SUMMARY:Transition New York City Introduces Permaculture Design at Far Rockaway Garden Workday
DESCRIPTION:This event is in preparation for the Rockaway Health Festival and Transition Convergence\, June 26-28th\, 2015. \nLocation: Battalion Pentecostal Assembly Church\, 454 Beach 67th St\, Arverne\, NY 11692\nTake the A train to the Beach 67th St. stop and walk three blocks north. \nCome out and learn how to build raised bed gardens! We will build a community garden with raised beds on a grassy lot  on Beach 67th St.\, alongside Rockaway residents and NYC Transition movement activists.   \nPut your permaculture skills to use in “small space design” situations with Rockaway community members building back from Sandy devastation.  Walls of the beds will be made of wooden boards donated by Build it Green\, and burlap bags filled with wood chips. With this experience\, the guidance we’ve received from expert permaculture designers\, you’ll know how to create gardens on other urban sites anywhere with soil in need of remediation. \nThe Transition movement is a community organizing response to climate change\, resource depletion and financial instability\, with over 1\,100 Transition groups in 44 countries and over 150 initiatives in the US.  It brings neighbors together to assess the resilience of their communities and catalyze effective grassroots projects\, using the Transition Neighborhood Field Guide process\, targeted to the specific needs of NYC and other big urban communities.  Visit www.transitionnyc.org and our Facebook page for updates. Please contact us if you would like to volunteer. \nPhoto Credit: The Transition Movement

SUMMARY:Minetta Brook Walk
DESCRIPTION:Minetta Brook Walk  \nWednesday May 27 at 6:30 p.m.  \nGreenwich Village\n \nBefore NYC became concrete and asphalt\, the island was covered by rivers\, streams and marshes. Greenwich Village’s Minetta Brook is one such watercourse and still makes its presence known in the basements of the structures built on top of it; some are still visible if you know where to look. \nJoin urban explorer Steve Duncan of Undercity.org as he shows us the Minetta’s 1.5 mile buried path and explains the waterway functioning both today and in the past. He’ll point out the secret code on the manhole covers\, tell you what their placement means\, and how different engravings indicate what lies beneath the city. On the walk\, you can peer into ventilation holes and manhole covers to get a glimpse of the underground waterways. Afterward\, you may never walk the city’s streets again without wondering what lies beneath. \nPlease register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/minetta-brook-walk-may-27-tickets-16812641062 \nLight rain we walk. Speakers will include some of the world’s most forward-thinking visionaries who\, together\, will discuss key civic issues\, propose solutions\, and formulate action for the city of tomorrow. Purchase a Conference Pass\, which includes access to the Mayoral Panel\, or tickets to the Mayoral Panel only. \nFor more information about Thursday’s schedule\, please visit: http://www.ideas-city.org/#event/ideas-city-conference \nFRIDAY 5/29\n\nThe second day of the Festival will animate a basilica and a gym with dance battles\, poetry slams\, urban-design pitches\, sound and video environments\, hot-air balloons\, games\, and mobile art spaces. It’ll be a whirlwind of engagement and provocation that illuminates the invisible forces in our cities. Purchase a ticket to attend the IDEAS CITY Keynote and A Performative Conference in Nine Acts. \nFor more information\, please visit: http://www.ideas-city.org/ \nSATURDAY 5/30\n\nThe third and final day of the Festival will transform the streetscape into a temporary city of ideas\, redefining public space and architecture. SUMMARY:Bronx River Bike Tour
DESCRIPTION:Map of the Williamsbridge Reservoir 1893 (David Rumsey)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Bronx River Bike Tour  \n Sunday May 31 at 10 a.m.  \nWilliamsbridge Reservoir\, Bronx \nCome be awed by the Bronx River’s beauty: bike with NYC H2O’s Matt Malina & Leigh Wells to tour the river from Williamsbridge Oval to its source in Valhalla! \nDid you know that the Bronx River is NYC’s only true fresh water river?  It was considered as a source for NYC’s drinking water in the 1830’s but was labelled “an open sewer” by the end of that century.  The river has made a comeback since the days of reckless dumping and now supports many forms of aquatic life like Alewife Herring and even a beaver named “Jose.” \nThe ride is 17 miles long and will take 3 hours. 7 miles of the tour will be on the Bronx River Parkway which is open to bikes for Bicycle Sundays.\n\n\nThe tour starts at the Williamsbridge Oval and finishes at the Kensico Dam in Valhalla.  The ride is 17 miles long and will take 3 hours (12 mph pace). 7 miles of the ride will be on the Bronx River Parkway as it is opened to bikes for Bicycle Sundays. \nMetro North train service is available from Valhalla for the return trip. \nRain date: Sunday June 7 \n\n\nTickets and more info here \nEducators email mm1566@nyu.edu for discount code\n

SUMMARY:Geology of Fifth Avenue Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Geology of Fifth Avenue Walking Tour  \nSunday June 7 at 10 a.m. \nCentral Park South \nNew York possesses a treasure trove of building stones -in lobbies\, on facades\, sidewalks and curbstone. Water plays an important role in the formation of many of them. The beautiful building materials used in its streets\, building facades and lobbies show the richness and variety of colors of these pages of earth history.  On our trip we will see many rock type varieties from North America\, Europe\, Asia\, South America and Africa ranging in age from 3 billion years to a mere 1 million years old. And we will decipher the history that each rock tells.\n\n\n\n\n\nSidney Horenstein is a geologist and environmental educator emeritus at the American Museum of Natural History. SUMMARY:Microgrids: They're going to be big!
DESCRIPTION:Following Superstorm Sandy\, there has been growing interest in installing microgrids as a way to increase resiliency of the utility grid. Adding on-site renewable energy generating systems\, such as solar photovoltaics and small wind turbines\, not only decreases the lifetime cost of the microgrid\, but also helps meet sustainability goals of the microgrid owner. \nJoin us in exploring some of the primary policy and technical advantages to installing microgrids\, as well as some of the potential pitfalls. We’ll also hear why microgrids are likely to be a vital component of the power grid of the future. \n– See more at: http://urbangreencouncil.org/content/events/microgrids-theyre-going-be-big#sthash.K8HgA9gF.dpuf

SUMMARY:Build a Community Garden in Far Rockaway with Transition New York City
DESCRIPTION:Battalion Pentecostal Assembly Church\, 454 Beach 67th St\, Arverne\, NY 11692\nTake the A train to the Beach 67th St. stop and walk three blocks north. \nOn Sat. May 23\, NYC Transition activists and permaculturists built a community garden with raised beds\, alongside Rockaway community members building back from Sandy devastation. Walls of the beds are made of wooden boards donated by Build it Green\, and burlap bags from coffee roaster White Coffee filled with wood chips from NYC Parks Dept.\, and filled with plants donated by Home Depot. This method can be used to create gardens on other urban sites anywhere with soil in need of remediation. See pictures at our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TransitionNYC/ \nCome out and join our second workday. We’ll plant more raised beds\, and put up flyers for the Convergence at Rockaway retail stores. \nBurlap bags have amazing properties\, and volunteers will be able to take home a stack of burlap bags to their own gardens. \nLet us know if you plan to join us on 6/13 at transition.nyc.hub@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:The Reach of the Landmarks Law: A Balancing Act
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Museum of the City of New York: \nWhen New York’s landmarks law took effect 50 years ago\, it forever changed the course of the city’s history. But has its proponents’ full vision been realized this past half century? In some cases\, the law may have in fact been surpassed by newer legislation in other cities. Could ours be strengthened\, or are additional preservation tools needed to complement the law? At this panel\, preservation experts will discuss these and other questions exploring the possibilities\, limitations\, and challenges of the landmarks law. This program delves into the themes of the new MCNY exhibition Saving Place: 50 Years of New York City Landmarks. \nReception to follow! \nLeonard Koerner\, Chief Assistant Corporation Counsel\, NYC Law Department\, Office of the Corporation\nAlison G.
