SUMMARY:Transportation Alternatives Brooklyn Activist Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn is a constantly changing borough filled with bright spirits and unique ideas. The T.A. Brooklyn Committee harnesses the power of those who call this borough home to create impactful results from Bay Ridge to Greenpoint\, Brownsville to Cobble Hill and Red Hook to Brighton Beach. Working to make the streets safer and more welcoming is the highest priority and you’ll find a highly energized group at our monthly meetings (which are often followed by a short social outing)\, on our frequent bike rides and taking part in advocacy actions around the borough. No experience is necessary to join in\, just a commitment to making Brooklyn home to better public transit and safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. We also host an online Google group for continued discussion of local advocacy and news. For more information please e-mail volunteer@transalt.org or attend one of our monthly meetings. \nMeeting Details \nDate: Last Thursday of the month\nTime: 7 – 8:30 pm\nLocation:  YWCA\, 30 3rd Ave\, 1st Floor Meeting Room. \nAfter the close of the meeting\, we will be going to Hollow Nickel\, 494 Atlantic Ave (between 3rd Ave & Nevins St)\, to continue the discussions\, to network\, to eat and to drink.

SUMMARY:erik benson: The Park every weekday
DESCRIPTION:Erik Benson’s paintings depict the landscape of everyday metropolitan life\, created with thousands of shapes hand-cut from dried sheets of acrylic paint. Benson uses this painstaking compositional technique to capture the complexity of urban development\, with its interplay of construction and creative destruction\, density and emptiness. Familiar cityscapes emerge as more complex than they initially appear. \nOriginally I was interested in creating a painting vocabulary that depicted the plasticity and temporality of unexamined things such as playgrounds and construction sites\,” says Benson. “These interests have been growing into ideas and concerns that deal with the urban landscape\, such as how cities grow and shrink\, and what these issues mean to the inhabitants.” \nIn these vivid new paintings\, Benson considers the role and impact of playgrounds\, trees and parks within evolving communities\, often setting the saturated colors and bold shapes of play equipment and dynamic tree branch patterns against the muted backdrops of the surrounding buildings. Inspired by his neighborhood of Bushwick\, Brooklyn\, he creates works that are not precise representations\, but rather archetypes\, at once foreboding and optimistic. \n \n learn more! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Flatbush Zombies / The Underachievers Built by MeanRed and presented in association with MoCADA's Soul of Brooklyn Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Shocking\, hilarious\, sometimes revolting\, and yet completely endearing\, the Flatbush Zombies are a genuine mystery in a musical landscape where few still exist. Meechy Darko and Juice\, Brooklyn bred youth with a penchant for gold grills\, Charles Manson and dropping acid\, make up the high energy trio alongside producer and lifelong friend Erick Arc Elliott. The Zombies rose out of complete obscurity on the back of a synth heavy\, weed laced banger entitled “Thug Waffle\,” an ode to marijuana and breakfast foods which immediately propelled them to the forefront of New York’s fresh crop of talent.  Their first full length mixtape\, D.R.U.G.S. (July 2012)\, released with over 50\,000 downloads in the first week and provides the backbone for their hypnotically abrasive and off the wall live show. \nMarlong Fung and Akeem Joseph are The Underachievers\, but don’t be fooled by the name. Better known as Issa Krishna Dash and Ak\, the two Brooklyn natives began making music a little over a year ago with a goal of enlightening those who chose to listen.  It’s Dash and Ak’s vigorous lyricism and introspects that attract listeners as their melodies and vivid visuals become the icing on the cake.  In the summer of 2012 the duo released their first visual for “So Devilish\,” which became an instant hit.  A month later\, the release of their second single\, “Gold Soul Theory\,” would prove these two were in fact\, no underachievers. Their third duet\, “Herb Shuttles\,” kept them on top as listeners began realizing they were here to stay. Unlike any other Hip-Hop duo\, these young MC’s really take the elements of the genre to another level. \n \nlearn more!

SUMMARY:Changing Lens Photo Exhibition every day except Mondays and Sundays
DESCRIPTION:Students from the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation present a photography exhibition entitled Changing Lenses at Poe Park Visitors Center. The exhibition marks the beginning of a new program that expands arts education for young scientists\, and brings their work beyond the walls of the school into the community at large. \nThroughout the Spring 2013 semester\, nine students in grades 9 – 11 gathered for weekly after-school sessions with UASWC art instructor Jessica Sinclair and teaching artist Mustafa Önder. Using SLR cameras\, nine students were introduced to the fundamentals of photography. Emphasis was placed on the communicative properties of image-making: composition\, storytelling\, and conceptualization. Photographic outings were undertaken throughout the local community\, to the Bronx Zoo\, and to Bryant Park in Manhattan. The group also took a field trip to the International Center of Photography\, where they received a guided tour by a museum educator. \nThe project is sponsored by Joy of Givings Something\, Inc. (JGS)\, a not-for-profit organization that promotes the art of photography. \n \nlearn more!
