SUMMARY:2014 Rising Seas Summit
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural Rising Seas Summit brought together more than 170 professionals from national and local government\, industry\, academic institutions and environmental NGOs together to highlight the interrelationships between sea level rise\, climate change and extreme events. Understanding\, anticipating and adapting to water related threats is critical to national security and a stable economy. Sea level rise will continue to damage coastal ecosystems and inland water systems\, and the recent catastrophic impacts of Hurricane Sandy have demonstrated the risks faced by all coastal communities on the U.S. eastern seaboard. SUMMARY:Drain: Planning for Climate Change (Naomi Klein and Kate Orff)
DESCRIPTION:We are living in Decade Zero\, the tipping point after which irreparable changes delivered “in the language of fires\, floods\, storms\, and droughts” will wreck havoc on the earth\, according to acclaimed journalist Naomi Klein\, whose new book This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate calls for regulation of the corporate powers that pollute and critiques the shortcomings of market-based solutions. These global issues find focus in Richard Misrach’s and Kate Orff’s collaborative publicationPetrochemical America\, a photographic and graphic investigation of the cultural\, physical\, and economic ecologies of a contaminated\, 150-mile stretch of the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge to New Orleans known as “Cancer Alley.”What can designers do? Klein and Orff are joined by Laura Kurgan for a conversation on the practical and political challenges of planning for climate change\, and how to build a more equitable world in the process.Seating is limited. Due to the popularity of this event\, priority seating will be given to current students and faculty with Columbia University IDs. The event will be livestreamed at livestream.com/gsapp

SUMMARY:The Five Thousand Pound Life: Land
DESCRIPTION:As shown in the event description: \nThe Five Thousand Pound Life: Land addresses the need to consider settlement patterns and competing land uses in new ways given the reality of climate change.  The value assigned to various forms of land use\, and various attitudes towards land as a resource\, must be understood in terms of ecological services and impacts\, rather than narrowly-defined economic imperatives. In sessions on “Nature and the City\,” “Spatial Logistics\,” and “Density\,” speakers will consider American approaches to development\, attitudes toward nature\, and whether the current dominant narrative of the environmental superiority of concentrated high density development might be challenged by a counter-narrative of lower density land-use that takes advantage of distributed energy production and localized treatment of waste. Ultimately\, The Five Thousand Pound Life: Land will ask what the desirable and politically achievable mix of these narratives could be. \nThe Architectural League launched The Five Thousand Pound Life—an initiative of public events\, digital releases\, and a major design study—in September 2013 to address the intertwined challenges of reimagining the American way of life to address climate change and to rebuild a robust economic structure that offers viable livelihoods across the income spectrum. The League brings the perspective of the design professions to these issues\, as its contribution to what must be a broad collective effort spanning geographies\, generations\, occupations\, disciplines\, and ideologies. \nOpening Remarks\nKevin Bone\, Director\, The Cooper Union Institute for Sustainable Design\nRosalie Genevro\, Executive Director\, The Architectural League of New York \nA Conversation on Nature and the City\nEric Sanderson & Ted Steinberg\nModerated by Rosalie Genevro \nEric Sanderson is an expert in the ecology of New York City\, a Senior Conservation Ecologist at the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS)\, and the best-selling author ofMannahatta: A Natural History of New York City (2009) and Terra Nova:  The New World After Oil\, Cars\, and Suburbs (2013). \nTed Steinberg is Professor of History and Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University. His new book Gotham Unbound: The Ecological History of Greater New York(2014) examines the ecological changes that have resulted in the reality of present-day New York City. \nSpatial Logistics\nAlex Klatskin\nRob Holmes\nJesse LeCavalier\nModerated by Coral Davenport \nAlex Klatskin is a General Partner of Forsgate Industrial Partners\, a private industrial real estate development and investment firm based in Teterboro\, New Jersey. \nRob Holmes is an assistant professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Florida and co-founder of Mammoth\, a blog about infrastructures\, logistics\, landscapes\, and architecture. \nJesse LeCavalier is working on a book about the architecture and logistics of Walmart\, forthcoming from the University of Minnesota Press. SUMMARY:Land use summit: Solving urban land use problems in the 21st century
DESCRIPTION:As mentioned on the event page: \nCity Planning has evolved from the exclusive domain of government agencies\, to a more complex\, inter-agent process in the development of space. Organizations from across the country are leveraging open source data and new technologies in visualization\, crowd sourcing\, and data analysis to solve the most intractable problems facing our cities in the 21st Century. \nIn three parts\, this summit brings some of the leading minds behind the most dedicated and creative organizations\, who will share their thoughts on new tools and ideas that are leading the charge towards a more inclusive and dynamic urban environment. \nThe final part brings together\, in a moderated discussion\, a panel of urban land use leaders working to preserve manufacturing and affordable housing in our cities. In New York City\, where land is acutely finite\, how do we ensure land uses throughout the city are diverse enough to meet the needs of existing and future residents\, provide living-wage jobs at various levels of experience\, and ensure our economy has a wide range of industries? \nSchedule: \n+[Welcome and Keynote Speaker Susan Fainstein] \nSenior Research Fellow at Harvard Graduate School for Planning; Author of “The Just City \n+[Presentations of Innovative Projects Around Land Use] \nPresentations from leading innovative community-based organizations will present various projects addressing land use in New York City that cultivate a more inclusive and dynamic urban environment. \nFeaturing:  \n\nPaula Segal – 596 Acres\nJoan Byron – BRT Pratt Center\nSaleen Shah – Citizens Committee for NYC\nAnusha Venkataraman – El Puente Green Light District\n\n+[Intermission: Refreshments and Mingling] \n+[Panel – Affordability: The Future of Manufacturing and Housing in NYC] \nLeaders working on-the-ground\, advocating for manufacturing\, affordable housing\, and development in New York City will explore the debate on contending land use issues such as zoning and density in the city. SUMMARY:Green building tour at Sunset Park recycling facility
DESCRIPTION:Green building tour at Sunset Park Material Recovery Facility \nJoin GreenHomeNYC on September 30th as we explore Sims Municipal Recycling’s new Sunset Park Material Recovery Facility.\n \nSims Municipal Recycling’s (SMR) processes all of NYC’s residential and institutional metal\, glass and plastic recyclables\, as well as half of the City’s paper.  The new facility has a Recycling Education Center\, where New Yorkers are encouraged to come see how recycling happens in NYC. \nThe visit will start with introductory presentation and videos that will illustrate what happens after recyclables are put into the recycling bin.  Visitors will then have some time to explore the interactive exhibits that detail the sorting operations. The tour continues onto the catwalk that oversees huge piles of recyclables and the operating equipment. \nAs a member of the green economy\, the Sims site also features a large solar panel installation\, habitat mitigation through artificial reefs\, native plantings\, and fuzzy rope nets to encourage growth of filter feeders along the pier. Sims hopes that a visit to the recycling facility will forever change visitors’ perception of what it means to throw something “away.” \n\n \n \n \n \n\n Photo: Jim Merithew\, Wired

SUMMARY:Gotham Unbound book launch and discussion on NYC's urban ecology
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday Oct 8\, 2014\n6:00 pm – 8:00 pm\n20 Cooper Square\, 5th Floor\nNew York\, NY 10003\nRSVP required. \nThe Institute for Public Knowledge invites you to a discussion with Ted Steinberg and Andrew Needham on Steinberg’s new book Gotham Unbound: The Ecological History of Greater New York. Steinberg will use the book and his historical understanding to address a question of some urgency: Can New York City survive the sea? He will look at what the city has done in the past to deal with coastal flooding\, as well as current plans in the wake of Sandy. \nGotham Unbound is the story of the monumental struggle between New York and the natural world. From Henry Hudson’s discovery of Mannahatta to Hurricane Sandy\, this is Ted Steinberg’s sweeping ecological history of one of the most man-made spots on earth. Here is a tale of “the world with us”—lots of us—a groundbreaking book that recounts the four-century history of how hundreds of square miles of open marshlands became home to six percent of the nation’s population. \nSteinberg brings a vanished New York back to life. You will see the metropolitan area anew\, not just as a dense urban goliath but as an estuary once home to miles of oyster reefs\, wolves\, whales\, and blueberry bog thickets. That world gave way to an onslaught managed by thousands\, from Governor John Montgomerie\, who turned water into land\, and John Randel\, who imposed a grid on Manhattan\, to Robert Moses\, Charles Urstadt\, Donald Trump\, and Michael Bloomberg. \nTed Steinberg is the Adeline Barry Davee Distinguished Professor of History and Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University. His publications have focused on the intersection of environmental\, social\, and legal history. His books include American Green: The Obsessive Quest for the Perfect Lawn; Down to Earth: Nature’s Role in American History\, a National Outdoor Book Award winner and Pulitzer Prize Nominee in History; Acts of God: The Unnatural History of Natural Disaster in America\, a Pulitzer Prize Nominee in General Non-Fiction; and Nature Incorporated: Industrialization and the Waters of New England which won the Willard Hurst Prize in American Legal History and the Old Sturbridge Village E. Harold Hugo Memorial Book Prize.  \nAndrew Needham is an Associate Professor of History at New York University. He specializes in recent United States history\, with teaching and research emphases in environmental\, American Indian\, and urban and suburban history as well as the history of the American West. His forthcoming book\, Power Lines: Phoenix and the Making of the Modern Southwest explores the interconnected transformation of Phoenix and the Navajo Nation in the years after World War II.\n \n

SUMMARY:Obama's Climate Plan: State Action\, Grassroots Opportunities Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:An event held at Bard College\, Center for Environmental Policy in NYC on October 8th: 1150 6th Avenue\, 5th Floor\, New York\, NY 10036. \nPlease  RSVP:  events@sustainabilitypractice.net  Date: October 8\, 2014 Time: 6:30pm – 8:30pm \nPanelists: Monique Segarra\, Policy Faculty\, Bard Center for Environmental Policy; Judith Enk\, Administrator for EPA’s Region 2 Office in New York; David Goldston\, Director\, Government Affairs\, Natural Resources Defense Council; Bill Holland\, State Policy Director\, New York League of Conservation Voters. \nModerator: Eban Goodstein – Director\, Bard Center for Environmental Policy \nTopic: ‘Obama’s Climate Plan: State Action\, Grassroots Opportunities’\n\n\nPresident Obama’s Climate Action Plan\, released in June 2013\,  detailed three areas of focus: Cut Carbon Pollution in America; Prepare the US for Impacts of Climate Change; and Lead International Efforts to Combat Global Climate Change. However\, increasingly ominous scientific reports from the United Nations (UNEP l IPCC) and the dysfunction in the United States legislature seem to have morphed the President’s plan into more of a scramble toward sustainability.\n\n\n\nUsing the authority of the Clean Air Act\, Obama’s EPA is moving forward with proposed regulations on global warming pollution from existing power plants. The EPA’s target is 17% reductions below 2006 levels by 2020\, but the final outcome will be determined as the states actually move to implement the regulations. Today\, citizen groups have an unprecedented opportunity to drive the state level dialog\, and advocate for deeper emission cuts. This panel will examine the background for the latest EPA action\, and the possible impacts regionally\, nationally\, and globally over the next few years.\n\n\nFor more information\, please visit: http://www.bard.edu/cep/news/event.php?eid=127822\n\n\n\n\n \nPhoto Credit: International Business Times.

SUMMARY:Gowanus Wild by Miska Draskoczy
DESCRIPTION:Photograph by Miska Draskoczy.\n \nA new photography exhibit called “Gowanus Wild” is on display from October 10-November 16\, 2014 at the Ground Floor Gallery in Brooklyn. \nIn the words of artist Miska Draskoczy\, \n\nSilence. A lack of humans. Light on textured abstraction. Chaotic forms unfolding all around you\, creating a hypnosis of spirit that just might convince you there is a Creator after all. These are the qualities I think of when experiencing ‘wilderness’. And yet the same tingle runs down my spine while wandering the industrial streets of Gowanus\, Brooklyn\, at night. \nI aim to turn concepts of nature photography on their head by finding the beautiful in what most consider to be a man-made environmental catastrophe. The Gowanus Canal is one of the most polluted waterways in the country and the neighborhood has seen continuous industrial use since the 19th century. My vision is to capture a marriage of opposites; the organic in the industrial\, green within blacks and grays\, stillness and peace in urban chaos. \nAs our urban communities grapple with how to connect with the primeval in a world that offers sterile potted plants as an outlet to nature\, I see Gowanus Wild as an urban hiking manual\, a continuation of generations of landscape photography\, updated for our technological age. If only we adjust our perception of what is ‘nature’ and ‘wild’ around us\, a fascinating wilderness can be found in the fringes of our decaying city where nature and chaos conspire to produce a new type of wild beauty. \n\nOn view: October 10-November 9\, 2014. \nREGULAR HOURS: Thursday: 12pm – 6pm\, Friday: 12pm – 6pm\, Saturday: 12pm – 6pm\, Sunday: 11am – 5pm. And by appointment. \nArtist-led Gowanus walking tour: Sunday\, November 9\, 5:00-7:00p.m.  \nGround Floor Gallery\, 343 5th St. Park Slope\, Brooklyn\, www.groundfloorbk.com

SUMMARY:Family Workshops at Dulce De Harlem Community Garden
DESCRIPTION:Citizens Committee for New York City & Envi Harlem \nwelcome you to take part in \nFREE FAMILY WORKSHOPS at the Dulce de Harlem Community Garden! \nWhere: Dulce de Harlem Saturday Workshops\, 620 West 148th Street (between Broadway and Riverside Drive) \nWhen: 1PM on October 11\, 18\, 25\, and November 1 (Rain or Shine) \nRefreshments will be served. Please confirm attendance at enviharlem@gmail.com \nIndoor Container Gardening \nSaturday\, October 11 \nWe invite families\, groups\, or individuals to join us this Saturday to kick off our Fall Workshop Series at Dulce de Harlem\, where we’ll be transplanting plants from the garden to containers\, and taking them indoors for the fall and winter seasons. We invite you to take a plant home with you\, and brighten up your apartment this cold season. We will have plants for you to select from\, herbs or flowers (mint\, mums\, and more!) There will be supplies for you to decorate pots and planters with to add that extra personal touch. \nMake Your Own Pickles (and pickle your veggies!) \nSaturday\, October 18 \nCome join us for our second workshop this fall\, where we will learn about the ancient craft of pickling. Bring your friends\, your favorite veggies\, and a jar if you have one\, and join us in a celebration of fermentation. In this lesson\, we will learn about food preservation and spoilage\, as well as the friendly (and not-so-friendly) bacteria involved in it. We will taste a number of different pickles\, discuss the various ingredients in pickle recipes\, learn about the process of fermentation\, and make some pickles of our own. If you have a vegetable that you’d like to experience pickled\, bring it with you! All necessary supplies will be provided\, although supplemental supplies are appreciated (jars\, vegetables\, utensils\, spices). \nSeed Saving & Pumpkin Carving \nSaturday\, October 25 \nPartake in the annual gardening tradition of Seed Saving with us this this season\, as the garden begins to wind down for the fall and winter. In this workshop\, we will learn all about seeds through various hands-on activities. We will collect seeds from our plants to use next spring\, and make wildflower seed-balls (to be tossed by guerilla gardeners of all ages). We’ll also be carving jack-o-lanterns for this upcoming Halloween. We might even roast some pumpkin seeds as a mid-autumn snack! (Bring your carving tools\, pumpkins will be provided.) \nCompost: A New Beginning \nSaturday\, November 1 \nOur final workshop this season will be all about composting! Save your food scraps and other organic waste\, join us on a compost project at Dulce. We will be building a lasagna garden bed (a garden built out of food scraps)\, in which we will plant some late-season grains and garlic. Next season\, our lasagna bed will be a verdant veggie patch! This session\, we will also explore Dulce de Harlem’s other composting facilities; this is an excellent opportunity to get involved with composting at Dulce\, or learn more about the process. \nFor more info\, visit: www.enviharlem.com \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Hurricane Sandy anniversary planting in the Rockaways
DESCRIPTION:For the two year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy\, Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) is bringing people of all ages together to create a nature protective buffer for the Rockaway community. \nAs we learned from the storm\, the natural vegetation and dunes that exist off our shores served as a protective buffer to the homes and businesses that exist in these areas. Students can receive community service hours. No registration is required. This event is rain or shine\, so please dress accordingly. \nSpecial thanks to NY State Department of Environmental Conservation and National Fish & Wildlife Foundation for their support. \nFor more Rockaway Waterfront Alliance events\, visit the organization’s website. \nSource: New York City Parks Department
