SUMMARY:The Washington Bicentennial and the Brooklyn World's Fair with Thomas J. Campanella
DESCRIPTION: Photo Credit: http://www.nycgovparks.org \nHistorian Thomas Campanella will explore the forgotten “back story” to the 1939 New York World’s Fair\, which began with US Congressman Sol Bloom’s effort to create a great permanent exposition in Brooklyn’s Marine Park to celebrate the bicentennial of George Washington. \nBloom’s proposal for a 1932 Washington Bicentennial Exposition would be the grandest fair ever staged\, with pavilions for 46 nations\, a football stadium for 200\,000 spectators and a centerpiece “taller and greater than either the Woolworth Building or the Eiffel Tower.” \nDespite the backing of the city and Brooklyn civic organizations\, Chicago stripped ahead of New York to stage a fair of its own in 1933. Several years later Robert Moses saw a World’s Fair as a means of funding his dream of turning the Flushing ash dumps into a great park. But Sol Bloom had influence yet\, making sure his beloved General was a major presence at the 1939 New York World’s Fair—towering over the Central Mall in a 65-foot statue by James E. Fraser.

SUMMARY:Holdouts! A Manhattan Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Image:  Esther Crain/Ephemeral New York \nJoin the Atlas Obscura for a historic walking tour of Midtown Manhattan’s great real estate holdouts and the stories behind the various tenants who stood their ground\, refusing to budge. \nHidden within plain sight\, the odd anomaly in a sea of skyscrapers: holdouts have had a real and lasting impact on the structure of our city’s streets\, and the architecture of each has its own unique story to tell. From the little old lady unwilling to leave her home at any price to the gambling man who stayed too long in hopes of financial gain and overplayed his hand\, the history of New York City’s holdouts ranges from the outrageous to the touching and is often rife with reversals of fortune. \nIn this in-depth walking tour Robert Amell will be sharing 16+ examples of historic holdouts found in the landscape of East Midtown Manhattan. Manifested within an unusual building shape\, odd skyscraper entrance\, or the inexplicable look to a facade\, each of these architectural artifacts have had a significant impact on the development of the surrounding area. Join the Atlas Obscura for an afternoon of discovery within the very heart of Manhattan. \nMany of the accounts on this tour are based on the book Holdouts! by Andrew Alpern and Seymour Durst. \nADVANCE TICKETS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED \nMeetup will be inside the lower atrium of 875 Third Avenue\, located at the SE corner of 53rd and 3rd. Once inside\, take the escalator down to the basement level. \nPlease be on time; we will be beginning promptly at 11 am.
