SUMMARY:E-Waste Recycling Event
DESCRIPTION:Photo credit: uitsnews.iu.edu \nDon’t know what to do with old or broken electronics that are lying around at home? Come to the summer E-waste recycling event sponsored by Tekserve with support from ConEdison\, and New York Community Trust! \nE-waste recycling is an important aspect of protecting the environment. E-waste that is not properly disposed can cause leachate\, a liquid that has dissolved or incorporated environmentally harmful materials. Leachate can be harmful to human health because it can flow into ground water\, increases pollution\, and releases harmful chemicals into the air and water. Once leachate occurs\, it is expensive\, and difficult to treat and contain. \nAnother benefit of E-waste recycling is the conservation of materials! Many of the materials in electronics require geologic processes that took millions of years to form!  If these materials are not reused\, we will surely run out of them before they can be replenished. \nYou can also stop by the E-waste Warehouse at 469 President Street\, Brooklyn to buy refurbished electronics. Store hours are Tuesday\, Thursday\, and Friday (10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)\, Wednesday (12:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.) and Saturday (10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.). \nSpecial offers include a Green Karma coupon worth between $5 and $500 off any Tekserve products or services and a raffle ticket for a MacBook Air! Zipcar is also giving existing Zipcar members $15 in driving credit if you bring electronics to the event! \n

SUMMARY:Land Art Generator Exhibit: Freshkill Parks
DESCRIPTION:The Land Art Generator Initiative: Freshkills Park is an exhibition of the top 25 designs selected out of 250 submissions from around the globe by artists\, architects\, designers\, engineers\, landscape architects\, and more. LAGI 2012 was an ideas competition to design a site-specific public artwork that\, in addition to its conceptual beauty\, has the ability to harness energy cleanly from nature and convert it into electricity for the utility grid. At 2\,200 acres\, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination will make the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape. The top three submissions not only heighten the beauty of the surrounding park land but also provide a gateway into a greater discussion about the preservation of the environment. \n \nImage Credits:  Scene-Sensor // Crossing Social and Ecological Flows\, James Murray & Shota Vashakmadze \nlearn more

SUMMARY:History of sports in Central Park
DESCRIPTION:  \nPhoto Credit: http://www.michaelyamashita.com/ \nOver the years sports have become a much larger part of everyday life. Today\, millions of Americans watch their favorite athletes on TV and play sports in their free time. However\, this was not always the case. Prior to the industrial revolution not many people had leisure time and athletics were not a major component in their lives. But\, as cities began to develop\, sports started to become mainstream. As a result people needed space in order to play their favorite games. \nTake a tour and discover how tastes in recreation have changed since the mid-19th century. Listen and be amazed by how Central Park has ultimately evolved in order to cater to those tastes. Be advised that this route involves climbing a few stairs. \nFor directions\, please call (212) 794-4064. \nGroups of seven or more people must call (212) 360-2726 or email tours@centralparknyc.org to schedule a custom tour.
