SUMMARY:Diplomats: Global Practice and Representation (WORKac)
DESCRIPTION:Poised at the intersection of architecture\, urbanism\, and ecology\, the work of Columbia Universities Graduate School of Architecture\, Planning\, and Preservation (GSAPP) professor Amale Andraos and alum Dan Wood has taken them from New York City’s Lower East Side to St. Petersburg\, Russia\, where WORK architecture company’s master plan for a cultural center on New Holland Island transforms existing warehouses into a “city within a city\,” and to Libreville\, where their under-construction Assembly Hall uses locally sourced materials to create a new icon for the West African capital. There\, a dramatically sloped roof and circular design weave interior and exterior space\, while three courtyard-gardens\, a central 1\,000-seat auditorium\, and a porous façade with louvers made from African limestone\, provide continuous views of the surrounding Gabonese landscape. \nFor more information visit the GSAAP site.

SUMMARY:Forecaster: New York Minute
DESCRIPTION:  \nNew York Minutes is a conversation with artists\, architects\, scholars\, curators and collectors on the status of new museums\, collecting practices\, and the roles of architecture and the cities in which these institutions are lodged. \nNew York Minutes is a component of Collecting Architecture Territories\, a research and teaching project that has been developed through courses held at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation (GSAPP). Conceived in 2012 as a collaboration between GSAPP and the DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Art\, its core premise is that we are presently witnessing a shift in the historical relationship between architecture and collecting practices\, one that inherited conceptions of the museum no longer adequately describe. Collecting Architecture Territories examines the veritable explosion of institutions and foundations that have emerged out of private art collections\, one of the most significant developments reshaping the intersection of art and architectural practice over the last three decades.

SUMMARY:Abundant Access: Public Transit as an Instrument of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:In this engaging lecture\, “Abundant Access: Public Transit as an Instrument of Freedom\,” Jarrett Walker will leads audiences beyond some of the distractions that sometimes dominate transit debates\, to an understanding of public transit’s core power: to give people freedom. \nWalker is one of the most innovative planners and advocates for public transit in North America today. He believes that transit can be simple\, if we focus first on the underlying geometry that all transit technologies share\, and that the forces that cause transit to succeed or fail often go unexamined in today’s transit debates. For architects\, urban designers\, housing and development professionals\, transit is key to building successful cities\, yet its essential task and the keys to its success are not always clear. \nRSVP required. Click here…
