DESCRIPTION:Dandelions\, Knotweed\, and Mugwort are invading Schmul Park! Become a “Weed Warrior” and help Freshkills Park remove these plants from among our new native plantings. Learn how to identify the native and invasive plants in Schmul Park while helping to beautify the landscape!  \nVolunteers will each receive their own special edition field notebook as part of the ongoing series of UnCommon Pages workshops and NERTM. Artist Susan Mills made the paper from Freshkills Park Phragmites and for this October workshop for volunteers\, artist Tattfoo Tan will bind books with an enclosed reading list of online resources and books on urban resiliency\, as well as plenty of pages for field notes. \nNew Earth Resiliency Training Program (NERTM) is a series of tours\, workshops and sessions organized by artist Tattfoo Tan that highlight climate change\, preparedness and resiliency by training self-reliance and the ethos of living closer to the earth within an urban environment. The project explores these and related topics in the context of Freshkills Park and Staten Island communities. These programs are made possible by an Original Work Grant from Staten Island Arts\, with public funding from the New York State Council on the Arts. \nSupport for this program also provided by Partnerships for Parks. \nPresented in association with Archtober\, Architecture and Design Month New York City\, October 2015. \nAges 10+

DESCRIPTION:The organizers of the People’s Climate March (now the People’s Climate Movement) are calling for a National Day of Action this October 14 to demand bold action on climate change. \nOur People’s Climate Movement Pop-Up at the Flatiron Plaza will be a central location where people can show their support for climate action in 60 seconds or less. \nThe pop-up will include: \n\nInformation booths you can sign petitions of support\, access social media tools\, and find resources on getting more involved.\nPhoto booths where you can take photos with People’s Climate Movement-themed displays and then share on social media.\nOpportunities to volunteer on site.\nOpportunities for the media to get more information on the message behind the People’s Climate Movement and the upcoming climate talks in Paris.\n\nBACKGROUND: This December in Paris\, nations will meet again to negotiate a United Nation’s climate agreement that commits all countries to address climate change. Therefore\, this fall we will continue to build a powerful movement for change and bring the demand for bold action to our leaders in anticipation of the Paris climate talks. DESCRIPTION:Learn about Brooklyn’s environmental challenges and successes on NYC H20’s leisurely and informative bike ride along Jamaica Bay. \nClimate change\, rising sea levels and intense storms like Hurricane Sandy have persuaded city planners of the value of marshland in storm water management.  A century ago the neighborhoods Sandy flooded were wetlands. \nAll 14 of NYC’s sewage plants are built in this vulnerable floodplain along the water’s edge. Their effluent flows into our bay’s and rivers\, so maintaining high quality treatment is vital to protect beach goers as well as wildlife. \nGovernment agencies like DEP and the Army Corps of Engineers have partnered with local NGO’s like Jamaica Bay Eco Watchers and NRDC to design a plan to restore Jamaica Bay’s ecosystem. DESCRIPTION:This community forum and discussion about “greening” Bronx residential buildings while creating a green local workforce and fighting for global climate justice is co-hosted by Bronx Climate Justice North and Manhattan College Center for Urban Resilience and Environmental Sustainability (CURES). \nClimate change – caused largely by heat-trapping greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from fossil fuels (coal\, oil\, natural gas) – threatens our economy\, infrastructure\, public health\, food & water\, and NYC’s future. The year 2015 is on track to be the warmest on record. \nBuildings account for close to 72% of U.S. electricity use\, a significant percentage of GHGs\, and contribute to high asthma rates in the Bronx. We need a rapid and just shift OFF fossil fuels and ON to a 100% renewable energy economy by 2030. Join us to learn how we can “green” our residential buildings. DESCRIPTION:Our window to engage the public in shaping global climate change policy is closing. In December of this year global leaders will gather in Paris for COP21 to decide what our future is going to look like – but most citizens don’t even know this is happening. We must bridge the gap between the “policy makers” and the public. \nClimate Countdown is a media project that equips its viewer with the knowledge\, vocabulary\, and tools to have a voice in building political will to avoid a global climate crisis. This web-series makes the acronym-laden process of climate change negotiations digestible and shareable. By mapping out climate solutions\, each episode cultivates awareness\, encourages hope\, and empowers the audience to act. \nJoin us for the first screening event of the Climate Countdown webseries at Columbia University. The event will showcase episodes from the series\, as well as two seperate expert panel discussions on the webseries and climate media at large.

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we examine the role of urban young people in promoting policy action on climate change. During this interactive event we will discuss how children and youth can and are providing solutions for greater resilience in the urban environment as well as fostering social inclusion. \nIn preparation for the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP) 21 in November/December 2015 in Paris\, this event will include a presentation of original child and youth-led mitigation and adaptation initiatives where young people are making a catalytic contribution to sustainable urban environments. A moderated panel discussion between New School students\, New School faculty\, activists and practitioners will follow. \nToday’s generation of young people will be disproportionately affected by climate change. In cities\, young people experience some of the worst impacts of climate change and environmental degradation\, and as the world’s urban population grows\, the magnitude of this problem will only increase. \nDespite these concerns\, only a minority of climate policies and plans specifically address children’s and young people’s needs.  Few organizations engage children and adolescents in these issues\, despite their own mobilization and action around the world. DESCRIPTION:The New School for Social Research is proud to present Robert Pollin’s new book Greening the Global Economy. \nRobert Pollin will give a lecture about his book\, which will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Katrina vanden Heuvel (editor\, and publisher of The Nation). The event will be followed by a reception. Copies of Greening the Global Economy will also be on sale at the event. \nRSVPs are welcome but not required for attendance. \nIn Greening the Global Economy\, Pollin offers a concrete solution to our global crisis. He takes on the widely-held belief that protecting the environment and expanding job opportunities are conflicting goals\, and offers hard numbers and original research as well as studies from all points along the political spectrum (including the U.S. National Academy of Sciences\, the World Bank and McKinsey & Co.) to prove it wrong and counter with a bold solution: Pollin determines that “the global economy can achieve the emissions reduction target if most countries devote between 1.5 and 2% per year of GDP to energy efficiency and clean\, low-emissions renewable energy sources.” What’s more\, Pollin shows how working people in all regions of the globe will benefit – in many cases substantially – from the overall growth in job opportunities generated by clean energy investments.
