The Brooklyn Navy Yard is a private property\, and is not open to the public; however\, in an effort to offer public access to the farm\, they will lead two weekly tours of the rooftop on Wednesday afternoons. This access is intended for individuals\, families and groups of four or fewer. Pre-registration is required and unregistered guests will not be granted admission. \nThis event continues until August 28th.

DESCRIPTION: Photo Credit: http://www.nycgovparks.org \nHistorian Thomas Campanella will explore the forgotten “back story” to the 1939 New York World’s Fair\, which began with US Congressman Sol Bloom’s effort to create a great permanent exposition in Brooklyn’s Marine Park to celebrate the bicentennial of George Washington. \nBloom’s proposal for a 1932 Washington Bicentennial Exposition would be the grandest fair ever staged\, with pavilions for 46 nations\, a football stadium for 200\,000 spectators and a centerpiece “taller and greater than either the Woolworth Building or the Eiffel Tower.” \nDespite the backing of the city and Brooklyn civic organizations\, Chicago stripped ahead of New York to stage a fair of its own in 1933. Several years later Robert Moses saw a World’s Fair as a means of funding his dream of turning the Flushing ash dumps into a great park. But Sol Bloom had influence yet\, making sure his beloved General was a major presence at the 1939 New York World’s Fair—towering over the Central Mall in a 65-foot statue by James E. Fraser.

DESCRIPTION:This tour with architectural historian Francis Morrone and co-author of “Guide to New York City Urban Landscapes” (W.W. Norton\, 2013) will look at three generations of Brooklyn landscapes. Cadman Plaza was created in the 1950s\, at the time the largest downtown urban renewal project yet undertaken in America. The project utterly transformed downtown Brooklyn. MetroTech Center was a product of the 1980s\, a unique attempt to create a combined university and corporate campus. Finally\, Brooklyn Bridge Park has transformed Brooklyn’s waterfront between the Manhattan Bridge and Atlantic Avenue. Though not yet complete\, enough has been done that we have a sense of the whole. We will only be able to see a portion of the park\, but our route will take us across the dramatic Squibb Park Bridge. Our vast network of reservoirs\, aqueducts and tunnels almost effortlessly provides eight million of us with more than a billion gallons of water a day. Among the cleanest water systems on Earth\, it is a seemingly inexhaustible resource that we tend to take for granted. But it is finite. As the English sage Thomas Fuller wrote\,“We never know the worth of water till the well is dry.” \nThat is a tough message to convey to New Yorkers\, who have not experienced a drought in some 30 years. And yet\, climate patterns are changing. One-sixth of the world’s population is water stressed. Scientists believe the global supply of fresh water is diminishing. And our local water supply is subject to the risks of pollutants\, microorganisms\, and the potential effects of fracking. \nThe New York Conference on Water will explore what New Yorkers can do to preserve and protect this precious resource. It will also examine how water presents the city with opportunities\, such as recreation and transportation\, as well as risks\, such as rising sea levels and extreme weather. Through an interactive presentation\, participants will learn how to recognize some potentially dangerous ingredients in their everyday food and how to make more educated choices.
