DESCRIPTION:The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden\nSundays\, July 5–26\nGate opens at 7:00 p.m.; concerts begin at 8:00 p.m. \nThe Museum of Modern Art established Summergarden in 1971. In keeping with MoMA’s history of presenting jazz and classical music in the Sculpture Garden\, this year’s concert series once again welcomes the participation of The Juilliard School and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Titled New Music for New York\, the series comprises four evenings of adventurous contemporary music\, with premieres each night. Juilliard concerts are performed by members of The New Juilliard Ensemble\, under the artistic direction of Joel Sachs\, who has assembled two distinctive programs of recent compositions\, all of which are enjoying their New York premieres. Jazz at Lincoln Center has selected two up-and-coming jazz ensembles whose concerts emphasize original works\, each with one world premiere. \nSummergarden is free and seating is on a first-come\, first-served basis. The Sculpture Garden may close if attendance reaches maximum capacity. Entrance to Summergarden is through the Sculpture Garden gate on West 54 Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues. The Sculpture Garden opens at 7:00 p.m.\, and concerts start at 8:00 p.m. and run approximately one hour to 90 minutes. The Sculpture Garden closes at 10:00 p.m. In the event of rain\, concerts will be held in The Agnes Gund Garden Lobby\, and the Museum’s 54 Street entrance will open at 7:30 p.m. The exhibition galleries are closed during Summergarden. The Garden Bar sells savory and sweet treats\, including baguette sandwiches and homemade soft pretzels with dipping sauces\, locally made gelato from Il Laboratorio del Gelato\, wine\, beer\, and specialty cocktails. Parking is a flat rate of $5 starting at 5 p.m. (All other Saturdays\, we close at 6 p.m.) \nSome Target First Saturday activities take place in smaller and more intimate locations in the Museum\, so you’ll need a ticket for those programs. Ticket lines often form 30 minutes before tickets are distributed at the Visitor Center (in the Rubin Lobby). If you’re a Member\, pick up tickets from the Membership Desk while supplies last. While we do our best to keep our listings as up-to-date as possible\, sometimes last-minute program changes are unavoidable.

SUMMARY:Summer Streets New York City
DESCRIPTION:Sum­mer Streets is an annual cel­e­bra­tion of New York City’s most valu­able pub­lic space—our streets. On three con­sec­u­tive Sat­ur­days in August (AUGUST 2nd\, 9th\, and 16th) from 7am-1pm\, nearly seven miles of NYC’s streets are opened for peo­ple to play\, run\, walk and bike. Sum­mer Streets pro­vides space for healthy recre­ation and encour­ages New York­ers to use more sus­tain­able forms of trans­porta­tion. In 2013\, more than 300\,000 peo­ple took advan­tage of the open streets. \nSum­mer Streets is mod­eled on other events from around the world includ­ing Ciclovía in Bogotá\, Colom­bia and the Paris Plage in France. The event is part bike tour\, part walk­ing tour\, part block party—a great time for exer­cise\, peo­ple watch­ing\, or just enjoy­ing sum­mer morn­ings. Passersby are weclome to par­tic­i­pate in arts and crafts work­shops\, lis­ten to musi­cal per­for­mances\, learn to salsa dance\, eat healthy snacks\, climb a 25′ climb­ing wall\, soar through the sky on a 160′ zipline and explore a 179 years voice tunnel. \nHeld between 7:00 am to 1:00 pm\, Sum­mer Streets extends from the Brook­lyn Bridge to Cen­tral Park\, along Park Avenue and con­nect­ing streets\, with easy access from all points in New York City\, allow­ing par­tic­i­pants to plan a trip as long or short as they wish. Visitors are encouraged to bring their cameras to photograph the park in progress\, bring their walking shoes and water to hike the site\, and to pack a picnic or get lunch from event food trucks. \nShuttles into the site will run continuously from parking at Wild Avenue to the creek of North Park\, and on a scheduled basis from St. George Ferry Terminal. DESCRIPTION:Shakespeare in the Parking Lot\, presented by The Drilling Company (Hamilton Clancy\, Artistic Director)\, is a summer New York institution offering free Shakespeare productions. It began in a municipal parking lot at the corner of Ludlow and Broome Streets in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. \nSeats are available on a first come first serve basis\, with audience members often arriving early to secure a place. You are encouraged and welcome to bring your own chair. Once seats are gone\, blankets are spread out. “We’ve never turned anyone away and there’s never a wait for tickets!” brags Clancy. \nWhy a parking lot? “It is a tremendously accessible gathering place in the heart of the city. Like most companies that do Shakespeare we are following the spirit of Joseph Papp. But putting our own spin on it by placing it in a parking lot\, making an urban wrinkle\,” says founding artistic director Hamilton Clancy. Shows are offered while the lot is in use. The action sometimes happens around a parked car which drives away during a performance. At such times\, the players stop and the audience moves its chairs\, pausing the performance the same way a show would stop for rain uptown in Central Park. DESCRIPTION:The free Central Park Conservancy Film Festival screens classics just north of the Sheep Meadow (enter the park at West 72nd Street). Bring a blanket and a picnic basket and come early to snag a good spot (gates open at 6:30pm; movies start at 8pm). The 2015 lineup comprises five classics from the year 1980: Fame\, The Blues Brothers\, Airplane!\, Raging Bull andSuperman II.
