SUMMARY:Subway Reefs: Sea Turtles on the 7
DESCRIPTION:  \nSubway Reefs: Sea Turtles on the 7\nFriday November 14 at 7pm\nHunter College\n\nIn 2001 the MTA retired its fleet of Redbird subway cars. It gave the trains to states on the Atlantic coast to serve as artificial reefs for fish. The program has been successful in supporting the web of undersea life and attracts game fish\, which in turn draws sport fishermen and scuba divers to the reefs. New Jersey\, Delaware\, Maryland\, Virginia\, South Carolina and Georgia have “reefed” about 1\,000 subway cars in all from the MTA. \nCome hear Bob Martore\, the Artificial Reef Manager from South Carolina’s Department of Natural Resources\, explain how subway cars help provide homes for marine life. \nThe talk will be held in room 714 of Hunter College West. Entrance is at 68th Street and Lexington Avenue. Tickets are free but please RSVP. \n \n  \nFor more information visit: http://www.nych2o.org/\n  \n

SUMMARY:Bk Ecology Bike Tour
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: NYC DOT\nBk Ecology Bike Tour\nSaturday November 15 at 11am\nEast New York\nLearn about Brooklyn’s environmental challenges and successes on NYC H20’s leisurely and informative bike ride along Jamaica Bay. \nClimate change\, rising sea levels and intense storms like Hurricane Sandy have persuaded city planners of the value of marshland in storm water management.  A century ago the neighborhoods Sandy flooded were wetlands. \nAll 14 of NYC’s sewage plants are built in this vulnerable floodplain along the water’s edge. Their effluent flows into our bay’s and rivers\, so maintaining high quality treatment is vital to protect beach goers as well as wildlife. \nGovernment agencies like DEP and the Army Core of Engineers have partnered with local NGO’s like Jamaica Bay Eco Watchers and NRDC to design a plan to restore Jamaica Bay’s ecosystem. Initiatives include restoring wetlands\, mitigating combined sewer overflows (CSO) with green and grey infrastructure and upgrading sewage plants. \n\n\nOn this ride we will;\n–   Bike along the Jamaica Bay greenway\, visit restored\nwetlands and demonstrate how the multifaceted Jamaica\nBay Watershed Protection Plan is being put into action\n–   Visit a sewage plant and a storm water retention facility\nlearning about CSO’s and the ad hoc way in which the\nsewage system initially developed as well as the\nenvironmental and urban planning history of this area\n–   Explore one of NYC’s ‘Forever Wild’ areas\n–   See lesser known neighborhoods of Brooklyn\, including\nSpring Creek\, Bergen  Basin\, Sheepshead Bay\, Brighton\nBeach and Coney Island\, all fronting Jamaica Bay\n\n\nThe tour will be led by Bk ecology enthusiasts Adam Schwartz and Matt Malina.\n  \nWe will ride from the 26th Ward sewage plant to Coney Island along the Jamaica Bay bike path a distance of 13 miles. We will finish at the Stillwell Ave F Train station. \nThe pace will be 10 mph. We ride together for safety. Helmets are required. \nRain date: Sunday\, Nov 16th. \nREGISTER HERE: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/brooklyn-eco-bike-tour-fall-2014-tickets-14092776875 \n  \n\n\n\n\nEmail mm1566@nyu.edu if you are a student or educator to receive the discount code.\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Transition Neighborhoods Workshop - Neighborhood Organizing for Resilient Green Cities
DESCRIPTION:Two days after the Climate March in September\, the beta launch of Transition Neighborhoods took place in NYC. Riding the crest of a wave of climate change activism\, many New Yorkers came to explore how to keep the momentum going. 19 attendees\, almost half of the 45 people in the room\, expressed an interest in initiating a Transition project in their neighborhood. Transition is a global community organizing response to climate change\, resource depletion and financial instability. \nThere are 1\,100 plus Transition groups in 44 countries with 16 national hubs that have emerged to serve these groups. In the U.S. 151 Transition initiatives have formed with 100 more in formation. It’s time for New York City to tap into the power\, creativity\, and collective genius of this global grassroots network. \nIt starts with a series of small group meetings in which friends and neighbors go through chapters of a guidebook. They strengthen their sense of place and neighborhood culture while building relationships\, promoting local food\, and mapping their neighborhood’s current state of resiliency. The Transition Neighborhoods Prequel shows how to coalesce a group of friends and neighbors\, and get a resilience initiative up and running in your community. In this highly interactive workshop\, we’ll walk through the Prequel using small group scenarios and role playing\, and explore the first chapters of the guidebook. We’ll work through NYC-specific challenges\, with lots of time for questions and answers. Facilitated by Pamela Boyce Simms\, Lead Trainer\, Transition US and the Mid-Atlantic Transition Hub. \nNYC Transition Hub website: www.transitionnyc.org  \nFor more information about the Transition USA network\, please visit http://www.transitionus.org/ \nContact NYC Transition Hub at transition.nyc.hub@gmail.com \n

SUMMARY:The End of the Environmental Era
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, November 19\, 2014 from 11:00 am to 12:50 pm\nLocation: Columbia University\, Morningside Campus\, International Affairs Building\, Room 407 \nContact: For further information regarding this event\, please contact Hayley Martinez by sending email to hmartinez@ei.columbia.edu. \nThe Earth Institute presents Origins of Environmental Law Lecture Series Description: Introduction to Early Environmental Legislation\, Pre-1969. \nThis seminar is part of a semester-long lecture series entitled The Origins of Environmental Law: Regulation and Evolution. Leon G. Billings and Thomas C. Jorling are the two senior staff members who led the Senate environment subcommittee which originated and developed major environmental legislation in the 1970s\, including the Clean Air Act\, the Clean Water Act\, and the Superfund Act. Over the course of a single decade\, Congress enacted a series of environmental laws that defined the direction and character of environmental policy in the US and globally. Learn about the process that led to these seminal laws from the writers of the legislation themselves. \nThe 1970s was a successful decade for major environmental legislation\, ending with the passing of the Superfund Act in 1980. This talk will compare Congress during the 1970s to Congress today\, including a comparison of the committees\, the legislative process\, and politics. Among others\, they will discuss the role of the media\, election processes\, and the role of campaign finance and fundraising. \nRSVP is required for this event. Please note this lecture is part of a regularly scheduled course. Guests will join registered students in the class for the lecture and discussion. SUMMARY:Retrofitting urban buildings for flood risk
DESCRIPTION:Retrofitting urban buildings for flood risk is one of New York City’s most complex planning challenges. Like other American coastal cities – but to an even greater degree given its size\, density\, and 520 miles of shoreline – NYC’s waterfront neighborhoods face significant challenges in adapting to increased coastal flood risks. There are nearly 71\,500 buildings\, 532 million square feet of interior space\, and 400\,000 residents located within the city’s 1% annual chance floodplain\, as defined in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) 2013 Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (PFIRMs). While over time\, new construction will replace some older buildings\, wholesale replacement of the existing building stock would take decades and would be prohibitively expensive and highly disruptive. In addition\, Congressional changes to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)\, enacted in 2012 and 2014\, now require owners to pay higher flood insurance premiums for buildings that predate the flood maps\, putting financial stress on many homeowners and property owners who cannot easily retrofit their buildings to meet NFIP standards. \nWith this context in mind\, the panel discussion will seek to address questions such as the following: What can building owners do to protect their buildings? What are the benefits and limitations of existing federal guidelines and regulations for urban buildings? What regulatory changes are needed to support practical and cost-effective methods of mitigation? This event panel is presented in conjunction with the related Retrofitting Buildings for Flood Risk report by NYC Department of City Planning\, released October 8th\, 2014. \nModerator:\nDavid Giambusso\, Reporter\, Capital New York \nPresenters:\nCecilia Kushner\, AICP\, Deputy Director for Climate Resilience\, Strategic Planning\, NYC Department of City Planning\nJesse Levin\, RA\, Architect and Project Manager of Retrofitting Buildings for Flood Risk\, Urban Design\, NYC Department of City Planning\nMichael Marrella\, AICP\, Director\, Waterfront and Open Space\, NYC Department of City Planning \nPanelists:\nMargaret Becker\, Director\, Disaster Recovery and Community Development\, Legal Services NYC\nKatherine Greig\, Senior Policy Advisor\, NYC Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency\nKayed Lakhia\, Deputy Director\, Mitigation and Risk Reduction\, FEMA\nCecilia Kushner\, AICP\, Deputy Director for Climate Resilience\, Strategic Planning\, NYC Department of City Planning \n  \nImage posted: Daniel Schwen\, cities-today.com

SUMMARY:Thomas Scheibitz\, "Studio Imaginaire"
DESCRIPTION:Tanya Bonakdar Gallery is pleased to announce the gallery’s eighth solo exhibition with Thomas Scheibitz. Entitled Studio Imaginaire\, the exhibition presents new painting\, relief and sculpture by the artist that invite exploration of the studio as a space between workshop and utopia. Pushing beyond the studio practices of predecessors ranging from Courbet to Mondrian and Bacon\, Scheibitz utilizes the formal elements of painting to investigate iconographic questions and the rhetoric of the signifier and the signified. \nThe title of the exhibition\, Studio Imaginaire\, references Andre Malraux and the Musée Imaginaire\, an idea that Scheibitz identifies with in his own practice of collecting and referencing an ever-expanding archive. In the Musée Imaginaire\, Malraux sought to amass two-dimensional graphic representations of art from all cultures and time periods\, which could be curated\, juxtaposed\, and reconfigured with limitless facility. Thomas Scheibitz’s new works skillfully bring together selections culled from the artist’s vast collection of found imagery\, in a continuation of the artist’s hallmark practice developed over nearly two decades. From fashion photography to Renaissance-era maps\, Scheibitz gathers visual information that interests him and then uses it as source material. Through layering\, refining and expanding upon these images taken from the common lexicon of contemporary experience\, Scheibitz synthesizes the various forms into compositions that superbly distill the amalgamation of relationships in the final tableau. In a similar sense\, Scheibitz riffs on Malraux’s Musée Imaginaire with the desire to examine the studio itself as a crucial space in which ideas\, images and styles can freely coalesce. \nThe works in the exhibition are united by both their formal characteristics and their palette of bright primary colors\, steely blue-grays\, and vibrant neons. Numerals and letters find equal footing with the simplified geometries of pyramids\, stars\, and arrows. Distilled into formal icons\, these elements are the building blocks of the artist’s precise compositions. \nThe Exhibit runs until December 20th.

SUMMARY:Structures of Coastal Resilience: Designing for Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:The devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 highlighted the vulnerability of urban coastal areas to the effects of catastrophic storms and climate change. Coastal communities must adapt planning strategies to mitigate the increasing risk posed by these natural hazards. \nSupported by the Rockefeller Foundation\, Structures of Coastal Resilience (SCR) brings together a distinguished group of engineers\, scientists\, architects\, landscape architects\, and scholars. Four landscape design teams based at City College of New York\, Harvard University\, Princeton University\, and the University of Pennsylvania have generated in-depth master planning proposals for four distinct sites on the North Atlantic—Norfolk VA\, Atlantic City NJ\, Jamaica Bay NY\, and Narragansett Bay RI.
