SUMMARY:NYC Wildflower Week: May 11-19th
DESCRIPTION:NYC Wildflower Week presents a full week of free events to showcase the 53\,000 acres of open space and 778 native plants in NYC’s 5 boroughs. The goal of the week is simple: to encourage New Yorkers to get to know the nature in their own back yard and to inspire them to protect this natural heritage for future generations. In 2012 we are expanding on this model by launching National Urban Biodiversity Week with partners in cities across the country. Check out Nature Block Party to learn more! \nOver 30 events will be held across all five boroughs! Check here for the event listings (coming soon). Learn more about NYC Wildflower Week and the importance of wildflowers everywhere here.

SUMMARY:counter/point: The 2013 D-Crit Conference
DESCRIPTION:counter/point: The 2013 D-Crit Conference\, moderated by NPR’s “The Takeaway” host John Hockenberry\, and featuring graduating students of the SVA MFA in Design Criticism\, will take place on Saturday\, May 11\, 2013 at the SVA Theatre in New York City. \nPaola Antonelli\, senior curator of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art\, will deliver the keynote lecture\, launching an afternoon of rich\, polyphonic exchange between the D-Crit Class of 2013 and a headlining roster of design curators\, practitioners\, theorists\, critics\, educators\, and planners. D-Crit students will be presenting their thesis research in counterpoint with: Walker Arts Center curator of Architecture and Design Andrew Blauvelt; British interaction design firm Dunne & Raby co-founder Fiona Raby; architect and theorist Mark Foster Gage; director of the J. Max Bond Center on Design for the Just City Toni Griffin; and architect and activist Michael Sorkin. \nTopics to be addressed include: the persistence of segregation in today’s built environment; the problems inherent in exhibiting graphic design; the spectacular framing of nature in the urban environment; product design’s social and participatory dimension; and how some emerging architects are using literal representation in new ways. \nThis will be the fourth D-Crit conference organized by\, and featuring\, graduating D-Crit students. Join us for a fast-paced afternoon of heady ideas and practical insight about the subjects and strategies giving shape to design criticism today\, and help us to celebrate a new generation of design critics\, editors\, journalists\, authors\, curators\, researchers\, and educators. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, so sign up today to save your seat.

SUMMARY:MoMA PS1 and Triple Canopy launch 50 days of speculation about the future\, May 12- July 28th
DESCRIPTION:Triple Canopy is pleased to announce Speculations (“The future is ______”)\, fifty days of lectures\, discussions\, and debates about the future\, as part of EXPO 1: New York at MoMA PS1. Speculations will take place from May 12 to July 28\, in a structure created by artist José León Cerrillo and in an installation designed by artist Adrián Villar Rojas. \nWe know all the ways the world will end. And yet\, we continue. Our action in the present implies an optimism about the future\, even if that optimism is skeptical\, worried\, or dark. For Speculations (“The future is ______”)\, Triple Canopy is inviting writers\, artists\, scientists\, activists\, economists\, and technologists to bet on futures they want to see realized and to describe them as clearly as possible\, while considering what demands these futures make on the present. The speculations will take the form of daily lectures and debates in Villar Rojas’s installation and discussions within the structure created by Cerrillo. \nAll Speculations participants will be filling out a standard questionnaire about their future and its demands on the present\, for eventual publication. The public is also invited to speculate on the future and reconsider the present by answering the questionnaire\, which will be available all summer at MoMA PS1. \nParticipants include Laurie Anderson\, Arjun Appadurai\, Jacob Appelbaum\, David Auerbach\, Ray Brassier\, Ted Chiang\, Jace Clayton\, Adam Cohen\, John Crowley\, Ruth DeFries\, Samuel Delany\, Silvia Federici\, Peter Frase\, Rivka Galchen\, Alex Gourevitch\, David Graeber\, Group Theory\, N. Katherine Hayles\, Myung Mi Kim\, Katie Kitamura\, Josh Kline\, Benjamin Kunkel\, Ajay Kurian\, Rachel Kushner\, Lynn Hershman Leeson\, Marie Lorenz\, Danny Marcus\, Mary Mattingly\, Joseph McElroy\, Maureen McHugh\, Yates McKee\, Mileece\, John Miller\, Naeem Mohaiemen\, Evgeny Morozov\, Ted Nelson\, Trevor Paglen\, Ashwin Parameswaran\, Laura Poitras\, Fatima Al Qadiri\, Srikanth Reddy\, Ben Rivers\, Kim Stanley Robinson\, Carne Ross\, Norman Rush\, Saskia Sassen\, Astra Taylor\, Mierle Laderman Ukeles\, Ellen Ullman\, Kathi Weeks\, and Ben Wizner. The full schedule will be announced soon. \nCall for Applications\nSpeculations (“The future is ______”) is a school of sorts\, and its success depends on regular attendance by a dedicated student body\, who will develop their own speculations about the future over the course of a summer’s worth of discussions. Triple Canopy is looking to enlist a group of fifteen to twenty-five students who can prepare for and attend classes on weekends and Monday\, Thursday\, and Friday afternoons. You are invited to apply by completing our questionnaire about your speculative future. Applications are due May 5. Students will be given free admission to MoMA PS1 every day Speculations is in session\, and the opportunity to revise their questionnaires for inclusion in a book compiling the summer’s speculations. Please email speculations@canopycanopycanopy.com with any questions. \nFormat\nMondays\, Thursdays (except July 4)\, and Fridays\nOne speaker will give a two-part presentation\, each part an hour long. The first part\, a seminar\, taking place at 2 p.m.\, will be a discussion of a historical speculation on the future—a short text or other work that the speaker has found generative. The second part\, a talk or lecture\, taking place at 4 p.m.\, will present the speaker’s own speculation on the future\, to be followed by a Q&A. \nSaturdays (through June 22)\, Sundays\, and Thursday\, July 4\nWeekend days and July Fourth will have a wider range of formats: debate\, conversation\, keynote\, performance\, etc. Generally\, sessions will begin at 3 p.m. (times will vary) and last for up to two hours. \nAbout EXPO 1: New York\nEXPO 1: New York is a large-scale exploration of ecological challenges in the context of the economic and sociopolitical instability of the early twenty-first century. Acting in the guise of a festival-as-institution\, EXPO 1: New York reconsiders the museum from the ground up\, presenting a simultaneity of modules\, interventions\, solo projects\, and group exhibitions that encompass all of MoMA PS1 and other locations such as MoMA and Rockaway Beach. EXPO 1: New York is made possible by a partnership with Volkswagen.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Series: The Henry George Theorem with Uncertainty and Lump Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:The Urbanization Project at NYU Stern presents the “Brown Bag Discussion Series.” \nThis week’s discussion is titled The Henry George Theorem with Uncertainty and Lump Infrastructure\, featuring Paul Romer\, of the NYU Stern Economics and Urbanization Project. \nPaul Romer is Professor of Economics at New York University’s Stern School of Business and Director of its Urbanization Project. The Urbanization Project addresses a truly historic challenge and opportunity: welcoming an additional 3 – 5 billion people to urban life in less than a century. The Project’s first initiative helps existing cities plan for expansion. Its second initiative fosters the creation of entirely new cities because history shows that a new city offers a uniquely important opportunity to implement systemic social reform and speed up progress. \nPrior to joining Stern\, Romer taught at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business\, where he took an entrepreneurial detour to start Aplia\, an education technology company dedicated to increasing student effort and engagement. Romer is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2002\, he received the Recktenwald Prize for his work on the role of ideas in sustaining economic growth. \nAll Brown Bag Discussions are held at NYU’s Kaufman Management Center in room 7-191. \n

SUMMARY:Changing Climate\, Shared Experience: Lessons for Asia\, the U.S. and the World
DESCRIPTION:Successfully addressing the challenge of a changing climate is critical for maintaining conditions that are ripe for overall economic sustainability\, political stability\, and growth. Asia is the most disaster prone region in the world\, a fact that places already strained institutions under additional pressure. Simultaneously\, the U.S. faces the prospect of increasingly violent natural disasters\, and in regions where such disasters were previously uncommon.  What lessons can Asia provide for the U.S.\, and what lessons can the U.S. provide for Asia in addressing climate-related issues?  Please join a distinguished panel of experts to discuss climate resiliency\, particularly as it links to water resources\, desertification\, increasing mobility\, displacement\, and ultimately security. \nJohn Briscoe is Gordon McKay Professor of the Practice of Environmental Engineering and Environmental Health at Harvard University\, where he directs the Harvard Water Security Initiative. \nAmanda Ikert is the C40 Initiative Director on Climate Change Adaptation. She was previously the C40 City Director in Jakarta. \nMichael Werz is a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress\, where his work as member of the National Security Team focuses on the nexus of climate change\, migration\, and security and emerging democracies\, especially Turkey\, Mexico\, and Brazil. He has been a senior transatlantic fellow at the German Marshall Fund where his work focused on transatlantic foreign policy and the European Union. \nAndrew Revkin (moderator) is the Senior Fellow for Environmental Understanding at Pace University’s Pace Academy for Applied Environmental Studies\, and writes the award-winning Dot Earth blog for the opinion section of The New York Times.\nCan’t make it to this program? Tune in to AsiaSociety.org/Live at 6:30pm E.T. for a free live video webcast. Viewers are encouraged to submit questions to moderator@asiasociety.org.

SUMMARY:SS General Slocum Disaster Tour
DESCRIPTION:On June 15\, 1904\, General Slocum\, an excursion boat\, caught fire in the East River. The blaze resulted in the deaths of over 1000 passengers\, mostly women and children\, making it New York City’s worst disaster until the 9/11 attacks of 2001.  \nAlmost all of the passengers lived in a German-American enclave in the East Village known as Kleindeutchland. The grief-stricken neighborhood never recovered from the tragedy\, and many survivors resettled to Yorkville\, a growing new German-American community on the Upper East Side. \nOn May 18\, join NYC H2O as they sail aboard the historic tugboat Pegasus\, retracing and recounting the ill fated last voyage of General Slocum. Michael Miscione\, the Manhattan Borough Historian\, will serve tour guide. \nYou can purchase tickets to the event here.

SUMMARY:Protecting the City\, Before Next Time
DESCRIPTION:The conversation around Hurricane Sandy has shifted from rectifying the storm’s aftermath to the city’s future in disaster preparedness. City leaders have proposed several changes to infrastructure that could dramatically alter our cityscapes: building a barrier to block the city from water surges; using eminent domain to declare no-build zones; creating wetlands to absorb the water; making drastic changes to zoning; and making major changes to building codes. The common theme is that the cities cannot just be re-built—they have to be re-built differently. \nOn May 20th\, the Community Advisory Board (CAB) of New York Public Radio offers the public an opportunity to learn about and discuss the scope\, ramifications\, and costs of these proposed changes. The CAB will host a panel\, Protecting the City\, Before Next Time\, in which policymakers\, experts\, and the public can discuss how to prevent future devastation. \nPanelists include: \n* Deputy Mayor Cas Holloway\, charged by Mayor Bloomberg to oversee the preparation of a specific and comprehensive action plan to prepare the city for the climate risks we face \n* Andrew Freedman from Climate Central\, Princeton\, NJ – Andrew Freedman is a senior science writer for Climate Central\, focusing on coverage of extreme weather and climate change \n* Klaus Jacobs\, Columbia University and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory – specializes in risks from global climate change\, sea level rise\, flooding of infrastructure systems.  Mayor Bloomberg appointed him to the NY Panel on Climate Change and he also serves on NY State’s Sea Level Rise Task Force \n* Bob Yaro\, Executive Director Regional Plan Association (RPA) – RPA is America’s  oldest independent urban research and advocacy organization\, working to improve the infrastructure and sustainability of life in the NY/NJ metropolitan region. \nWebsite: \nhttp://www.wnyc.org/outreach/cab/

SUMMARY:WATER_WORKS Competition Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:Gowanus by Design is proud to present the winning entries from Water_Works\, its second annual design and planning competition. The intent of the competition was to provide a new community resource that will occupy the site of the Douglas Degraw pool with a Combined Sewer Overflow [CSO] retention facility. \nThere were over 250 entries submitted from around the world and the jury was tasked to select nine winners in the areas of architectural design\, community programming\, and urban ecology. The award-winners along with other selected entries will be exhibited at the gallery. \nBased on recent studies\, it is likely that the Douglass and Degraw Street pool and the adjacent Thomas Greene Playground will be demolished in order to properly remediate the heavily contaminated soil below the pool\, which is the site of the former Fulton Manufactured Gas Plant site. The competition focused on how the post-industrial development of this contaminated site in the canal watershed offers the challenge of rethinking how a new community resource can become an agent for the area’s continued renewal. \nVisit the website for more information.
