SUMMARY:Fracking and China's Energy Revolution Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:China is the world’s fastest growing economy. But much of that famed miracle growth has been driven by dirty coal. China’s cities are the most polluted in the world and over-exploitation of underground water reserves\, mostly by the country’s thirsty energy sector\, has wiped 28\,000 of its rivers from the map. And China’s energy crisis is global. China’s greenhouse gas emissions are the biggest in the world and growing at up to 10 percent per year. Enter fracking. China wants to frack the world’s biggest gas reserves at a head-spinning pace: three times as fast as the U.S. has. Will the onset of fracking in China drive down its coal addiction? At what costs? \nJoin The Asia Society for an exclusive preview of a yearlong investigation by Mother Jones and Climate Desk into China’s nascent fracking boom\, followed by discussion of China’s energy future moderated by Climate Desk producer James West\, in conversation with Mother Jones reporter Jaeah Lee\, Asia Society’s Orville Schell\, energy adviser Ella Chou\, and Gasland director Josh Fox. \nCan’t make it to this program? Tune in to AsiaSociety.org/Live at 7:30pm E.T. for a free live video webcast. Viewers are encouraged to submit questions to moderator@asiasociety.org or to tweet their questions to #AskAsia. \nTo learn more about this event click here.

SUMMARY:Reading the Streetscape: Battery Park City
DESCRIPTION:From http://cfafoundation.org/files/DI%20-%20Streetscape%20program%20promo%20image.jpg\nDiscover how to “read” buildings for information about the City’s growth and development and look at the city’s architecture from a design perspective in this 2-hour walking tour. You’ll never walk down the street the same way again! \nNew York’ City’s effort to create a new neighborhood to serve the revived Financial District in the late 20th century borrowed heavily from New York City’s past. Experience the streets\, public places and promenade that stitch together a collection of ‘modern’ buildings that were inspired by the architecture and urban spaces of New York City’s greatest neighborhoods. Think Jane Jacobs’ West Village\, Greenwich Village\, Gramercy\, Sutton Place and see how architects employed the patterns\, details\, materials and fragments of the past to create a sense of place. This tour will bring the Manhattan trilogy full circle and can also be enjoyed and understood as a stand-alone tour. \nClick here to register. Meeting location will be listed on registration receipt.

SUMMARY:FIGMENT NYC Weekend on Governor's Island
DESCRIPTION:You can play a round of mini-golf on a very unique course from June 7 through Sep 21. Courtesy: newyork.figmentproject.org\nFIGMENT is a free art event that is 100% volunteer-powered. On June 7th and 8th\, FIGMENT New York will be kicking off another amazing summer with participatory art projects in every imaginable medium on Governors Island in New York Harbor. Take the ferry from Manhattan or Brooklyn and enjoy one of New York’s best kept secrets\, a 30 acre newly-renovated park with panoramic views of the city and the Statue of Liberty. Visitors to FIGMENT are invited to play minigolf\, relax in the City of Dreams Pavilion\, explore interactive sculptures\, and play in the TreeHouse all season long. \nWe’re especially excited for the Governor’s Cup in the City of Dreams Pavilion. In this sculpture\, inspired by tape-lace crochet\, used plastic cups\, saved from discard from throughout the city\, are bound by zip-ties into a densely-knit serpentine structure. The configuration forms an outdoor room\, shimmering in the sun and echoing with breeze-driven sound. It also calls attention to our disposable cup crisis. The recycling rate for plastic cups is negligible. After any given event in New York City\, hundreds of disposable cups get left behind to sit in landfills. This year\, the Governor’s Cup Assembly Team committed to saving 30\,000 cups from the landfill and finding new ways to save other plastic cups from being tossed aside as trash.   \nFerry schedule and directions here.
