SUMMARY:Native Plant's Summit at the New York Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:The Northeastern U.S. hosts a rich diversity of native plants\, many of which play essential roles for humans and the environment. Alarmingly\, a number of these species are seeing a precipitous decline. Many natives are imperiled as a result (New York State considers one-quarter of its native plant species to be of conservation concern). SUMMARY:Global Citizen Festival
DESCRIPTION:Music festivals are fairly commonplace in the City\, but few combine titanic star power with social change. The annual Global Citizen Festival tackles that effort\, bringing together some of music’s biggest stars—Beyoncé\, Ed Sheeran\, Pearl Jam and many more are on this year’s bill—to raise awareness around the fight against poverty\, hunger and climate change throughout the world. Curated by Chris Martin\, whose band Coldplay will also appear\, the show is a day of free music in Central Park’s lovely Great Lawn. But getting tickets requires taking action\, from signing a petition to help empower women and girls to tweeting about clean water in underdeveloped countries. DESCRIPTION:Spend a morning on QBG Farm and learn how composted food scraps nourish the soil to grow healthy food in NYC. DESCRIPTION:The Global Challenge of Implementing the Urban Sustainable Development Goals \nICI is hosting Aromar Revi to deliver a special public talk on “The global challenge of implementing the urban SDGs.” Mr Revi will discuss how the United Nation’s SDGs engage with the public’s understanding of sustainable development challenges\, inspire public and private action\, promote integrated thinking\, and foster accountability. \nPresentation will be followed by a discussion with: \nShagun Mehrotra\nAssistant Professor\, Sustainable Development\nThe New School \nBiographies: \nAromar Revi is currently the Director of the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS)\, a national education institution committed to the equitable\, sustainable and efficient transformation of Indian settlements. Mr. Revi is an international practitioner\, consultant\, researcher and educator with over thirty years of inter-disciplinary experience in public policy and governance\, the political economy of reform\, development\, technology\, sustainability and human settlements. He is a member of the Leadership Council of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN)\, co-chair of its Urban thematic group\, where he leads a global campaign for an urban Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). As a global expert on Sustainable Urban development; has helped mobilise a successful international campaign for an urban SDG as part of the UN’s post-2015 development agenda\, which brought major global urban institutions (UN Habitat\, UCLG\, C-40\, ICLEI\, Metropolis\, WUC\, SDI and WEIGO) and over 200 cities and organisations together. Revi is an alumnus of IIT-Delhi and the Law and Management Schools of the University of Delhi. He is a past fellow of the India-China Institute. \nShagun Mehrotra is a Professor of  Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management at The \nNew School and is the founding Director of the Sustainable Development Solutions Center. Professor Mehrotra serves on UNSDSN’s Urban Thematic Group charged by the UN Secretary General as an external advisory group for the post-2015 development agenda. SUMMARY:Redefining Greenways in New York City
DESCRIPTION:As catalysts for alternative transportation\, connections between communities and parks\, and stormwater management strategies\, greenways build upon a legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted’s “parkways” that linked citizens to urban green spaces in a pre-automotive era. Now\, as bicycle commuting becomes increasingly viable\, greenways support linkages across the urban environment. Furthermore\, they often offer ecological resiliency through plantings and new habitats. Designs recall\, or even incorporate New York City’s long history of industry\, infrastructure and planning. But what makes a path a Greenway? \nThis program features three contemporary projects across four boroughs that each respond to local context and together begin to shape a 21st century greenway typology for New York City’s various urban conditions. Case studies include the New Springville Greenway (Freshkills Park\, Staten Island); the High Bridge (Bronx and Manhattan); and the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. \nEllen Macnow\, AICP\, is a city planner working for the Capital Projects Division of NYC Parks.  She served as the High Bridge Rehabilitation project coordinator for its design\, reconstruction and re-opening.  Ellen was previously the greenway program manager and the director of interagency coordination for NYC Parks\, and has been closely involved in the development of the Hudson River Greenway\, Shore Parkway Greenway and Harlem River Greenway\, among others.\n\nTricia Martin is a Partner at WE Design Landscape Architecture + Urban Design.  After graduating with a Master’s in landscape architecture from the University of Oregon\, Tricia moved to New York City to work for Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects. In 2009\, Tricia founded WE Design where she works on a variety of project types that include greenways\, parks\, urban design\, and green infrastructure projects at various scales.  She has cultivated a community-based design practice that integrates ecological frameworks into cultural contexts.  She is an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University where she teaches urban design studios. Tricia is also Past-President of the American Society of Landscape Architects NY Chapter.\n\nMariel Villeré is the Manager for Programs\, Arts and Grants for Freshkills Park\, where she develops new programs including a public art program for the site as it transitions from landfill to park. She holds a BA in Architecture from Barnard College and earned her Masters of Architecture Studies in the History\, Theory & Criticism of Architecture and Art at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in June 2013\, where she also acted as Director of Exhibitions and Publications for the Department of Architecture. Mariel has held her current position with NYC Parks since January 2014 and continues independent projects at the intersection of architecture\, art and urban studies as a researcher and designer.\n\nThe event will take place at the Seaport Culture District\, 181 Front Street. Artist Susan Mills made the paper from Freshkills Park Phragmites and for this October workshop for volunteers\, artist Tattfoo Tan will bind books with an enclosed reading list of online resources and books on urban resiliency\, as well as plenty of pages for field notes. \nNew Earth Resiliency Training Program (NERTM) is a series of tours\, workshops and sessions organized by artist Tattfoo Tan that highlight climate change\, preparedness and resiliency by training self-reliance and the ethos of living closer to the earth within an urban environment. The project explores these and related topics in the context of Freshkills Park and Staten Island communities. These programs are made possible by an Original Work Grant from Staten Island Arts\, with public funding from the New York State Council on the Arts. \nSupport for this program also provided by Partnerships for Parks. \nPresented in association with Archtober\, Architecture and Design Month New York City\, October 2015. \nAges 10+

DESCRIPTION:You are welcome to join us as we celebrate the harvest moon\, the sun\, the bountiful fruits and vegetables of the earth\, and the precious water that sustains our life during a series of events in and around the little piece of land we call The Clinton Garden. \nOn Tuesday\, October 27\, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm\, Roman Guaraguaorix (Redhawk) Perez will lead a gathering of students and community in a ceremony of thankfulness at The Clinton Garden.  Redhawk was born in the mountains of Kiskeya (Dominican Republic) and presently resides in Brooklyn\, NY. He is an accomplished indigenous Taino artist\, lecturer\, storyteller\, drummer\, singer and respected community/spiritual leader. He is the Kacike (chief) for Maisiti Yukayeke Taino; a tribe of the Taino Nation. \nOn Wednesday\, October 28\, from 10:30 am to 6:00 pm\, The Environmental Affairs Club of DeWitt Clinton High School will sponsor a greenmarket fundraiser at The Clinton Garden for our campus and neighborhood community.  Support the garden and our club’s environmental activities that include our annual overnight tree planting trip to the Catskill Mountains by purchasing local vegetables and fruit including those grown in our very own Clinton Garden.  By shopping and eating local\, we all benefit. \nOn Thursday\, October 29\, DeWitt Clinton Sustainability students will be heading to Van Cortlandt Park for a tour of the park’s water resources.  Meet up with us at the Van Cortlandt Ecology Center at 10:30 am or speak to me if you’re interested in chaperoning for this wonderful experience in our own local wilds. \nAnd in case you’re wondering about our recent news\, read about Future Abundance events from this past spring and summer at wittseminar.blogspot.com  \nEvents are free\, please register here. \nPhoto credit: ioby.

SUMMARY:Brooklyn Eco Bike Tour
DESCRIPTION:Learn about Brooklyn’s environmental challenges and successes on NYC H20’s leisurely and informative bike ride along Jamaica Bay. \nClimate change\, rising sea levels and intense storms like Hurricane Sandy have persuaded city planners of the value of marshland in storm water management.  A century ago the neighborhoods Sandy flooded were wetlands. \nAll 14 of NYC’s sewage plants are built in this vulnerable floodplain along the water’s edge. Their effluent flows into our bay’s and rivers\, so maintaining high quality treatment is vital to protect beach goers as well as wildlife. \nGovernment agencies like DEP and the Army Corps of Engineers have partnered with local NGO’s like Jamaica Bay Eco Watchers and NRDC to design a plan to restore Jamaica Bay’s ecosystem. Initiatives include restoring wetlands\, mitigating combined sewer overflows (CSO) with green and grey infrastructure and upgrading sewage plants. \nOn this ride we will; \n\nBike along the Jamaica Bay Greenway\, visit restored wetlands and demonstrate how the multifaceted Jamaica Bay Watershed Protection Plan is being put into action\nVisit a sewage plant and a storm water retention facility learning about CSO’s and the ad hoc way in which the sewage system initially developed as well as the urban planning history of this area\nExplore one of NYC’s Forever Wild areas\nSee lesser known neighborhoods of Brooklyn\, including Spring Creek\, Bergen Basin\, Sheepshead Bay\, Brighton Beach and Coney Island\, all fronting Jamaica Bay\n\nThe tour will be led by BK ecology enthusiasts Adam Schwartz and Matt Malina. \n\n\nTickets and more information can be found by clicking here.\n\n\nEmail mm1566@nyu.edu if you are a student or educator to receive the discount code.

DESCRIPTION:WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CLIMATE CHANGE?\nImplications for UN talks\, shareholders\, and liability \nThe question of responsibility for climate change lies at the heart of societal debate over actions to address it. In 1992 the United Nations climate framework divided the world into two parts — developed countries\, which had produced the greatest share of historic emissions and were given the task of preventing dangerous greenhouse gas levels\, and developing countries\, which were given few duties. The world’s economy looks much different today than it did in 1992\, and the notion of “common but differentiated responsibilities” among states is being transformed. \nBut society can assign climate responsibilities in ways other than among nations.  This symposium explores the conceptual territory of climate responsibility\, and scientific\, legal\, ethical and policy bases for assigning responsibility to countries and to other entities – from individuals to emitting industries to the fossil fuel companies at the base of the carbon supply chain whose responsibilities are now being actively debated in shareholder resolutions and calls for institutional divestment. \nSPEAKERS \nPeter C. He shows how realizing small scale design\, buildings\, start-ups\, collaborative networks\, urban plans\, and digital tools contribute to the development of a new resource-based design practice. \nThis SCE event is part of the Waste Not series\, which highlights how some of the most innovative designers today are engaged in formulating new approaches to the question of “waste”.
