storage\, and a public education center with display and learning spaces linked to the facility by a connecting bridge to a viewing platform. Recycled materials are incorporated throughout the complex\, from structural steel to site fill made from a composite of glass\, asphalt\, and rock reclaimed from the Second Avenue subway excavation. Other sustainable measures include one of the largest applications of photovoltaics in New York City\, bioswales for stormwater management\, and a soon to be installed wind turbine\, which is projected to generate 15% of the facility’s power. \nVisit Urban Omnibus for an interview with Outerbridge at the new facility where he discusses Sims’ work to expand recycling in the city through new infrastructure and public education\, the markets for post-processed recycled material\, the potential of large-scale composting\, and the challenges and future of reducing waste in New York City.” \nThe Annual Meeting is free and open only to League members\, who may bring up to one non-member guest. To become a member and attend this event\, join here.

Admission is free. \nThe exhibition will also be open on the evenings of lectures given by the Prize winners\, on June 24 and June 26. SUMMARY:Scarecrow: Largest Installation in Socrates’ History
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: http://socratessculpturepark.org/\nScarecrow is a new site-specific installation by artist Žilvinas Kempinas and the largest installation in Socrates’ 28-year history. Minimal and magical\, the sculpture is a 250-foot-long\, thirteen-foot-high kinetic pathway composed of 200 stainless steel\, mirrored poles connecting energetic slopes of silver Mylar ribbon overhead. With two simple elements – poles and tape –Scarecrow activates the invisible forces of nature. \nScarecrow reflects its surrounding environment and thus continuously changes throughout the exhibition. The perpetual motion of the ribbon\, as it responds to the wind of its environment\, echoes the natural flowing of the nearby East River\, while the mirrored material reflects momentary shifts of light and sky like a shimmering horizon along the waterfront. \nBlanketing a large portion of the 4.7 acre park\, Scarecrow is Kempinas’ first major outdoor installation in the United States. Kempinas is internationally acclaimed for his kinetic installations and controlled\, minimalist works; notably\, the artist represented Lithuania at the 2009 Venice Biennale with a site-specific installation entitled Tube\, and more recently Double Oat the Museum of Modern Art\, New York (2010)\, and Slow Motion at Museum Tinguely\, Switzerland (2013). Kempinas recently created his first outdoor sculpture for the Echigo Tsumari Art Field In Japan (2012)\, which was subsequently shown as part of his solo exhibition at Museum Tinguely. That work\, made from Japanese snow-measuring posts and bird-repellant ribbons\, was titled Kakashi – or “Scarecrow” in Japanese. At Socrates Sculpture Park\, the artist’s latest Scarecrow expands on Kakashi in scale\, shape\, and setting. \nUnlike his large-scale installations in museums\, galleries\, and biennials\, where the artist carefully calculates and manipulates artificial elements to create a desired effect\, Kempinas’s outdoor sculptures are experimental and adapt to fluctuating weather conditions. While this fluidity creates endless possibilities for effect\, the artist maintains a meticulousness in his process\, establishing a series of set conditions upon which nature can play. From a distanceScarecrow appears as a monumental single sculpture that is at once impressively precise and brutally horizontal. As you move closer to the installation\, however\, Scarecrow becomes enlivened with motion and sound as it captures the wind and pulls the surrounding landscape into itself. \nScarecrow is made possible\, in part\, by generous gifts from the Lewben Art Foundation and Martin Z. Margulies. The 2014 Exhibition Program at Socrates Sculpture Park is made possible by major support from the following: Bloomberg Philanthropies\, Charina Endowment Fund\, Cowles Charitable Trust\, Mark di Suvero\, the Sidney E. Frank Foundation\, the Maxine and Stuart Frankel Foundation\, Agnes Gund\, Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts\, Lambent Foundation\, Ivana Mestrovic\, Plant Specialists\, Shelley and Donald Rubin\, and the Thomas W. Smith Foundation. 2014 Exhibitions are also supported\, in part\, by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts\, a state agency\, and by public funds from the City of New York Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. \nThe exhibition continues until August 3rd.

SUMMARY:In A World of Their Own: Coney Island Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Photo credit: Aaron Rose\nWhen Aaron Rose began photographing Coney Island in 1961\, he bypassed the bluster of the theme parks and sideshows for the more intimate interactions of beach dwellers. Wielding his camera surreptitiously\, observing as if from a neighboring blanket\, Rose documented a “sun-baked melting pot” of beachgoers of all ages\, ethnicities\, and walks of life\, each one utterly unselfconscious\, absorbed in a world of his or her own. \nOne of the earliest art photographers to use C-print paper and chromogenic processing\, Rose made images with rosy tans and cool whites that were inspired by the summer skin tones he saw around him. The 70 images on display in this exhibition capture a palpable sense of the manners and mores of 1960s New Yorkers at their most unguarded; as photography critic Vince Aletti noted\, “the work’s easy rapport and its casual erotic charge are thrilling and touchingly sweet.” Aaron Rose’s Coney Island is “a place where privacy is a state of mind.” \nAdmission to the Museum of the City of New York includes all exhibitions currently on view. The Museum is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm. The exhibition continues until Aug 3rd.
