SUMMARY:Slowing Globalization: Amsterdam\, Street Photography\, and Urban Renewal
DESCRIPTION:Global cities have been studied predominantly in terms of speed and movement\, acceleration and circulation. This talk will examine the relationship between globalization and cities in terms that run counter to such emphases\, focusing instead on slowness as a condition in contemporary urban life. In particular\, the discussion will analyze street photography and urban renewal initiatives in the city of Amsterdam in order to understand the role of “slow art” in neoliberal urbanization and city profiling. \n\nChristoph Lindner is Professor of Media and Culture and Director of the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam\, where he writes about cities\, visual culture\, and globalization. He is also a research affiliate at the University of London Institute in Paris and founding Director of the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Analysis. His books include Paris-Amsterdam Underground (Amsterdam/Chicago UP\, 2013)\, Globalization\, Violence\, and the Visual Culture of Cities (Routledge\, 2010)\, and Urban Space and Cityscapes (Routledge\, 2006).

DESCRIPTION:The Urbanization Project at NYU Stern presents the “Brown Bag Discussion Series.” \nThis week’s discussion is titled Evidence Based Urban Policing featuring Dennis C. Smith of the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. \nDennis C. Smith earned his Ph.D. in political science from Indiana University. In January\, 2006\, he was also appointed Professor in Residence in the New York State Assembly Internship Program. He teaches policy formation and program evaluation\, Performance Management\,. Comparative Federalism\, and the International Capstone. Professor Smith has conducted research on the performance management of public and nonprofit agencies\, and has written on the problems of measuring the success of reforms in public sector organizations. He has also studied the non-emergency use of New York City’s ambulance service (EMS) and has written on strategies for managing the demand for emergency services. Professor Smith’s work has been published in several journals\, including Public Administration Review\, Urban Affairs Quarterly\, Public Administration and Development\, and City Journal. His analysis of Compstat\, written with former NYPD Commissioner William Bratton\, appeared in Forsythe\, ed.\, Quicker\, Better\, Cheaper? Managing Performance in American Government (2001). His “Managing CIVPOL:The Potential of Performance Management in International Public Service” is a chapter in Dijkzeul and Beigbeder\, ed.\, Rethinking International Organizations: Pathology and Promise (2003). \nHe directed the Program in Public Administration for nine years and served two years as Associate Dean. From 1997-2002 he led the Wagner School’s International Initiative where he designed the new Executive MPA of International Public Service and led the School’s State Department funded partnerships with the Ukrainian Academy of Public Administration and Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique. \nSince 1985\, Professor Smith has worked with the public management faculty of Escuela Superior de Administracion y Direccion de Empresas (ESADE) on management development projects in Spain. He has directed Policy Analysis in Europe\, co-sponsored by Ecol� National�des travaux Publics de l’Etat and Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). He worked with the Graduate School of International Studies at Korea University and Seoul National University’s Graduate School of Public Administration. \nHe is a member of the editorial board of two public policy journals and of the board of the nonprofit\, children’s musical theater company\, TADA!. \nAll Brown Bag Discussions are held at NYU’s Kaufman Management Center in room 7-191.

DESCRIPTION:The Urbanization Project at NYU Stern presents the “Brown Bag Discussion Series.” \nThis week’s discussion is titled Some Issues About Urbanization in Africa\, featuring Robert Buckley\, of the New School Graduate Program in International Affairs. \nRobert Buckley is a Senior Fellow in the Graduate Program in International Affairs at the New School. Previously he was is an Advisor and Managing Director at the Rockefeller Foundation\, and Lead Economist at the World Bank.  His work at both the Foundation and the Bank focused largely on issues relating to urbanization in developing countries. He is particularly interested in the policy issues related to slum formation and approaches to dealing with them. A good part of his past work has involved helping to prepare projects and grants related to these concerns. He has worked in more than 50 developing countries and has written widely on urbanization\, housing\, and development issues in the popular press such as The Financial Times\, The New York Times and The Washington Post\,  and in academic journals such as The Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics\, Nature\, The Journal of Money\, Credit and Banking\, and Economic Development and Cultural Change. His most recent book\, which he co-edited with Michael Spence and Patricia Annez is Urbanization and Economic Growth. He has also taught at a number of other universities — Syracuse\, Johns Hopkins\, and the University of Pennsylvania – and served as the Chief Economist of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Finally\, he has also been a Fulbright Scholar\, awarded a Regent’s Fellowship at the University of California\, and been supported by the Marshall Fund\, the Gates Foundation\, and the National Science Foundation. \nAll Brown Bag Discussions are held at NYU’s Kaufman Management Center in room 7-191. \n

Eddie and his ride are driven away when the City of New York and an opportunistic real estate mogul lock horns over the future of the “People’s Playground.” A film about greed\, politics\, land use and public policy\, and the battle over an American cultural icon\, Zipper captures a market-driven world where growth often trumps preservation\, and the Zipper may be only the beginning of what is lost. zipperfilm.com\nPHOTOGRAPHY SLIDESHOW\nBruce Handy:\nBruce\, aka Pablo Jones\, aka Jonesy Boy\, is a street photographer\, ninja photographer\, mermaid grokologist  and co-founder of the People’s Playground Paparazzi.  He is married to Vika and spends his free time taking photos of the dual centers of the universe\, Coney Island and Times Square.  He strives to capture characters showing natural emotions.  Jonesy takes this remaining space to thank the Save Coney Island organization and their supporters.  “May you all have sand in your shoes\, forever.” \nDoug Ross: \nDoug is an accomplished commercial photographer with over twenty-five years of professional experience.  His personal work in capturing the people\, performers and places of Coney Island are his passion and ongoing life’s work.  The area is rich in history\, architecture and its residence are the fabric that hold together her boardwalk\, amusements\, water and sand.  Although Doug grew up on Long Island his desire to photograph Coney Island came from his dad’s strong relation with the area.  All of Doug’s Coney Island work is dedicated to his father’s memory. \nDaniel Turkewitz: \nDaniel is an award winning screenwriter and filmmaker who also works with stills.  He’s worked professionally as a set photographer for several films and also film festivals including the Big Apple Film Festival.  His one minute short on the 9/11 memorial lights was featured on NPR.com and Wired.com. \nRobert Bailey & Robbie Bailey:\nRobert and Robbie Bailey are New York based photographers that specialize in environmental portraiture.  Robert received his BFA in Photography from Ohio University.  Robbie studied at the International Center of Photography.  They are both proud members of the Coney Island Polar Bears club. \nKevin Downs:\nKevin is a Fine Art & Documentary photographer and teacher who works to tell the stories of people who are facing life’s joys and struggles in New York City and in the world. \nCharles Denson:\nCharles is a Coney Island native\, director of the Coney Island History Project\, award winning filmmaker and author of Coney Island: Lost and Found. \nAlicia Degener: \nAlicia is a Brooklyn based artist primarily working in pastel while portraying the urban landscape of New York and particularly\, Coney Island.  She has embarked upon an exploration of the inner city by depicting the barriers set before us in our everyday lives often with an ironic sense of humor.  A skewed sense of perspective and bold color often utilizing text are focal points of Alicia’s distinctive artwork.  For the past two years her paintings have been featured as official promo-posters for the Siren Screen Series. \nLIVE READINGS\nMichael Schwartz:\nLeave all your loose valuables in the lobby\, because Coney Island native Michael Schwartz is about to take you for a harrowing ride in the front car on The Cyclone\, as he performs his beloved humorous short story “Hey Gerry!” about a boy’s coming of age in 1970s Coney Island.  “Hey Gerry!” has been performed in venues across the city\, and will be published in May in the anthology book\, Have A NYC 2: New York Short Stories.\n\nRichard Eagan:\nArtist and performer Richard Eagan\, a founder of the Coney Island Hysterical Society\, reads excerpts from his solo show “Alive on the Inside\,” an account of his years working in Coney Island.  Returning as an artist to the beachfront paradise of his childhood becomes a surreal odyssey of discovery of what lies beneath the surface of memory.
