Teaching the challenges\nof timely decarbonization\, Energetic is taught at 46\ncolleges and universities in the US and around the world\n(including Vassar\, Bard\, and SUNY)\, as well as in dozens\nof US high schools. A nonpartisan teaching tool\, it’s used\nby professors at Vanderbilt (TN) and Wofford College\n(SC). Energetic has been presented at AGU24\n(Washington DC) and EGU25 (Vienna)\, two major climate\nscience conferences. DESCRIPTION:Thursday March 12\, 2026 1:30pm – 2:45pmPDT\n1103\n\n\n\n \n\n\nEnergy literacy is essential to build public support for a rapid transition to zero carbon power. Rebuilding the power system in the US is a two-decade plus project from the time it begins in earnest\, and a rapid transition can only start with shared knowledge in classrooms and in public events. We’ve built a scalable tool\, an easily distributed cooperative game pegged to location specific data\, to teach students about the massive changes needed in how we produce and use energy.Our collaborative game\, ENERGETIC\, has expanded to classes in 20 public high schools in NYC\, to a dozen private schools including the Nueva School\, and to 30 universities around the world\, including Carnegie Mellon\, Columbia\, Vanderbilt\, University College Dublin\, and IIT Madras. The game has been featured in The New York Times\, and was presented at AGU24\, the principal conference for climate researchers. With this method\, players of all ages can learn how to decarbonize New York with accurate\, updatable real world information\, scaling from a 2.5 hr game to a month long series of workshops. We’re exploring the replication of the game format to other cities and regions\, and have discussions underway with SMUD\, the public utility for Sacramento.

DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition Capturing Change: Freshkills Park\, now on view at The Architectural League\, Urban Omnibus will host a panel discussion exploring the design process\, evolution\, and current state of Freshkills Park. The world’s largest landfill-to-park project is scheduled to open\, in phases\, through 2036. \nThe public has limited access to a site that will eventually become one of New York City’s largest urban parks. The panelists—a landscape architect\, a scientist\, and a writer—have been closely engaging with the site as the park’s master plan is implemented. What do their experiences reveal about this distinctive urban ecosystem? The panelists will share their different perspectives on the park’s progress\, reflecting on its design process\, research initiatives\, and programming. \nPanelists: \nDani Alexander is a writer and landscape architect. She is the founding principal of Studio AKA\, a landscape architecture and research practice based in Washington D.C. and winner of the Urban Wild Writer Residency. \nTatiana Choulika is a landscape architect and principal at James Corner Field Operations\, where she is managing the planning\, design\, and implementation of Freshkills Park. \nDr. Cait Field is the manager for science and research development at NYC Parks: Freshkills Park\, where she guides current research occurring in the fields of restoration ecology\, land management\, biodiversity monitoring\, as well as social science initiatives. \nThe discussion will be moderated by Mariana Mogilevich\, editor in chief of Urban Omnibus\, The Architectural League’s online publication dedicated to observing\, understanding\, and shaping the city.

DESCRIPTION:The Environmental Sciences and Humanities Research Cluster at the Center for Science and Society invites you to “Food\, Farming\, and Sustainability.” With approximately 815 million people around the world currently undernourished and the global population expected to grow by 2 billion by 2050\, two of the most pressing issues that humanity will face over the next 30 years is 1) the trend towards global hunger and 2) our ability to create innovative and equitable solutions to feeding the global population.
