DESCRIPTION:The Building Energy Exchange does summer blockbusters a little differently than Hollywood.  We cover some of the same subject matter- storms\, floods\, and droughts- but ours is a sober scientific discussion that focuses on resolve and resourcefulness rather than panic. \nJoin the Building Energy Exchange for a presentation and discussion of the 2015 report from the New York City Panel on Climate Change (NPCC)  and how the NYC Office of Recovery & Resiliency (NYC ORR) is integrating the reports findings into their work.  The NPCC 2015 report\, titled Building the Knowledge Base for Climate Resiliency\, reviews and assesses New York City’s resiliency to the expected impacts of climate change\, which will likely include increases of annual temperatures\, levels of precipitation\, and sea level in the next century. \nOur discussion will survey the key findings from the NPCC report and how they are currently being integrated into the work of NYC ORR and addressed in policy agendas dealing with climate resiliency and public health.

SUMMARY:Life Along the Curb: Inside the Department of Sanitation of New York
DESCRIPTION:Keeping New York clean has always been a daunting challenge. The city generates close to 40\,000 tons of garbage every day – and yet New Yorkers are not buried by their waste. Who picks up all that trash? Who sweeps the streets? How is the work organized? And where do all those discards all go? Drawing on several years of ethnographic and archival research as well as her own experiences as a municipal sanitation worker\, anthropologist Robin Nagle explores some of the political\, infrastructural\, economic\, and cultural complexities that shape the dynamics of solid waste management in North America’s largest city. \nRobin Nagle is the author of Picking Up: On the Streets and Behind the Trucks with the Sanitation Workers of New York City (2013). She is the anthropologist-in-residence with New York’s Department of Sanitation. She also serves as a clinical associate professor of anthropology and environmental studies at NYU\, where she runs the Draper Interdisciplinary Master’s Program in the Graduate School of Arts and Science. \nAt 8:00 pm\, we will screen the 2015 short documentary film\, “One Man’s Trash” (17 mins) by Kelly Adams.  Synopsis: For 34 years\, Nelson Molina has worked for the NYC Department of Sanitation\, developing a unique relationship to the objects that fill the garbage bags lining the streets. With a keen curatorial eye for finding treasure in household trash\, Nelson has created a collection of found objects in a sanitation garage in East Harlem\, which he refers to as a museum of “Treasures in the Trash.” As the film follows Nelson on his route and through his collection\, he encourages us to see the things that we encounter in daily life anew. \nThis is the third and final event in “Garbage and the City: Two Centuries of Dirt\, Debris\, and Disposal\,“ a program series presented in collaboration with The New York Academy of Medicine\,“ and ARCHIVE Global\,“ and supported by a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities. \n\nTickets\nFree event\, but pre-registration is required. \nPhoto Credit: Museum of the City of New York

SUMMARY:Staten Island Circumnavigation
DESCRIPTION:New York City’s *other* great circumnavigation — Staten Island! This paddle is perhaps our region’s most diverse in terms of natural and historical sights\, and water conditions. We’ll do it in two days\, with camping\, to best appreciate the experience. \nWhile this approximately 45-mile trip is not an Olympian endeavor\, it does require some athletic endurance and ability to press on despite blisters and scrapes. Some of us have done it in a single day. The second day is much easier. \nThere is a chance that we will further segment the trip\, but don’t count on it. Also don’t count on these estimates to be precise — with a group\, schedules are fluid and all that really matters is catching the current at critical points. \nWe have space for 20 people and several guides. Students\, volunteers\, select community groups\, and supporters have priority. A primary goal of this trip is orientation so that volunteers will know where to bring kids in the future. \nPlease email tours@harborlab.org with the subject “Staten Circ” if you’d like to participate.

DESCRIPTION:Solar astronomy observing sessions are held in the Bronx at Edgar Allen Poe Park on the last Saturday of each month\, from April through November.  Poe Park\, home of the landmark Edgar Allen Poe Cottage\, is situated on the Grand Concourse\, just blocks from Fordham Road\, in the Bronx. \nThe meeting spot is on the bandshell plaza adjacent to the Poe Park Visitor Center. AAA members will be present with telescopes specially filtered to view the Sun. You may bring your own equipment\, but they insist on strict safety provisions due to the dangers of improperly filtered direct solar viewing. DESCRIPTION:Borrowed Light is an outdoor sound and sculpture installation by artist Sari Carel set to open in Sunset Park in May 2015. The project features abstract geometric architectural forms\, incorporating field-recorded sounds from the park’s local fauna. A series of related community workshops and performances will accompany the project throughout the summer.\n\n\nabout the project.\nMay 8 – October 5\, 2015\nLocated next to the Sunset Park Recreational Center\n44th St & 7th Ave\, Brooklyn\nOpen during park hours\nsound installation plays intermittently throughout the day\nSari Carel worked with Sunset Park’s stewards to gather data on the park’s local fauna; She collected field recordings of these native species and created a richly layered soundscape for the installation. The piece will be played from speakers embedded in the sculpture\, and park visitors are invited to engage with both sound and sculpture. \nThe project’s sculptural element forms a small architectural environment\, acting as a focal point and physical marker for the presence of the less material sound piece. Made out of several free-standing wood elements\, this grouping draws on a Modernist vocabulary\, using forms that are anchored in a utilitarian past\, but also depart from that. The forms will echo the grid lines of the city\, and create a drawing in space\, conversing with the emblematic image of the Manhattan skyline visible from Sunset Park. \nBorrowed Light is part of Carel’s continued investigation into alternative relationships between sound\, image and audience. More importantly\, Borrowed Light will give participants an opportunity to form a personal experience with an art piece and get a palpable sense of the creative process as both a private and public practice. The project’s main goal is to open the creative process and give participants a hands-on experience of the playfulness and enhanced receptivity that are at the core of art making but are rarely discussed in arts classes or museums tours. \noutreach.\nConceived specifically for Sunset Park\, “Borrowed Light” will be enriched by outreach programs for neighborhood children and other interested community members organized by More Art in collaboration with local organizations\, such as PS 169\, Turning Point Educational Center\, and the Sunset Park Recreation Center. The artist will lead art\, music and literary workshops\, free and open to the public\, for different age groups\, in which the sculpture will be the thematic fulcrum as well as a stage-set. Participants will learn about the essential role of art\, music and nature in an urban environment through hands-on activities that will open the creative process to everyone by underscoring the playfulness and enhanced receptivity that are at the core of art making. The installation will also become the backdrop for a series of evening events run by our community partners\, comprising live performances\, music and food\, that will bring the entire community together in the spirit of art and collaboration. \nabout the community.\nSunset Park has a vibrant history and diverse community. The neighborhood demonstrated its resilience through the crime-ridden 1980’s and has seen great positive changes in the last few years. When immigrant families were priced out of other neighborhoods\, Sunset Park provided the opportunity for affordable housing. DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Red Vines\, Miska Draskoczy\nGowanus Wild by Miska Draskoczy\nThis exhibition aims to turn concepts of nature photography on their head by finding the beautiful in what most consider a man-made environmental catastrophe.\nFrom the artist: \nMy vision for Gowanus Wild is to illustrate a personal exploration of nature and wilderness in the paradoxical setting of a contaminated industrial environment. As the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn has been declared a federal Superfund cleanup site and seen over 150 years of continuous industrial use\, one of my aims with the series is to show just how tenacious nature can be in the face of such grave environmental destruction. Set entirely at night when the area empties of people and activity\, the mood is one of stillness\, reflection\, and discovery. \nI’ve lived on the border of Gowanus and Park Slope since 2008\, and walking home through the deserted streets\, I was always struck by how odd and atmospheric the place felt. At first I photographed the area because it inspired interesting images. Later I started to ask myself more consciously what it was that drew me to it. While an indictment of man’s abuse of the environment is perhaps inevitable\, my goal is to not just celebrate nature’s resilience but to also show how it is paralleled by the human ability to seek and find the balm of nature in the most unlikely of places. I believe wilderness and adventure are natural longings and that satisfying these urges is perhaps less about far flung travel and more about altering our perception and awakening to our Newsurroundings\, however ugly or distraught they may be. \n\nGowanus Wild is coming to the Brooklyn Public Library for the summer from June 11th to September 25th: \nJoin for the opening reception on Thursday June 11th\, 6pm-8pm in the Ingersoll Young Adult Reading Room\, 1st floor\, Central Library in Grand Army Plaza. \nSeveral other shows are also opening at the library including artists Stephen Mallon\, Leah Oates and Leonard Ursachi\, and a show on fairy tales curated by Donna Miskend. With the enlisted help of legendary Clash guitarist Mick Jones as producer\, KD&L recorded The Third in their self-constructed\, 16-track analogue studio in a derelict Indian restaurant in Camden Town. The band has sold over a quarter of a million albums worldwide\, sold out headline tours and have opened shows for major bands including Coldplay and Stereophonics. From a very young age they have been inspiring audiences at their packed shows\, each taking turns on vocals and jumping from one instrument to another. Joining them on stage are their mum former Raincoats drummer Ingrid Weiss on bass\, the original Bombay Bad Boy – Daddy Grazz – on rhythm guitar\, and Jamaican trumpet legend Eddie “Tan Tan” Thornton.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Freshkills Park Team and Kayak Staten Island for a kayaking experience like no other! Kayak along the Fresh Kill and see the site from a different perspective. This three hour excursion will take you into the William T. Davis Wildlife Refuge and up close to some of the varied wildlife that calls Freshkills Park home. \nKayaks\, life vests\, and brief safety training will be provided. Kayak events are currently limited to participants ages 16 and over\, in good health and with basic swimming skills. Be prepared to get wet! Space is very limited. SUMMARY:Native Plant's Summit at the New York Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:The Northeastern U.S. hosts a rich diversity of native plants\, many of which play essential roles for humans and the environment. Alarmingly\, a number of these species are seeing a precipitous decline. Many natives are imperiled as a result (New York State considers one-quarter of its native plant species to be of conservation concern).
